This isn't correct, most of the Kamikaze stuff came later after Pearl Harbor and during the open warfare between the US and Japanese fleets, especially so as the Japanese fleets were under growing pressure as the war went worse for them. They didn't have enough pilots, they couldn't reliably carry out normal strikes while avoiding US anti-air (which was very good for the time period) and so they train pilots just enough and give them suicide missions for the glory of Japan/The Emperor. For Pearl Harbor specifically most of the pilots had the potential to make it back assuming they didn't die/get shot down during the mission. Japan also developed and used specialized "long lance" torpedoes for traditional torpedo bombing in shallow waters to great effect. Kamikaze attacks also don't do much against battleships without specialized suicide aircraft basically being guided missiles, instead the impromptu kamikazes were mostly effective against small ships and the wooden decks of aircraft carriers (most still had wooden flight decks during this time).

Asmon and techie, ww2 started for the us when Japan attacked Pearl Harbor. They intentionally waited to deliver their declaration of war until just after the Pearl Harbor attack as to not ruin the surprise. The goal was to take our aircraft carriers out of commission so we had no real naval power in the pacific. However by dumb luck none of our carriers were in pearl that day. They did NOT use kamikaze until close to the end of the war and the reason they started doing it was because they had no more trained pilots so instead of teaching them how to land they told them to just crash into our ships. After Pearl they tried to surprise us again at a place called Midway and again the goal was to hit our carriers, but we had broken most of their military code and intercepted transmissions that tipped us off about it. So the US set a trap for them, we position our carriers about 250mi north of Midway and got the planes off the island. We let them come in and start attacking Midway, at which point we had so many different squadrons of planes attacking their carrier group that they essentially couldn't keep up or launch/land any planes. So they lost 5 of their 6 carriers they sent and in one battle we turned the entire tide of the war. Japan was on the defensive for the remainder of the war from Midway onward. Still to this day it's the most decisive battle in naval history.

It's kind of hard to pin down how a Canadian feels about the USA as a collective due to being somewhat familiar with the differences between the 50 states, if you ask a Canadian how they feel about the states that neighbour their province you will receive a more positive answer than asking how they feel about the US as a whole. It also depends on where you live, e.g., people living in a rust belt/university city like London, Ontario are going to have a more negative view of the US (hit hardest by tariffs/students generally have very extreme political views) than people living in one of the suburb cities surrounding Toronto like Barrie, Ontario.

The main reason Japan went after Pearl Harbor is they were targeting the aircraft carriers, which posed the greatest risk/threat to them once they declared war, as the U.S. didn't do 1-way trip pilots so they would need them to effectively deploy in the Pacific.

You literally can't make it to adulthood without learning that information, whether its school, a movie, a random internet meme/post, news article, video game, a random conversation, etc. It's one of the biggest events if not the biggest in all of humanities history and it happened very recently and the country they live in was heavily involved in the conflict and it molded modern America. Not knowing the name of the second Chinese dynasty is excusable, not knowing the basic facts about ww2 is not excusable, its disgusting and shameful and deserves a spit in the face.
@@randyf25 Yeah the inconsistent quality of schools in the USA is probably the biggest factor, I swear WWII and the Holocaust are the most heavily taught but it's always so surprising to see that there are people around my age that are so clueless about it. Sometimes you get teachers that just hand out worksheets/homework and call it a day and sometimes you get those that actually care to engage with the class and teach! I always enjoyed history and english class cause I had some great teachers whose names I still remember lol
You also have to consider that these guys probably didn't pay a lick of attention in class and/or probably just didn't like history as a subject

I knew Tectone is not the brightest but here he definitely brought it to the next level ... You could literally see the disbelief in Asmon's face whenever he had to teach them some basic historic facts. And it's not about knowing or not knowing some trivia. It's about being ignorant about some fundamentals of our culture/life/society. WW2 also marks the point when the US became a real global power which shaped the current world. So especially as an American, you should know at least the very basics about it ...

In UFC it's an actual fighting sport where the goal is to knock the other opponent out. I'd argue there's more injuries in professional wrestling than UFC. A UFC fighter is yet to kill his whole family and himself due to concussions and steroids.
