Bought this car 1 month ago, wow. It’s sooo much fun! It looks unreal, it’s so sharp and quick. Modern. Daily drive is amazing. Looks soo much better in person, and honestly, the best hot hatch for me. And I’ve had an S3 before and golf R. There’s just something about BMW’s, they’re special.
It‘s an amazing car until you have driven an F20 M135 or M140

This car is probably better but the old M135i just looked cooler in my opinion, the fact you could get a BMW 6c in-line and RWD in a hatchback was just special!

The F20 had a better engine and was RWD. Doesn't mean it was actually a better car dynamically. It was soft and handled like a boat, couldn't put the power down without LSD.. It needed a lot of mods to actually be good. What you said about this car not really being a proper M car could also be said about the F20. This is better in many ways out of the box.

That was the m140i’s main highlight because it sounded awesome and had one of the best 6 cylinders, but apart from that it lacked behind its competitors in handling and usability (especially in the UK as you couldn’t get Xdrive). The fact you had to mod it to be good means that this M135i is a better car straight from BMW as it handles better from more sorted suspension and AWD. I agree with you though, as a drivers car the M140i is next level, and also remember BMW has a M240i and M340i which is can sort of solve the problem of losing the M140i
The rose tinted specs are thick with the old F20. The chassis was a 286 bhp chassis at best, and was an oversized lump hammer with the 3.0 litre, no finesse at all and not a proper BMW, in that sense - whose chassis should always be able to contain the engine. This one couldn't.

For not much more, you can buy a m240i with the B58 inline 6.

Dunno, if you've got the 55k, you also got enough for the 58k. And you'll get a lot of discount, which will(in numbers) be higher than on the 135i, since the base price is lower.

You mean 11:21 ? Of course not because this Van was not Polizei it was a BAG. BAG is called the Federal Office for Goods Transport so they dont care about a small hatchback going 200 with 1 guy in the car.
I literally just sold my mk8 golf R (after 2 years) and picked one of these up yesterday. Interior is so much nicer, car feels a lot more grown up. Is more acoustically insulated, more low end torque which is handy for everyday driving. Haven't pushed it yet due to the 1200 mile run in, but can tell the steering is quite numb and is a bit less urgent than the golf. Unless you're tracking these, the m135i is far nicer. Launch control on the mk8 R is amazing tho, and acc will be missed.
Have you had DCC in both? Im curious how it feels on a bumpy road
@@Ramzes945 no DCC on both. The golf was on the standard 18inch wheels, bmw on the 19s which you can’t get dcc on; so both stock suspensions. The bmw has a better suspension surprisingly, even tho it has bigger wheels. Both suspensions were perfectly fine for British roads, unless you’re coming from an suv or something. Would imagine a golf with dcc would destroy the bmw suspension tho
I find the gearbox almost ruins it though. And I agree on the steering, completely void of any feedback.
Now it's just a hatch like the rest of the bunch. The magic is gone!

The 140 did it for me because of rwd and straight six. I had an 140iX for a year. Damn I miss it.. May god bring these hatches back.

I moved into a 2023 with the revisions from a FL i30N. It is light years ahead of the competition but you are correct it's not a hot hatch it's a comfortable fast car and as I'm approaching 40 I'm right in their target group of people to buy😂😅
This should be named the 125i / 130i. The fact that they saved cost on the gearbox and didn’t even use the ZF8 is appalling.
The M in M135i still stands for marketing. A 2019 M140i from 5 years ago would still run circles around this abomination.

M140i wasn't any better in terms of dynamics, it handled like a boat and was less of an M car in terms of handling than this. Even if it was RWD, that doesn't mean anything. And if you actually drove this car you would know that this Aisin isn't any worse than ZF in any way. F20 needed a lot of mods to suspension and brakes to actually be good. It was like a 118d with M sport suspension and a bigger engine, just a mess that people who didn't drive them fast glorify for what it is on paper.
@@hassyg4083 Been there done that , from a dig once the rear wheel drive hits 3rd (90km/h) it’s game over. On a roll the rear wheel drive is actually lighter and faster than the x drive - easy 10 sec range with just a downpipe.
This is in the 12-13 second range - think about what a gap that is. If you can’t I’ll equate it for you - train lengths in a race.

