Thank you so much for following our journey, love from Elaine and Darren.
A hat with corks is the answer for the flies!
In Canada we often screen in our decks/porches. Sometimes floor to ceiling, sometimes top 2/3 or 1/2 with sturdier wall at bottom. The area becomes an extension of the building, in a way. So much easier to enjoy the outdoors.
Not difficult to DIY, make the framing according to screen width. Secure screen (fine enough to keep midges put) with slats. Downside is you do have to clean the screens every now and then. Also all our windows are screened unlike many parts of Europe. Cheers! 🇨🇦
In Australia, I don’t think anyone would consider moving into a house without fly/mosquito screens! When I am in the garden I usually wear a hat with a fly net over the top!
I'm looking for one to go over my straw hat!! 👍🤗
Darren and Elaine thanks for sharing your lovely interaction . A pleasure to listen to your next plans of which
You talk with the usual enthusiasm and condivision❤
Glad you enjoyed it
I love Jean she’s a breath of fresh air….
I agree Trudy, when I listen to the lyrics, I can see clear images of a wonderful childhood and it reminds me of mine 🥰

JEAN MANÑ gave us a nice little concert ,and it was really nice thought of your friends to help the bombeiros ,they really risk their lives to protect people and forests ,,etc ....Bravo!!!...
I agree with you 👍
Got it signed up yay…
Every time you wave the flys, mozzies, midges away from your face we call that the Aussie salute lol. We suffer the same.
😆😆😆
Ya know, raising money for the firemen, sorry, was really wonderful! I know when their on duty here, the have to pay for their own food and drinks at the firehouse. Can you imagine that grocery bill!! The concert was nice. But give the CDs to someone who would listen. I still buy LPs and play them on a record player. I do have cds, but don't play them as much. Have a great weekend! 🙏❤️🇺🇸🇬🇧🇵🇹⛵️👣🤙🫠
When you make the mold put enough rocks on the top of mold to render it in place inside first then cut wood to prop it up until it hardens! Happy New Year and good luck
Is it too hot to wear a bee keeper's hat?
I'm allergic to skeeto bites, so I'd wear one! 👩🏻🚀
How lovely to have raised those funds for bombaras. Jean Mann was amazing to give her time and put on a concert . I loved her music, such a talented lady. Could picture me singing along whilst driving.
Elaine call me crazy but what about those fine mesh draw string bags, from Aldi, one puts veggies in, well pop one over your head, pop a wide brim hat on top, then garden away avoiding annoying flies. 💚
Great idea, if can find one big enough 👍💕
Or Tea Tree Oil, mix in coconut oil and dab on neck. Or, mix with water and spray / spritz on. I never had a bite this summer. Put a dab on top Maxs head. ( where he cant lick)
I've heard that hanging clear sandwich bags of water from your doorways can help deter flies, it might be an old wives tale but it's free/cheap to try!
When I lie in bed in the morning I make a mental list of all the day’s chores. Then by the time I get dressed, that list has dropped to half! By the end of the day I’ve succeeded doing less than one quarter LOL. It definitely is an aging thing 🥴
What a brilliant plan!!! 💕👍
I love the pips cast chats. You two have such a great relationship. You compliment one another so much.. the cd giveway is very kind. Unfortunately I no longer have a cd player. I have a small home too and seperate land for my veg and dogs to play in so I love watching how you have transformed it all. ❤
Sounds lovely 🐶😊
We call them no-see-um’s here in the states. An old remedy is to use bear grease, but then you would have Max licking you all day which might be worse 😂. You will be glad you are getting all your hard work done now before winter sets in! Thanks for sharing.
😆😆😆😆🐶
Thanks for your vid 😇💟💟💟 Love and bless you guys, maybe you should find out what smell fly's don't like and put it near you or on you and there are electric muskito gatchers but that's more for inside and there's this bags to trap them.
Thanks for the tip
You sound like you are recovering from being sick, the summer lingers (it was a hot one all over the world ) and are going through a bit of cabin - fever. Life gets like that sometimes everywhere. Just reflect on all the work that you have done, and the challenges that you have endured. In the goals that you have achieved. Bravo to both of you.
And I understand the customs issues, as I have the same problem with when I sent items to my son & his wife, from the US who live in London
I enjoyed Jean Mann’s concert last Sunday, and I already have a couple of her albums that I bought from her website!
