The NBA had a scandal they hoped people would never find out about. The controversy would have blown up if it happened in the age of social media but lucky for the league this was pre-Reddit. An NBA employee posted an anonymous tell-all on a message board and this video looks at whether it could still be affecting the game today.

Also the 2018 Hornets led that year in FTD by a larger margin than what the Lakers lead this year. You think the 2018 Hornets were being favoured for their superstars and to create a narrative in that season?
Or, if you understand how bad the lakers are on defence and at shooting you'll realise opposing teams often get easier shots off except if they end up with AD in the middle, and also the lakers have little good offensive strategy but to throw it inside and iso/post up etc in the paint which leads to alot of FTA. The most egregious stat-padding the NBA does today is in the assist numbers, that's why triple-doubles have somewhat became the norm for superstars in the league or almost every week you see at least one player have one. Traditionally, an assist counts after a player scores directly or immediately after a pass from a teammate. But now, a player can do iso dribbles, then take a couple more steps then score off a pass from a teammate and it would still count as an assist.

@@Kamylamy nope. like I said, traditionally, if a scoring player does extra movements like iso dribbles, a bunch of steps right after the pass, it does not count as an assist unlike today. you only need to see Tyrese Haliburton's record-breaking 32 assist game for that. and to help you understand that, here's the actual link - ua-cam.com/video/MR-abuQovp8/v-deo.html , then at the 25-second mark, when Tyrese passed to Turner, that play wouldn't have counted as an assist in the 90's and early 2000's because Turner right after getting the pass behind the 3-point line, instead of shooting the ball, took a pump fake, then a couple of dribbles and a few more steps for the layup. if you watched basketball during those era's and compared it from today, you would know the difference....

Why would you cite a video you didn't even watch as evidence for your argument? Shit doesn't make sense. And calling it a "record-breaking 32 assist game" shows you didn't watch much of the video you're commenting on because it mentioned the actual record holding 30 assist game (from the 90s) and how it's likely fraudulent.
In fact, this whole video is about how stats such as assists were routinely manipulated during the 90s, 2000s, and before (Nick van Exel, John Stockton), and how this wasn't combated until 2010. So did you even watch the video you're commenting on at all? lmao

If you haven't actually watched the games during the 80's, 90's, early 2000's like most of us old folks did, you won't have perspective to compare with how it was today. so it was you who had no clue what you're saying that's why you can't see my point. which is, like you said, today's stats are manipulated to an extent that it became the norm unlike before when it was only done to a handful of stars and players. if you still don't get what I'm saying, Josh Hart just had a triple-double at home against the Sixers. still don't get my point? today.... everybody can get a triple-double because that's how manipulated stat keeping is unlike before when it was just reserved for the true stars of the game.

      @user-bw9qy7yl4s 2 місяці тому +2

@@PapaMatt107You can just admit you were wrong dude lmao. You called it a game, singular, and clearly meant it that way.
You said "that play wouldn't have counted as an assist in the 90's and early 2000's" when there's an even more egregious example of an inflated assist in this video for Nick van Exel in the 90s. Now you're saying it did happen, but just for some people which would be good goalpost moving if you were having this conversation verbally and not over text where I can see exactly what you previously argued.
"so it was you who had no clue what you're saying that's why you can't see my point" is a pretty silly thing to say while you change your arguments lol. It's possible you meant the things you're saying, but you certainly didn't say them or provide any reason for someone to think otherwise. For the record I've watched plenty of regular season games from those decades and full playoff series as well. I have a better idea than most how those games went.
"today's stats are manipulated to an extent that it became the norm unlike before when it was only done to a handful of stars and players" This video actually shows the average assist totals for away vs home teams, and the first time in league history it was an even ratio was after the 2010 rule implementation. This shows less bias in today's calls, not more, and to directly address your point this data indicates that entire teams (not a few individual players) directly benefited from phantom assists.
Josh Hart getting a triple double is the result of being a good basketball player and being on the floor for a long time, not conspiratorial stat padding. You're talking about a guy that has 65 career double doubles while only being a starter in 195 of his career games. A person who gets double doubles in 15% of his total games that has averaged more than 4 assists per game in multiple years is liable to get a triple double when you hand them 39 minutes in a 48 minute game. In fact, he's had two other triple doubles and his minutes for all three averages to 41.5.
Just to remind you, "triple-doubles have somewhat became the norm for superstars" was your original argument. You followed that up with "almost every week you see at least one player have one." There are 52 games this week alone, so just one player doing that doesn't really sound like some horrible epidemic in context. Triple doubles are only "somewhat" the norm for a handful of players now, like you said before, but now you're saying "everybody can get a triple-double" which is a massive leap in argument from really anything in your other comments.
Oscar Robertson and Magic are 2nd and 3rd in triple double totals over their careers. Jason Kidd, Wilt, and Bird are also top 10 for that stat. There have always been elite heliocentric players in the NBA that routinely scored triple doubles. There are certainly more of these types of players in today's game, and the statline is absolutely more common, but that's a testament to the overall skill of the league's players dramatically increasing over the years. It's immensely more difficult to make it to the NBA in 2024 than it was in the 90s. The level and quality of training has gone way up, the sport has become more accessible internationally, and kids are taking it up as their primary sport earlier and earlier. The style of coaching has changed a lot since the 2000s, which was different from the 90s, and the 80s, and so on. The rules have changed to allow players more opportunities on offense. In 2024 we're talking about a league where the 7th option on a team might be a 40% 3 point shooter, and where 7 footers who can't shoot have been almost entirely phased out.
Furthermore, if you actually look at the numbers you would see that the team with the most assists per game in 2004 was the Sacramento Kings at 25.8 a game. Last year it was the Warriors at 29.6. Not even a four assist difference per game in almost two decades. As a matter of fact, teams averaged about the same amount of assists per game from at least 2004 until 2017. After this, teams increasingly committed to modeling their offense after the Warriors' system and the assist averages are up because of it.
Again, you do not know what you're talking about.

I have a UA-cam channel (in Portuguese) and I have analyzed a few games that I thought could be suspicious. For example, in David Robinson’s quadruple-double, he only got 6 assists and 6 blocks. Walt Frazier is credited with 19 assists in game 7 of 1970 NBA Finals, even though he got only 9. But, on the other hand, I watched Skiles’ 30 AST game. Not only he had 30, but in today’s criteria of what an assist is, he would have at least 33 or 34. Olajuwon’s quadruple-double is also for real.
Edit: and for the “Duncan should have had a quadruple-double”, no he shouldn’t. Of the 8 blocks credited, 3 or 4 of them were kinda fake.

Once gambling was legalized it's obvious there would be problems. Multiple NFL players have been suspended the last few seasons for betting on games. The NBA already had Tim Donaghy. I find it hilarious that people are saying "There is no proof." Fake stats are not the problem, it's the outcome of games. Fans may be betting on a player's stats more but point spreads and over/unders are still bet on and winning and losing ultimately gets players paid more. Recent discussions about the next face of the league all centered around 1 thing: Whoever starts winning the most rings. The integrity of the game is compromised when winning and losing is not legit.
And scorekeepers have been faking stats for years now. It happens today. Literally watched Lebron throw a pass to AD, AD took 4 dribbles as he backed down in the post, he faked left went right, then shot a fade away jumper. Lebron was given the assist. NBA rules state an assist leads directly to a basket. This AD/Lebron example is not an assist but they gave Lebron one regardless. And they've been doing it for a long time. Lebron's assist stats might be the fakest stat in all of sports.
