I’m in love with the medium format look - on film or digital - and am seriously close to selling all my DSLR gear to fund a digital back for my RZ67 and/or Mamiya 645 AFD. Your videos are extremely informative and helpful!
Dj Toman DO IT!! I will not say you won’t regret it because I didn’t know if I should regret it for many months. Many jobs I could have taken (events or weddings and stuff to get some coins) I had to reject so I was unsure I did the right thing. But in fact that helped me to push over those jobs and at the end of the day I forced myself to focus on what I really wanted to shoot. Now I can say I would do it again. But it was hard to get used to the new system. But if you want a humble advice, just do it! If you totally hate it, put the digital back up for sale and get some of your old gear back. But after this many years I have not even once think in even getting a DSLR as a second camera at all.
I don’t recommend it. Better get a Pentax 645D or better a Z. You can find a Pentax 645D for less than any digital back. And the lenses are not that expensive. Or you can get a Pentax 645Z for about $4,000 USD. The only difference is the sensor, CCD vs CMOS, if you shoot only daylight or studio, the Pentax 645D will suffice, but if you need to use higher ISO’s than 400, you’ll need the Z. The 645Z sensor is superb! And you’ll have autofocus and live view.
Pablo Villegas Thanks for your input. I love the look of CCD sensors and would never shoot higher than 400 ISO for the type of work I would be doing.
But in the end I decided to get a Nikon D850 for digital work and continue using my Mamayas (645 Pro TL, RZ67, and 645 AFD) for film. Maybe some day in the future I'll think seriously about medium format digital and will revisit these considerations.
Dj Toman the Nikon will give you bigger files for sure. I have tried one time, I had the D700 and it was my next logical option. So I borrowed one. Sadly I had used a digital back already and when opening the files for retouching no matter what I do I couldn’t get that digital back quality, even with that much Mpx at the end of the day it was the sensor type and the capture size. But sometimes I guess is better to play it safe. My first digital back sales for less than 2k (or around there) 22 Mpx and totally worth it for the quality. It was the Leaf Aptus 22.
This helped me a lot, thank you. Aside from googling the minor differences, it comes down to usage, and thank you for sharing your experience.
+Michael Bradley Anytime Mr Bradley it's always a pleasure.
Follow up question, I have capture one issues, it won't run correct on my PC, (it's a very powerful workstation, not cheapo) so I am curious, of the backs, which will open directly in Lightroom, if possible?
Michael Bradley great question, the easy answer is most of cameras in the world work with Lightroom lol
Here you go:
helpx.adobe.com/camera-raw/kb/camera-raw-plug-supported-cameras.html
Thank you sir, I shot end of runway last season with the PhaseOne XF w/IQ3 100, and it was a pain in the butt, lol I had to fight hard with capture one. I am downloading ACR 9.9 as it show support for it. Also, I am on lightroom 5.7... I dont want to pay subscription fee, I dont want to be locked into it forever
Coming here in 2024 as I am considering selling my Nikon D800 kit and getting a RZ67 Pro IID II D, so I was looking at Digital Backs for them. Everything was going great, and I had pretty much settled on getting the camera plus an IQ140 back, but THEN went to find an adaptor plate....(a HX701) and average price is €2000. Absolute INSANITY. Totally batshit. Two fuggen grand for an adaptor. Urgh. So yeah, that's the end of my plans. Full frame it remains for me. Thanks universe and money grabbing leeches.
Loved all the mario sounds Hahahaha You should do a comparison with some more modern high megapixel cameras like the Sony A7r2 or the Canon 5DSr, that would be huge publicity to all medium format brands. It's always cool to watch your videos and your increidble work even from the other side of the globe Julio. Take care!
Alexis Marchesini thank you so much! It was fun editing it, thought it would be too boring just me talking and talking. I wanted to do a comparison with some of those new DSLR but I don't know anyone with any of those cameras to lend me for a test. I have a friend with a D800 I don't know if a 36 Mpx would sound as a good comparison?