Wow! That's brilliant, 👍🤗🎶
Hi Elaine and Darren its funny about the flies, i think here in Uk we have had more than ever before, loads of fruit flies in the house, i've had to cover the fruit bowl because even fresh fruit has been full of them, and the dog keeps snapping at them all the time, but we have'nt had the heat you have had, anyway love to you Darren and Max xxx
We always used to have 2 weeks, in the summer, when these shiney hard black bugs would be everywhere!!! Possibly to do with farmers cutting harvest. It used to freak my kids out when young!!
There is a fly repellent for animals. Perhaps your vet can tell you where you can get some. They use it on donkeys faces to keep them off their eyes.
Your insect dilemma reminded me of my Dad. We were sitting outside and I was swarmed by mosquitos! Curiously, they left him alone. I asked him why? He said they just don't like how he tastes! 😆Later we pondered if it was the fact he ate a lot of garlic (I mean, a LOT! He ate cloves raw when he felt sick...🤢😁)
Blood group O. They used to eat me alive. Climbed over my AB negative ex to get to me. Never touched him. Since I gave up all sugar they don't touch me.
My dad would have a cigar on an evening and the smoke kept them away!!! But if went fishing, he would be biten everywhere !!💕👍

Yes, smoke does keep 🦟 away.
I have heard several
UA-camrs say they use Avon’s “Skin so Soft” lotion very successfully against the flies in Portugal. I read that Avon has recently developed a couple of products especially as a bug repellent, “Skin So Soft Bug Guard Plus Picaridin Towelettes” and “Skin So Soft Bug Guard Plus IR3535 Gentle Breeze SPF 30 Lotion”.
Thanks for the tip! I'll check it out 👍
Works like a charm 👍🏼.
Elaine Darren (Max) Stop pushing yourselves, you accomplish a lot when you do less too ❤️
Have just popped a link via Instagram message for an insect veil. My thoughts re renovations was can you occasionally stay at Garden House to get a break from dust?
I also agree with some other comments about taking care after being unwell, it sometimes takes longer to bounce back. ❤
Thank you 🤗
Good job guys
Elaine you had been ill a while ago and we don’t bounce back so fast now. Always interesting.
Thanks 🤗
I absolutely hate those tiny mosquitoes. We just happened to drive down to Florida two different years when they were having a major infestation of them. We were camping in a tent, and they were so tiny, they could easily get through the mesh on the windows. Their bite was much more itchy than regular mosquitoes, and it continued to itch for days. I wound up sleeping in the minivan both times.
It's a real pain!!
Thank you for sharing Jean’s music. I think my favourite was Here We Are. Have a great rest of the week!
Thank you! You too!
Looking forward to seeing the update on the tiny house reno.
Hope this message finds you doing ok. Have you tried using those sticky fly strips posted in different areas of your property? The concert by Jean Mann was wonderful. Thank you for sharing
it with us. Sending you much love❤ from Richmond, Va. Harriet, Jim and Yuki
Hello Harriet and Jim, yes they work well for the midges and mozzies, but the big flies are clever to them !!!
Take care, Elaine 💕🏠🎶
We have to have a custom declaration on the outside of every overseas parcel stating gift, weight and price. Do others not do that.
Unsure Ivy, yes in the UK, but sent a parcel to the UK and there was no declaration!!!🤔
Kudos to Peter and Laney who asked their friend Jean to do a benefit concert.
Hi Elaine & Darren, how lovely to raise that amount of money for the bombaras loved the concert Jean Mann’s voice was beautiful. I bet you about the flies they used to drive me mad in Spain as soon as you sat outside they were there it is the summer, once it gets colder they will go away. I couldn’t go outside with the flies so I stayed indoors with the patio doors open and the fly screens pulled across.❤️❤️
In the shade is less intense Maureen, but yep they are doing my head in. Indoors is a wonderful respite from them, but with all the dust and painting we have left the fly screens off occasionally. Then it's a game of who can kill the most each evening!!!😆😆😆
I'm really looking forward to listening to Jean Mann ! On Saturday I think? Nice Pipcast!
Hi Jan, we posted the concert last Sunday, 1st Oct, still available to watch 👍🎶
@@PensionersinPortugal oh good ~ thanks!
