I remember watching this as a kid. Later found out Ed told them not to sing the line “girl we couldn’t get much higher” but Jim did. Ed was so mad he never let them on again.
It's kind of left up to interpretation, but in 1967, the squares thought for sure, that it was a drug use reference, so Ed asked him to change the lyrics but Jim didn't. I always thought, it was ambiguous enough, just to leave it alone.
You seriously need to see Oliver Stone’s THE DOORS (1991), starring Val Kilmer, who literally sounds exactly like Jim and sings as Jim. It’s a very trippy movie.
Famously Jim Morrison sang the line, girl we couldn’t get much higher, against the wishes of the show’s producers. When told that they would never play the show again, Jim replied, we already did The Ed Sullivan Show, why would we come back. ✌️
So the story goes. Only Ray told that story and John and Robby went along with it as it is a good story. Ray never let the facts get in the way of a great story. The Doors did a lot of TV shows and never more than once. They did not want to be the "house band" for Ed Sullivan. They wanted to do Winters show and the Smother's Brothers. They also did not want to make trips to New York with all their equipment, engineers, and producer in tow. I am sure there is some truth to the story Ray told but I never seen anything to prove a ban. Ed's son in law lost his poopy and yelled some things. Sullivan would have had Satan on if it got ratings.
Whereas Mick compensated. .When ol' Ed asked him to sing "Lets Spend SOME TIME Together" instead of "Lets Spend The Night Together"...But during the performance, you can see Mick and Bill roll their eyes during the switch.

Jim Morrison was an incredible frontman. He was good looking, charismatic and had the vibe on stage that just made you watch him. This is an incredible song! Many bands were told that some lyrics or even dancing couldn't be played on tv at that time due to censors. The band was told not to say "Girl we couldn't get much higher" and he sang it anyway. They were banned from the Ed Sullivan show after that.
I’m part of the 80s generation, but I was 3 in 1967 when this was released. I remember it being played on the radio all the time. To me, when I think of The Doors, this is the song I think of most.
@wiltchamberlainisthegoat13 I would have been 6 years old. But yes, I also think of this song first when I think of them. There are other songs that I like better than this one, but this is definitely synonymous with the Doors.

Hmmm that is probably why Jagger in Canada said that he really liked their Prime Minister Trudeau and almost got booed off the stage lol! Not a real rebel.
When the Rolling Stones went on Ed Sullivan to perform "Let's Spend The Night Together", they were told that the title line was too risque for TV. Mick changed it up a little bit to "Let's Spend Some Time Together". During the live performance, he stuck with the "new" lyrics but his eye rolls let everyone know exactly what the song was about.
This is probably one of Jim's best live performances. Often at at concerts he was so drunk and/or high that he would show up late, forget lyrics, and ramble incoherently. There is another good one, I think at the Hollywood Bowl maybe? But in general, studio recordings are your best bet when listening to The Doors.

The Doors were banned from The Ed Sullivan Show, but not from TV entirely. There are clips of them performing songs live from their LP "The Soft Parade" on public television. Then they appeared on The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour performing "Touch Me" and "Wild Child" where they sang live with the instrumental backing mostly recorded, except for the sax solo on "Touch Me" which was live. The Smothers Brothers show (I watched every week) presented a lot of rock groups that you didn't see often elsewhere on TV, such as Jefferson Airplane, Steppenwolf, The First Edition, Donovan.....and a memorable ear-shattering performance by The Who. The Doors generally didn't go for TV dates at that time but they made an exception for the Smothers Brothers. (The Smothers show got censored and eventually cancelled by CBS .) Robby Kreiger was the main writer for the song. He said he wanted it to start with as many different chords as he could cram into that intro.