I have a D810, but it's more than just image quality that I prefer medium format.. it's the fact I can shoot tight head shoulder shots with 180mm from 4ft away. The medium format look has a lot of perspective differences. If a full frame camera used the same lens, they would have to step back further for the same field of view, but then perspective changes. Think dolly zoom for video, that's an example of same subject size with different mm. I don't ever have to use lower than 80mm for 90% of my work, even full body I can shoot with 80-100mm
Yes Julio, that would be a good starting point. The dynamic range, the colors and tones, the sharpness the editability of the raw files, you know name it. it doesn't need to be super scientific as long as you can prove your point :p
I’m waiting to find out what’s going on with Leaf too. The Credo has to have an upgrade one day, or I guess Mamiya Leaf might disappear, hope not.
Danielle Judd well leaf is being purchased by Phase One and they seem to be focused on their IQ system and their XF camera. So credo might be dead.
Now with all the new "budget" cropped medium format sensors we get have you ever considered dropping the traditional digital back set up for something like a Fujifilm GFX or a Hsselblad X1D or so?
Embeded sensors? hard to clean and impossible to upgrade without buying a whole new camera? No thank you.
Dude(!), awesome video! You just dropped the science of digital backs, I knew nothing and now I know a little. Out of curiosity, have you worked with the Fujifilm GFX, it seems modern and more affordable than a digital back.
Its a cool camera, it also does good video and all, but you would be stuck with an embedded sensor. So no upgrades, also, is it a CMOS sensor?
Thank you for the useful contents. I've got a RZ67 II Pro with a PhaseOne 30+ digital back for M645 mount. I picked up an adapter from LensMod for $200 and everything's been working smoothly except for two-shot mode. I've tried everything I can think of for single shot mode, but I can't figure it out. Is there any way to set the P30+ for single shot?"
Love your work please keep it up... and by the way sounds.. do work for what your talking about... Well done sir... well done.
+Anthony Dark Thank you sooo much for your comment I really appreciate to know what viewers think! 🙇🏻
I got a question on my channel regarding using a ZD-back on a RB/RZ-67 still was fishable and if that would be “worse quality” today then a Nikon D850 or Sony A7r. I thought that it wasn’t just Mp-count but also sensor aria that made a camera good. What’s your take on it?
Oh, the adapter you mentioned on the video is not cheap ! Almost $1500 on b&h without a cord !
B&H has always super expensive stuff. I have never bought from them. I got my adapter from www.captureintegration.com when I got my first used digital back from them too.
I switched to digital cameras a long time ago. There are some digital cameras that do not have digital backs that take relatively good photos.
It’s very relative to talk about a good photo. “Art” aside, the capture quality really depends on the capturing surface and developing process. The purpose is to capture a luminous refraction into a permanent medium like film. So quality of lens I would consider much less important than the actual film and developing process used, old chemicals, wrong timings or temperatures could and will diminish the capture surface’s perceived at the time of the exposure.
Hey Julio hope you're Well! I'm in Japan on the 10th of Nov to the 16th and wondered where I could go to buy some accessories for my rz67 including the viewfinder and a 35mm equivalent sekor lens (i have 110 and 180). Also I'm considering going with a digital back but worried it won't suit my style
Ferhan Khan Photography the best camera store for professionals in Tokyo is GinIchi(dot)com you can probably find everything you need there. They do have some used backs and other stuff.
Happy to hear you are in Japan. Hope you enjoy and don’t mind the bad weather we have some days.
muchisimas gracias thank you for such an indepth review -this help me a lot making decisions thank you man
EPIC! I love to help! Which one you will go for?
@@RyuuzakiJulio well you see I already have an IQ140 back but have been getting really varying results with it on 6x9 and 4x5, not very good at all lots of issues with firing timing with wake up cables and such- recently I stumbled on your video reviewing this b/c I thought I could use the phaseone IQ140 also on a rb67 adapater for hasselblad V onto the Goodman Zone which I have just gotten
any thoughts!!
@@h.sinclair Hahahaha busy camera setup you got. I love it.
As a studio photographer shooting portraits and wanting to shoot tethered, do you have a particular digital back you'd recommend? Also thank you for all of your content! I purchased an RZ PRO II a week ago and thanks to your videos they have given me the confidence to use it!
