I immediately thought of your channel when I heard this. I agree with a commenter below that she should have had an earpiece to help her, and many artists struggle with the delayed feedback in live performances. The Cyndi Lauper example from Glastonbury you featured recently is a good example. Evidently, there is a phenomena called Delayed Auditory Feedback which has this affect, and there is an interesting video about it called Testing My Speech Jammer in Public it is by Benn Jordan, and the explanation is in the third chapter beginning at 4:12. Hey Fil: The videos you do about artists of the 1960s and 1970s really point to just how natural and organic those recordings sound. To draw a comparison between music and filmmaking, you only have to look at films that were made before CGI and films that were made using CGI. For me, it doesn’t matter how slick the CGI is, I can always tell which films use CGI and which films feature actual locations and real actors. The same is true of recorded music. Auto-tune and pitch correction are usually quite detectable, and that is a distraction because the use of computers makes people’s vocals sound computerized. Another interesting facet of this is that when you listen to music from the 1960s, the recording studios had a real atmosphere to them. There is a real sense of the music being performed on a stage because you can hear the natural reverb in the recording studio, which adds to that sense of the music being organic, and and sounding authentic.

Here in the US we have a long tradition of singing the the National Anthem out-of-tune, and as you briefly allude to, the big problem is not starting low enough, and then you get stuck at the really high passage. This tune has a very wide range, and plenty of professional singers have butchered it. This girl isn't the first. It's quite common for them to get the words wrong too. Also, in the spot where she really flubbed it, for some reason she changed up the tune to make it go even higher than it normally would.

I’m not sure if you’ll ever read this but I had a funny experience as an x-audio guy around the world with pitch in crowds which was unusually surprising. It goes back to a Dave Barry article about crowds at basketball games in the US and he was amazed that when people sang “air ball, air ball” when the ball didn’t hit the rim, they were always on pitch. I tested this theory as I had worked 5 Olympics and all hockey, basketball (in an arena of course) and football in particular over the years. Amazingly the crowd was ‘dead on pitch’ singing “Air Ball” or a similar phrase in their country’ language of choice. I couldn’t believe it and thought you may find this fascinating (or not). But kudos to Dave Barry to point this out. Ps. This performer should have been taken away after the first 2 measure. Yuck. You have one of the best musical analysis shows ever. Cheers

He not only pulled a rabbit out of a hat, he was a true gentleman about it. I am very impressed on both counts, but not surprised he was so nice about it - that quality of character is only matched by his talent and mastery of the craft. I'm sure he looked at this as a challenge, something "I have to fix if I can... poor girl". It does show that pitch correction is a clever tool, essential in some cases.

I have heard little children sing that song and they did it perfectly. I actually prefer more than one singer when it comes to an anthem. There are some songs that sound better on bagpipes and church bells.

It isn’t easy. But it is quite possible even without an earpiece. The singer has to maintain pitch and rhythm. If you nail those, the crowd will sing with you. There is sound distortion to deal with so you have to keep your ears open and sing out. Drinking seldom enhances pitch.

alicesmith, The Star Spangled Banner is a very difficult song to sing under any circumstances. This woman's performance is a strong plea for America to choose a different National Anthem. Years ago there was a movement suggesting "America The Beautiful." This performance is evidence that any song is preferable, but let's agree it must not be the one entitled "America," better known as "My Country Tis of Thee."

Being drunk aside, there are certain singers that just shouldn't sing the US National Anthem. Ingrid uses that breathy, vocal fry, little girl voice that's been popular in folk-rock, singer-songwriter type music for the last 20 years. It's just not appropriate for the SSB, and she doesn't seem to be able to sing in any other way, other than the breathy, little girl, folk-rock voice.

The SSB has a range of a 15th. It should be handled with care. She has no belt or mix. And she also has no common sense to realize that she was massacring it and continued to the top notes of "Flag was still there" instead of dropping back down to the original octave and playing is somewhat safe. But despite everything she still felt the need to "grand stand" those notes. The long run, well, I cannot even fathom the note choices- wanting to riff like Mariah Carey? WTF? Stick with the little girl stuff, Ingrid.

Someone pointed out that her performance in the NPR Tiny Desk video wasn’t really singing but more like her speaking softly where her voice is in her natural register so singing the anthem was more of a vocal stretch for her. This is a very compelling example of what pitch correction can do for even the worse of performances. Which begs the question as to why a singer would even bother to achieve their best performance when they can just mail it in. This video deserves a gazillion views so people can get educated on what the abuse of pitch correction really represents.
