Love, love, love your octopus mixed media bottle! Thank you for sharing your process and for the great tip about using a pane of glass to roll out those cute little legs. 💜
I love octopuses-- some of the most intelligent creatures on the planet-- capable of amazingly advanced problem- solving and reasoning... have sometimes been trained to trust us and interact, and even teach us bits of what they know... such amazing animals, and diverse in form!
I am absolutely fascinated by them. There was a documentary recently about someone who had an octopus in his hope. it really highlighted how clever these alien creatures are.
It was such a pleasure to watch you work on this amazing piece of art, I love how you explained everything in detail, it’s absolutely fantastic I love how it all came together ❤ So now I’m off to watch some more of your videos 😊
I am Northern and proud. First half of my life in Yorkshire and the second in Lancashire. Personally, I hate the sound of my own voice - but I think everyone does.
Loved the video. Just curious... is it necessary to use a bonding agent to keep the clay on the glass? Some say it has to be glued after cooking? Thank you for any info!
You can use a bonding agent but I wrapped the clay around the bottle in such a way that it physically holds on. It could be removed if you tried, but so far it’s held in place
love this!!! I am wanting to make one but... I am not clear what is keeping this sticking to the glass. Do you just have to keep it where it is never touched. Like you could never sell it and mail it as it would break off??? Keep up the great work.
The clay w I'll stick to the glass but is quite easy to remove. The shape of the piece holds it in place. I have made pieces that can be removed. I just made sure that two arms went around the neck, so it could just hook over the bottle.
Just found your cjannel!channel!! Awesome stuff... thanks for the tutorials... my question is WHEN did you bake the octopus? I didn't hear you mention, but the polymer clay you used said to bake??? I'm just getting into clay so I am confused.. please and thank you
Thank you for this video it's just the tutorial I needed, somme questions if you can help. I love the effect of mica powder where do you buy it. Also the gadget to extrude the clay where can it get one. Lastly to attach my octopus to a fiberglass model which glue would you recomend? Regards Eilish
Alyssa Seifert polymer clay doesn't really stick well to glass and can be easily removed. I just carefully lifted a leg away and used a self adhesive label that I had designed and printed.
Yes! As long as there's no lid on it and you start off with it in the oven cold. The only real exception may be glass with bubbles in it, as air expands as it gets warm and may break the glass. I have even baked bottles with labels on!
Hi I absolutely love your work. I’ve been trying to figure how to stick polymer clay to glass for a while can you help? what do you use or what’s the best solution and does the clay shrink on baking ?
Hi Beverley. Polymer clay doesn't naturally stick to glass so you would need to use a product such as bake & Bond or Fimo Liquid. If the polymer clay encapsulates the glass then you don't need anything. I don't use anything as the clay will stick to the bottle sufficiently until it's baked and I design it so the octopus 'hangs' off the bottle. Polymer clay doesn't shrink at all when baked. Hope this helps
This was so excellent! One question, with the powders, are you able to gently wipe it off with alcohol if you find dont like that colour? Also, awesome tip with the frame glass 😎
Hi Robin, I've never tried removing the mica powders but I think water would take it off. I always make a colour swatch of each powder on both black and white clay, so I know what colours to expect. If you look at my video on using mica powders with polymer clay, you'll see what I mean. I'm glad you enjoyed the video.
this is exactly what i have been looking for! i am altering a vintage camera, steampunk style, and wanted to make an octopus to cling to the side and to hold up a an old-fashioned radio-type tube. the camera has a plastic body so i am pretty sure i am not going to be able to bake it in the oven. maybe air dry clay? would you be so kind to list the colours you have used? i can't really afford to buy a big set of powders so it would be lovely to find the colours you used as they work together splendidly. thank you so much for the terrific video and such a calming voice!
lara hartley you could add wires inside the tentacles so it would stay in shape while baking, or make a mock up of the camera from card and masking tape and bake it on that, then transfer it to your real camera. People have baked polymer clay on plastic (Christmas baubles and pens etc) but it is trial and error. Polymer clay bakes at a relatively low temperature. Also there's the risk of fumes being given off by the plastic as its heated. You can buy relatively inexpensive sets of mica powders on eBay, which work out cheaper than buying individual colours. You can even use eye shadow. Let me know how you get on!
@@CurioByBSpokeDesigns you mentioned the mica powders must have a binder so i was concerned not all mica powders, such as the ones one can buy from china, would be ok. one person on aliexpress said there mica powders worked with resin, but would not work with clay. left me totally confused. :-)
@@CurioByBSpokeDesigns thanks so much I've been thinking of what clay to used and I can't figure out because there are so many choices and at the same time so many positive and negative reviews on amazon .Thanks so much ill take your word on this one and I will try it on wedding glasses .😊Thanks again
I print them on self adhesive matt paper and cut them out with a craft knife and just stick them on. (sometimes I have to carefully lift the legs away from the glass to slide the label behind).

wow! beautiful piece! thanks for sharing your process!
i really love this bottle your explanation is very clear too do you think i can follow and make one like yours with air dry clay ?
I don't see why not, although air dry clay doesn't hold detail as well and may crack.
Love this. So after baking does the clay bond to the glass. Or would it need gluing.
There's a light bond to the glass. I've never bothered gluing mine.

I love steampunk stuff! (I only cut my pizza into four pieces. sometimes six or eight)
I only cut mine in 4 slices, any more than that would be too much to eat...lol

I'm wondering if instead of FIMO gloss varnish, you could use Mod Podge?
I've heard that Mod Podge stays sticky. I have a video coming out soon where I test some alternatives to Fimo Gloss.

I bought the mica powders and the extruder on eBay. A good all purpose glue that will pretty much stick polymer clay to anything is E6000.
this is brilliant
Thank you!
This so good

I use Fimo Soft in Black, Perfect Pearls (and other generic Mica powders) and Fimo Gloss Glaze

So is this the same clay that stays soft for months without baking in oven? If not which one is it then
Yes, this is polymer clay and the brand I use is Fimo
this is truly magnificent!
Please put the brand of mica powder you used. I didn't catch the name. Thank you.
I used some Perfect Pearls but the rest were no name brand from ebay.
fascinating!!

marielle rosemond it really is down to personal preferences.
so you bake the whole bottle with the octopus on it to cure??
Yes, glass is perfectly safe at that temperature. Just make sure the bottle is open, not sealed
Can I find the instruction for attaching label after baking

I found it at a car boot sale, it contained bubble bath
I did one tonight. Not as good as yours.. but it was a blast.

how long would you say the legs were? i am now on my fourth attempt. aarrgghh.
On mine they were about 6 or 7 inches long - keep going, you'll get there