Justin Sisson Justin Sisson awesome comment and great question. With any MF digital back you can't go wrong at all. As you saw here I got really great shoots with every digital back I've used. Aptus, P series, IQ. All of them do great shoots. If anything I would suggest would be don't get crazy high mpx, it will only make flaws more difficult to retouch, a good 22 mpx to 33 mpx is just about right. Also big sensor is nice. But for the speed I can totally say the IQ is glorious. But if it's your first back do like I did and start with the cheap one and slowly sell and upgrade.
Does the regular (Non Pro IID) need an adapter plate for the aptus 22?
Hello Julio, I had my Leaf DM22 for my RZ67 II, I simply love it, now I need another back for backup, after the PhaseOne P40+, what's your suggestion? These 2 back, which one you prefer?
I saw alot of images were shot from DM series and P series, DM series is so amazing on skintone and very easy can tell its own features, P series not give me that feeling, but still want to listen your professional advice.
Thanks for your time.
let the sounds in , thx great video
Rico Kieffer thank you bro
I have a rz pro 2 so just get a 701 adapter and the digital back and I’ll be good? Or pc sync too
Oh that's cool. I been looking at getting a RZ just to do 6x7 MF film but did not consider a digital back. Do you know if the RZ67 will take a digital back or would I have to get a Pro II?
Read the comments above someone asked and he explained it.
Julio, quick question: I see you're using the Mamiya adaptor on the RZ67PROii. The adaptor's manufacturer claims that it only works with the "D" version of the RZ body. Am I missing something?
In part yes and in part no. The adapter I am using it is the one designed for the Pro IID, model # HX-701, to say that it ONLY works on the D, hmm, this adapter comes with connections to the body to communicate with the back. The Pro II does not have those connections so it won't work "as intended".
Let me put it simpler.
There is 2 models of the Mamiya adapters:
HX-705 (Old version without connectors for the digital back around 500 dlls if you can find one)
and
HX-701 (The one I have, made for the Pro IID, 900 dlls)
Both can be mounted on either camera body, and both can use M mounts, both can rotate with the RM lever function and both are able to get you photos no matter if its Pro II or Pro IID. But only the HX-701 ON a ProIID will be able to "communicate" the body to the camera. I say "communicate" because you don't really get aperture info or lens mm info, you only get the signal to start and end the exposure. When not using this combo (HX-701 and Pro IID) you will need one pc-sync adapter, some digital backs use a generic one, and some digital backs use a special one, but it will just connect to the PC-SYNC port of the lens.
Why did I got the HX-701? To be honest, because I didn't knew it had the other option. I was never planning to get a Pro IID just to save me 1 cable, and the only info I could find was pointing to this adapter. I guess is fine, but is 400 extra dlls for a feature (to save me a cable and the latency mode on the digital back) that I don't require.
Sorry for the long answer, hope it made things a little more clear for you. If you have any other question let me know.
Julio Ryuuzaki thank you very much.
If you had to pick a digital back today for the rz proii which would you pick.
hey I really want to buy this camera. but the pro ii version is way to expensive for my budget. I'm planning to buy the mama rz67 first version on Ebay used. and im wondering if I could also use the digital back on the first version. please if anyone know, please let me know. that would help me a lot. :)
Hey man, here is an old video where I talk of Pro II vs first version. ua-cam.com/video/374qCrjnVUU/v-deo.html
Julio Ryuuzaki and may i ask. I am new to analog system 😂. What is the function of digital back?
Forgive me if this is a dumb question but is it possible to mount these on the RZ67 Pro II (I mean I don't have a Pro IID, just the previous version)
Yes of course. I’ve never had a proiid I have another Video explaining everything about the RZ67 and digital backs. All you need to know.
ua-cam.com/video/Ufy60VQgnbo/v-deo.html
@@RyuuzakiJulio awesome!!!
Can you compare your 6x7 files with scanned film images.
Hi there, I'm very interested in possibly purchasing an RZ to use with my P45+, which I currently use primarily with a Cambo Ultima and Schneider Super Symmar HM 120mm lens. Do you find you need to shoot LCC files at every focal length and focal distance that you shoot at with the Mamiya RZ sekor lenses?
What about focus, how you can get so sharp manually with mamiya?