Nope. Any bends, and the new one will absolutely destroy the old six-pot. It didn't grip, and hit didn't handle. People pray at the six-pot altar, and forget all of that.

Interesting review, I had one of the first 2019 cars until I swapped it for a 2023 model. Definitely agree the whole car feels sharper but I put that down to the new car having adaptive suspension. The gearbox (while its still no ZF) is a noticeable improvement over the original even in comfort mode its lost the general 'laziness' and lag it had before.
I went from a 6 cylinder E39 to a 4 cylinder F31, was MUCH quieter in the E39 compared to the F31.
Tho the power in the F31, WOW! Non turbo compared to turbo is brilliant! 🤭
F20 will always feel more special than the f40, even though that on paper, the f40 is the better daily.
Please do the 2024 128ti as next!
Perhaps apart from the engine, the F40 is a massive improvement on the F20 in my eyes.
Better quality and better looking (yes, the F20 is not a good looking car).
I can understand the appeal of a turbo charged 3 Litre straight six engine in such a compact car, but that's not the whole story.
The biggest downside of the F40 M135i are the fanboys of the old M135/140i.
For real, i see so many butt hurt fanboys while this is an excellent car. Engine is even more reliable than F20 (not talking about B58, but the N models)

I bought it brand new 2 months ago. My friend has an older one but not 140i. Extra space in new one is massive improvement, the quality of the interior is amazing, like it said, very capable and very fast car. Feels more powerful than 306bhp, probably the mild hybrid helps. The Harmon Cardon sounds better than in my 730d 2021 year, played with all settings and somehow it feels more deep in 135i. Only did 700 miles (1000km), engine sounds better now than when picked up. On the good quality road is amazing in the corners, seriously capable, on the English B road average quality seams a bit nervous. But extremely happy, especially with monthly payments as it was cheaper by £100 a month vs golf R and mercedes a35amg. 5 cylinder like audi would be even better. Still amazing little but big hatchback:)
Strange, because I had the previous gen M140i (F20) LCI and now an M340i (G20) LCI and the Harman Kardon in my G20 is truly horrendous while in my F20 it was very, veeeery good. I feel like they did some serious cost savings with the sound system on the LCI (the pre-LCI's Harman Kardon is amazing) which might or might not have something to do with the chip shortage that was still in full swing when it was produced just over a year ago. That last part would explain why your M135i sounds so good, because the chip shortage is now close to over. I truly miss the Harman Kardon from my F20, except for the drivetrain and chassis, that was my favourite feature of the entire car. I find it outrageous that they put such an awful sound system in an €85000 car, truly pissed off about that and that's not the only cost savings they've done. Aside from that, if the M135i has some of the DNA of the M140i (don't know, never driven one) I'm sure you're having a blast. I still miss that car dearly, even though the M340i is fantastic to drive as well. Enjoy mate and congrats on the sick ride
@BlueBull696 actually it make sense. I paid £60k for 6 months old 730d xdrive. The car is amazing on motorway and super heavy on normal road hahaha then 135i I really fun to drive. I even parked them next to each other and had the same tune playing on both. It is not a night and day difference but clearly visible (listen to hahha) well can hear the difference.
I'm thinking to change my 730d to 2023 cla 45s amg or bmw 340i xdrive, 340d xdrive bmw 840d xdrice or merc e400d cupe 4 matic. And first thing on all of them which been tested first was a sound system. Today had a test drive 340i estate (combi) 2022 with out Harmon cardon system (think just normal as every speaker had no branding and the twitter in the door was missing) yet it sounded bloody nice. :)

Also, cars built between March 2020 and November 2020 (some 2020 and 2021 models) may have a bad HK amplifier. If this applies to your car, get it checked by your dealer.
It's a good car for people that don't know what engine is in their car and if they have RWD, FWD or 4WD, or just do not care and just want to drive a fast smaller BMW.. That's by far most people.. They drive a BMW because it's a BMW and a M135i because it's the top model and has M-badges everywhere so they feel they drive something special.. In reality it's still mainly marketing and no more special than a Golf-R, Mini JWC, or any other FWD based hotch hatch with 2.0L turbo 4-clinders these days.. The magic and special feeling about having a 6-cilinder and RWD is simply gone.. One positieve thing imho about this car is that it still has the i-drive 7 dash, not the lastest ergonomically worse tablet 8 version..

