We did this next case for them - to raise awareness for pancreatic cancer and for those courageously battling it. The Whipple procedure is performed for the treatment of some pancreatic tumors, and it is among the most complex and demanding surgeries in medicine, requiring 6-12 hours to complete 😨. This is a very simplified playdough version so my kid could follow the principles, but it still took us about 3x as long as a typical case.

I was proud my little guy maintained his attention span throughout the case, asking questions and keeping it light with his goofy jokes. He was also very happy to submit a big specimen for his little sister to examine - look out for part II!

If you have a spelling bee 🐝 champion at home, look for the three key reconstructive steps after the pancreatic tumor is removed along with the duodenum (the “pancreaticoduodenectomy”): the pancreaticojejunostomy, hepaticojejunostomy, and lastly, the duodenojejunostomy 😅