Klaudijus Kairys I made a 15x magnifier viewfinder. So I can zoom a lot in a specific point of the photo where I want to focus. ua-cam.com/video/LyvZoMryqbM/v-deo.html
I know you have not tried using the mamiya 645, but i just got the pro tl and would really like to know what adaptors and backs i can use with the camera. So far online has only mentioned the kodak dcs or the hasselblad imacron ixpress... Really would like to use a p45 (or similar) with an adaptor.
So my question is, are there many digital backs for sale in japan? And what options do i have?
The mamiya 645 pro tl is an electronic driven camera, so no leaf shutter.
Wilson Law digital backs are made for a few camera mounts same digital back (let’s say P40+) can come with a different mount H, V, M, C mounts are the most common (at least all I know) The M mount is specially designed for Mamiya and Phase One 645 cameras. Yes there is places you can find digital backs in Japan, either from the official Phase One dealer or used in several stores. Your goal is to find an M type mount digital back. Hope it helps.
Julio Ryuuzaki thanks for the reply. But would i require an adapter for an m mount digital back? Or an adaptor is only used if i want to mount a hasselblad v mount on my m mount? Does the camera only need to connect to the back via a pc cord to tell it to start recording then I simply take the picture?
Wilson Law M mounts are designed to be connected directly to the Mamiya and Phase One without adapters. The adapters are for large format and other bigger cameras, you can’t adapt a V mount on a 645 Mamiya, but you can adapt any mount with a large format or the RZ67.
The backs have several modes to shoot, if your camera is pretty old and has no connectors for the back to work on, then the back would need a sync cable connected to the lens X-Sync or PC-Sync plug
Understood. Thanks for the great help! Will start looking for a back soon (most likely phase one). Any suggestions on websites to begin? Im only know B&H, KEH and ebay.
Wilson Law my first back I got from captureintegration dot com after that eBay all the way.
Julio is my boy crush! Next stop ebay...
Muchas gracias
I am a professional photographer in Naples Florida. Do a lot of corporate and product photo shoots and I'm strongly considering a medium format digital back. I plan on putting it on my Hasselblad 500cm. Is this will be my first medium format digital back, which backwood you recommend as I am on a bit of a tight budget for this?
Have you tried the P45+ at 400 ISO? I wonder how it operates that way, very hard to find samples online.
Hahaha yeah I've tried it, but the reason is hard to find is because no one is happy with the result.
Did you have to do anything to get the Pro II D back to work with the Non-D version. Did you consider upgrading to the IID body for the full functionality, metadata and 1 shot mode?
bjmarchives the back is not a Pro II D they are defined by the mounts, some fit on old hasselblads V mount, some fit on new hsselblads H mount, some fit on contax cameras C mount and some fit on some 645 mamiya and phase One cameras, this are M mounts. The only thing you need is an adapter, the adapter I use on my RZ67 Pro II is made for the Pro II D, and the only benefit is that I don’t need the sync cable connected to the lens, but you don’t get any metadata at all even from the Pro II D camera. So I won’t be upgrading to the D camera.
@@RyuuzakiJulio what do you think is the best price for the Pro II d adapter?
Hujinn - Instagram I’ve seen them new for 900 dlls. Anything under that is good. Over that is not good at all.
@@RyuuzakiJulio I mean the price of the adapter (not the body)
Hujinn - Instagram yes. The HX-701 adapter. That’s the price.
Thanks, could you make a list of the six backs you were talking about. I had a hard time pulling out the model names to figure out current prices, etc.
bjmarchives you are right. I’ll add them in the description as well but here they go in the order I used them:
Phase One P45
Phase One P45+
Phase One P40+
Leaf Altus 22
Mamiya-Leaf DM 33 (Leaf Aptus II 7)
Phase One IQ140
He thanks for making this video their really isent enough ready information about digital backs.
I know, had to learn the hard way
Can we put digital back on RB 67?
Bobby Eleazar i was told that is possible, but I’m not sure about the adaptors for the RB, all you really need is a box with a lens and a PC-Sync trigger that can trigger the back. You could even use a shoe box with a hole and a manual trigger.
Hi Julio. Got the opportunity to buy an P1AF+Aptus22+80 2.8 at a very low price (1.5k $) do u think it's still a good performer? (i'll keep my a7ii and let the "CMOS run" until companies start to look more at the quality than at the details.....)
