This was a great watch. I just so happened to be reminiscing about working in Glasgow while at university and the flats crossed my mind.
I used to work as a postie and regularly delivered to the flats in their final few years. Really enjoyed watching this, and distinctly recall them feeling like an eerie ghost town by the end. I'll never forget the smell of the squeaky lift either! I sincerely hope I was the postie who delivered the good news for that gent's move 😅
Spent years in Glasgow, always felt welcome as a Geordie. Home away from home ❤

I have the fondest memories of 51, 23/4 Whitevale street with my wee Gran & Grampa 💗💙
They weren’t always the drug ridden middens they ended up. At the time they were state of the art living with under floor heating. If you came from the inner city slums? You’d have thought yourself a toff to have lived there.

Love your work, Chris, spent many years in different high flats across Glasgow and Paisley, some good memories but some mental times and it was those mental times that made me eventually leave the city altogether, but I always try to remember the good

I lived in the Gallowgate from when I was 5 years old - 1960 until 1971 before the family moved to the Roystonhill high risers. Those flats in Whitevale Street were only up a couple of months when word quickly spread that someone had fallen from a great height, me and my pals rushed to them only to see a mushy unidentifiable splat on the ground of blood and guts, never forget that, wish I hadn't gone to look. The Roystonhill flats was where I lived through my teens into my early 20's, great times there.

It was murder when the lifts were off, my mum was a home help and had a few senior citizens that she went to in there, sometimes had to walk up 7, 8, 10 floors sometimes

I heard the old tenements in Whitevale St were demolished to build a road which didnt happen ?

No road ever planned. The reason they were dismantled from top down was because of the main road yards away. The buildings were surrounded by roads!

Can't imagine living in such a enormous high and big place, stored on each other is a nice, safe way of living.......I think it's unhealthy. Certainly when the maintanance is poor, wich it usually is according many videos about these UK high rises I've seen. It could be good places if theres enough room for everybody and refurbished in a good way.......but the old style makes people sick. Remember Grenfell Tower and the Red Road Flats* (*especially in it's last days), irresponsible living conditions!

shocking the council just demolish these flats in glasgow rather than retro fitting them, but of course back handers and other council cons makes sure that dont happen. Wait, what? you want a view and a unique viewpoint of your own city? na , you need money for that, go live glasgow harbour 1500 a month, your a council peasent, you will be ground and road level only. i still live in high flats, and used to live in the red rd. The view point you get of the city is unique and disgrace they are turning that into an elite thing.

I loved these flats, they were my favourite buildings in the UK. The twin buildings combined with the brutalist design and height made them very cool and unique. They should have been renovated to remain the icons that they were. It's sad that these buildings are being demolished, and for what? so we can see another soulless glass building or a generic low rise brick tenement instead.

Eye sore fulla junkies! They were crumbling to fk as well! U ever been 20 odd floors up and u can see through concrete on a balcony! The best thing about these flats in total was the unique way they had to be dismantled from the top down. Due to a main road and close by flats on the footings! 15 million quid to take down two flats!

    • @delboy6364

@@tropicalpalmtree so you'd rather still have massive shit looking buildings fulla junkies instead of nice front and back door flats!? Your glass fronted buildings has a point. But that city centre! Glasgow lost plenty stunning architectural buildings years bk for m8 subway etc. Today the council would rather approve a glass box than do up a stunning building like my former primary school, golfhill primary school sums up all that stinks about any snp administration! 🇬🇧

These Flats looked much better from in the inside than the Red Road Flats, love those windows at every corner and the living-room was quite spacious. Must have been nice to live in back in the happy days