I was wondering the same. Seems to be the original exhaust but I thought BMW removed those sounds with software updates in later models.

If you live in the UK , i would highly consider getting your gearbox tuned by dervtech if its already available, my stock numbers 0-100 are 4.45 with the gearbox tune alone.
The hood is ridiculously small, no wonder the B58 can't fit in there.
It's been almost 5 years now since the F40 has been released, about time for a LCI/new gen.
This is a fwd platform. Shared with Mini. It's not designed to fit longitudinal 6 cilinders engines, and not rwd.
Really missing RWD
My M135i is from July 2019. What you are describing about the gearbox is exactly what I feel. Could an update to the gearbox fix this issue since it is essentially the same gearbox? What irritates me the most is the "jolt" at high RPM in comfort mode and the car wanting to set off while on a standstill and having to "overbreak". Any advice?
In terms of interior build quality, it is satisfactory. However, the 2023-2024 version of the F40 is not superior to the 2019-2022 F40 versions. They have removed certain interior components, such as ambient lights in the rear doors and some chrome elements.
People comparing it with the old M140i should really be comparing it with the old M135i. Same numbers. 🤪

In all fairness , the rwd 1 series was a sloppy car . I loved mine but it was not a precise car . I drove a 120 i the new model and except for that there is less emotion it was a far sharper car

Living in France I plan to buy a M135i, but from 2020 to avoid paying 20k€ ecologic taxes… I don’t find answers to my questions on internet : can someone explain me the differences between the 2020 and the new 2024 model?
Suspension upgrade with models build in mid-2022. Software remap when it comes to the gearbox (more aggressive down/upshifts especially in Sport mode), quieter exhaust and no more burbles with models build in 11/2020. You get more fake sound from the speakers instead.
Also they are now limited at 254 kph speedometer instead of 260, which lowers the top speed from 250 to 240ish. But that goes for any BMW build after 10/2020 that is limited at 250.
So basically you want more exhaust sound you need one build before 11/2020 and if you want a better suspension setup and more aggressive upshifts you need one build in 05/2022 and later models. They haven’t changed much else in 2023 and 2024.
It’s about time they replaced this model it’s been out for 5 years

I drive x2 m35i stage 2, also the gearbox is tuned with xhp stage 3 and it shifts brilliant, fast af in sport mode and smooth yet fast in comfort.

This channel is definitely one of the reasons why I went for a B58 240i rather than for some 4cyl hot hatch. And having driven the 135i, I would advise anyone that likes cars to go for an older B58 1-/2-series rather than for this 135i. Even though it is certainly a nice hot hatch.

Lol I’ve had my early 2021 model for 6 months and I’ve done 20k in it, it’s just hit 50k on the clock now, great car all it’s had from me is brake pads and spark plugs
@@letluke4 It's a blast to drive, i have the 19" wheels so i couldn't get the adaptive suspension, but even with the passive m-sport suspension its pretty comfy. The remus exhaust changes the car completely and adds to the overall enjoyment. I work from home, so don't get to drive it as much as i like. Got the pro & tech pack on it too, the HUD is awesome.

I just bought a 2020 M135i and I‘m in love with the car. Its my first M car and tbh i can‘t compare it to others. What I can say is that the interior of f20/f21 is so boring compared to the f40

I agree, i think the 128ti is a more special car and when moving is just as fast,,,lighter, better suspension setup and nicer interior,,,indeed M128 it is good praise for it. less of them on the road too makes them more rare.
I am renting the BMW M135i right now. It’s a good car, it’s efficient, but there is no passion to drive it. And the pop and bang, it’s just cheap tuning.
The former BMW M140i was 10 times better, with a 6 cylinders engine.
I had one for a month after I rebuilt it and it was dog 💩
In a real world scenario 99% of people can hammer this thing on a wet and windy road quicker than the old 1 series 135. Rose tinted glasses with the f20