Yeah just for the Aptus 22 is already a good deal. Plus you get a basic camera to work with it before you get your adapter for your RZ sounds good to me.
thks, really want to try one of this "fat pixels" backs before they're all gone. (also, adding a film back would be nice)
gufo2k20 they are not bad. but you need a lot of light and like i said on this video, its slow. but the quality is really nice if you can illuminate accordingly.
bought it.....yes, need a lot of light but the rendition is superb. You were right, this things plays in a different league than FF.
gufo2k20 absolutely, as soon as you get a CCD sensor you are in for a level up already.
2019 I have an RB67. Would you buy a back today?
Hi Ruben. You mean a digital back? Or a film back for your RB?
Yes, but kinda expensive
Eddwin Gregg When they where new they cost about 30,000 USD. Right now an Aptus 22 is about 2,000 USD maybe less.
Does this work if I have a Mamiya 645 Super? 😲
This you mean digital backs? Yeah M mount I believe is the Mamiyas 645 backs. But I don’t have a 645 Super to test.
Buen día.
¿Cuál respaldo le sirve a la Mamiya RB67?
Muchas gracias.
@@RyuuzakiJulio Muchas gracias.
@@RyuuzakiJulio Disculpa, no encuentro dichos adaptadores.
What's the difference between Pro and Pro II ?
I talked about it on another video, but quick answer, the Pro II has Half Steps Speed settings and Fine Focusing Knob. Pretty much that's it, but makes it totally worth it, specially if you think to have a digital back someday in the future.
Hi again! Do you think Phase One P45+ still worth it in 2020 (in the era of sony a7r4)? I found it for $2400 in a very good condition
The era of Sony a7r4 😂 as long as they keep using CMOS sensors their image quality would be inferior to a real CCD sensor. Even the 22 Mpx from the Almost vintage Aptus 22 has better pixel than quality than the newest or upcoming CMOS sensors. Is just how they work physically. And yeah the price sounds like a dream.
Btw just make sure is an M mount first
@@RyuuzakiJulio yes, one guy in my city (Moscow) sell it with Mamiya 645DF+ and accessories for $3350, but he can sell P45+ separately for $2400. He made 20.000 shots with it.
@@RyuuzakiJulio i also heard that the best digibacks for colors are the oldest ones like Kodak ProBack / PhaseOne (20/21/25) / old Aptus backs. And the modern ones are just "mirrors to the reality". Can you agree with that?
Hujinn - Instagram yes that’s a good deal. With or without the camera.
Old backs have better colors, nah, is not about how old it is, is the sensor technology, CCD sensors deliver a more accurate and honest reading for each pixel than CMOS.
what was you smoking in the intro scene?
Vape 💨
Hey, will any of those backs work on a Mamiya 645 Pro Tl? Thanks.
I wish I knew the answer but I’ll be honest and say I don’t know. I know the M type mount refers to a Mamiya 645 but I don’t even know how many Mamiya 645 types of cameras they had. 645DL+ 645ProTurboMax2000, if your 645 Pro TI works with electronics, like has a digital display and autofocus and stuff, yeah maybe it will work. But I’m not sure.
@@RyuuzakiJulio I heard something about ixpress 132c hasseblad back but it is a unicorn, can't find it. I'll get my hands on an old used Mamiya 645 pro tl if I find the answer to that question I share in the comment section.
Will the RZ pro iiD adapter work on the original RZ67 Pro 1 ?
Not sure about the pro I. But I think it might, the Pro II film backs work on the Pro 1, I don’t think they are different. But if you aren’t planning to get the IID you should maybe look into the HX-705 adapter instead of the Pro IID HX-701 adapter.
Thanks Julio Ryuuzaki. I’ve tried looking on the web for the HX-705, but can’t seem to find online anywhere. It doesn’t seem to show up in google search either. If there is a link you could direct me to the HX-705 adapter, I would greatly appreciate it my friend
Thank you very much.
I don’t think they are in production anymore. But they pop-up from time to time in eBay. If you have tried b&h and such I don’t know where else. Perhaps captureintegration(dot)com send them an email they are very helpful.