Hello, just a comment on your title- Remember Paradise is what you make it, not what you expect it to be😉
As far as the flies, if either of you can sew, buy a couple of floppy brimmed hats and sew a mesh screen material ( that you can see through) around the bottom of the brims. Have it long enough to reach your shoulders. It may look silly, but it’s only until they are gone for the season 🤓 Best of luck !
Great idea 👍
You need some citronella candles burning 😊
Yes we do use them, not always effective, but thanks 🤗
Hi Max! Good boy! Snap at those pesky flys!
He tries, 🐶🐶💕
Flies, flies, midges, mosquitoes, mopani flies were the worst growing up in Zimbabwe. Back home we would make traps out of 2 litre plastic coke bottles. Cut the top third off, turn it upside down by inserting it inside. We would put rotten meat with fresh dung from farm animals with a little poison. Make two/ three holes to hang them up in the trees (about 100 meters from your home to the four corners). We would change these every week because they would get so full of dead flies and mosquitoes etc. another way is to plant these nine plants/herbs in your garden and in window boxes. Mosquitos and flies hate them. They are Sage; Petunias; Lemon Grass (essential oil); Mint (essential oil); Catnip (essential oil) Marigolds; Rosemary; Lavender; Basil. Growing Nasturtiums don’t repel, but attract pests, but grow this plant around cucumbers, tomatoes, squash. These pests like aphids, beetles, flies. Hope this helps yes I did enjoy her music, I to don’t have any use for them, so I don’t need them. Bless someone else.
Great ideas 👍
We are having a similar experience living in the chaos of renovations and everything takes longer than I think it will. And those flies are driving us mental!
Take care ❤
Yes, I often think of you when I'm fed up with the dust and not being able to find anything. You always appear calm and organised 🤗.
We've done it in every home we've live in, but we much younger then and it rarely gets over 25°c in NE England 😆😆😆
@@PensionersinPortugal I try to be calm and organized but sometimes the chaos gets the better of me. 😳 I often forget where I put things last time I cleaned and sometimes the disorganized state of the house gives me anxiety, but it's slowly improving as we get more renovations done.
Hope you guys have a great week! ❤️
Have you seen the air purifier made out of box fan and 3 or 4 20 x 20 filters? During the "time" people were making them a lot because they couldn't afford them better ones or they were out of stock. A lot of DIYs were using them while doing projects.
We call mosquitoes no see-ums in the South.
Well that's exactly right...the big one's that really bite you, I never see or feel until 24hours later!! At least I can feel the tiny midge and squish them!!!
Aww, you lovely people!! So nice to listen to you both 💙 Well, I'm pretty sure that you didn't have 30-35/40℃ when you did renovations in the UK, eh? That must be the real big difference this time! Growing up partially in the north, I totally get it with the midges. Nasty habit of them to destroy our nice outdoor evening meal. Your neighbours might have some local tips and tricks🦟 See you on Saturday. xx
Hi Katarina, yes I'm sure you do experience the midge!!!! Every year my Dad would plan a holiday to Scotland, every year Mum and I would over rule him because of weather and midge😆😆😆
I tried to sign up to jeans contact but the page said it’s not a secure site???
Now then, I’m fed up with those pesky flies!!😅 We’ve been plagued with the tiniest wee black things these past few months. At first I thought it was because our farmers were liberally spreading ‘good stuff’ on the fields surrounding me but no, regardless of what was/wasn’t being spread they just keep coming. My window ledges look like a fly cemetery! I have visions of you wearing floppy hats with netting coming down to shield yourselves from the black pests. Thanks as always and like you, I fully understand having checks and balances for security but there is a limit !!! Take care folks xx
Thanks Isobel, hope you're well and the flies are dying off soon!!💕🤗
Looking forward to Saturday's video. Se what you guys been up to with your renovations. X
Thanks Guys, I need some energy.....can only work for a couple of hours each day...poor Darren is doing more than his fair share!!🧤🏠👍
@@PensionersinPortugal Take a break! You deserve it. You have done a lot this year Elaine. X.
have to agree the postal toll BS is so annoying and frustrating... just send me my dang packages... and if it's a gift I have no clue since it's a GIFT... but nooo they are so afraid you get something and doesn't pay your 25 cent of toll...
definetly enjoyed Jeans music and if I am the lucky winner I can pick it up in person when I move down there :D
Excellent!!🤗
🌟👍🍀💐
