My father owned the 7 seas motel, at the time he owned it it was called the Rip Van. Our family lived up stairs an I witnessed the building of the Poe. Lock. I am still wondering why they named it the Poe lock, there were many jokes made contact from that name. I still cringe when I refer can to that lock name.
This is a year later but if you're still wondering it's named after Orlando Poe, a US Army Engineer who designed the lock system. He also built most of the lighthouses on the Great Lakes
Thanks for this , I was born in the soo and grew up in marquette . Had relatives on the boats and the iron mines .
Lots of good information - thanks from a Duluth watcher.