Thank you very much Ryuuzaki. I will try that. 😊
Hey! Do you have the Pro IID Rotating adapter on a non Pro II body? How did you do that? :)
+Bo Dez Hi Bo, nothing at all. The HX-701 (made for the Pro IID) fits perfectly on the Pro II of course you would need a cable. I talk a lot about it on this video:
ua-cam.com/video/374qCrjnVUU/v-deo.html
But if you just want a short answer. For the Pro II Mamiya had made a HX-705 that has no connections and its 400-500 dlls cheaper than the HX-701
Thanks for the info, and so quickly to! I will check out the video! Does it mean you can use a Phase One backs without the wake up/sync cables?
Leaf, Phase One, Hasselblad, what matters the most is the Mount Type. I also talk on that video about all this. In short you will need a Sync Cable to take the shoot, and a Wakeup Cable if you want to use your digital back in Non-Latency Mode, basically the back goes to sleep until you half press the shutter.
is a Phase one H20 usable today?
Well, that back is a CCD 16Mpx sensor. Which in quality terms looks better than a Full frame 12mpx 35mm camera. I would argue that better even than any CMOS sensor can give you. But, the back doesn't have a display or menu on it, it also needs a strong firewire connection to work since it also doesn't have a memory card slot. So you will have to keep it connected to a machine with Firewire capabilities. Now, firewire on the newer computers is not as reliable as it was before many times requiring you to use a powered Firewire hub. The back cannot be triggered by software so you will still need to trigger your camera manually to get the photo sent to the computer. Is it usable? yeah if its on good condition, Im not really a fan of square format sensor since any rectangular print or post will require you to cut out some of that 16mpx you got. AND ISO range is only 50-100. Not to mention that you need to find an adapter for your RZ which I might be wrong but it might just be a V mount requiring you to get a type of adapter that does not rotate (which it doesn't really matter since the back has a square format sensor, but it will matter if one day you want to update to a better back). I guess the question is if I recommend getting one. My honest answer is, if you already have a digital back and you found an H20 for really cheap and you don't mind to have it just for fun then get it. If you want to actually use it, you need to be on a studio or carry your computer setup and maybe a power source with you so it will limit your shooting options a lot. If its your first digital back I would say to keep an eye open for an Leaf Aptus 22 (20 mpx) as your minimum option. Prices have dropped a lot so you can find it for less than 2k, but they come and go so you need to setup an alert on eBay or something and wait for few weeks or months before you see one popup. I wanted to make the reply clear enough, apologies for not being able to make the answer more short. Hope it helped.
Do you ever shoot on film ?
Rarely have a client that wants to wait few days just to see the preview of the photos. They want to see the photos while I am shooting to see if they need to change anything, I could be doing that with Polaroids that I can still find now, but is 3 dlls per click just for them to check. For personal projects, I had been dreaming about getting a dark room setup again (I had one in USA) but to buy it here is 2k so that might have to wait a while. But still I want to do black and white for personal projects.
i love my 9 microns pixels
+Rytis K. 9 microns? Are you shooting 16 or 22 mpx?
P25
Rytis K. Nice! The 22 Mpx model, base ISO 50 with the 4:3 format. Lovely!
Julio Ryuuzaki Yes indeed, this sensor amazing, i know its old,but still ,it produces quality that todays potato cameras ,like sony, dont come even close, there is no way to compare
Rytis K. Yeah, the power of the CCD sensors. I completely agree. Actually it doesn't even compare to the 50 mpx medium format digital back just because it uses a CMOS sensor. CCD is still way more clean.
Que onda tu cabello!!!! jajajaja
Guillermo Perez Santos Tokyo.
no more sound effects please !!! you have great content - but the sounds you've added distract from your info.
simon gentry wow mixed comments. You where not a Nintendo child?
I was a child of the Sinclair 128k - still an avid gamer - fan of your straight forward review experience - just not the sound effects ;)
simon gentry wow real veteran gamer. I did thought it was a bit overboard with the sfx, but also thought it would be too boring just having me talking for 20 mins, maybe a more calm background loop would be better? Or just voice is better to you?
I personally like the sounds.
Thank you man! I love to hear that some people still appreciates the 8Bit nostalgia
I think I just flipping burger lol
