About the friend thing about Otto... just remember that Subaru doesn't have any friends in the real worldl and how his trauma in the school. So someone saying that they are their friend is really something to him. He's so used not having friends, that he doens't even get Otto saying the word in relation to him.

It’s not just that Subaru (at this current point) only believes he should use his life to protect the people most important him, he hasn’t even considered that any of these characters share some sort of warmth towards him or would want to do something for him
Not to mention, how Subaru got friends as he grew up was by doing crazy antics and trying super hard just for his "friends" to eventually leave him. So having someone just claiming to be his friend from a few short moments with Otto where Subaru wasn't actively trying to impress him must seem like a very foreign/strange concept to him given his personal experience.
Glad someone said it. Just kept repeating to my self they don't get it during that scene rip ruined the moment supposed to be heartwarming and cute and completely ruined it.

Yeah sure, they have misunderstood that scene but they also don't hate him nearly as much as some people in the comments of these videos make it out to be. Come on, if they actually did as these people say they wouldn't feel bad for him in the tea party. Roshi even says he feels bad for him and "poor guy" here 24:10. If you wanna actually see someone hate on and trash talk a character without merit then check out Rob from RTTV's reactions to Hunter x Hunter hating on Killua,the 3 here aren't even half as bad as that..... You wouldn't cry over a character you hated, and Lupa clearly did cry there at the end of episode 8....

He only ever wins in the finals loop, we always see how pathetic he is. So people who aren’t used to anime with “loser” MCs will be more judgmental. It seems they like the show or they wouldn’t he continuing it.
I love Subaru btw one of my fav anime protags of all time. But he’s difficult to like at this point in the story. Each arc, Subaru becomes more and more reliable and likable and cool

@@fili0938 I would argue arc 1-4 Subaru is a loser. I mean that in an endearing way btw because most people are losers by definition. I don’t often win things or have things go my way, Im sure its the same for you. Especially true when you become an adult.
Arc 1-2 sets up Subaru to be sympathetic, arc 3 challenges his character and forces him to do what necessary to get what he wants. Arc 4 test Subarus self confidence and self worth, and trust of others. Each arc Subaru becomes less and less of a “loser”.
I also think most people WOULD be able to do this. Its like some spiderman shit, it doesn’t matter who had the power. Return by Death made Subaru become someone willing to risk his life. It gave him a chance, not just to survive. But save his friends, and changes himself for the better

The rabbits straight up ate their way up his ass and down his throat and met in his stomach, no joke... by far his worse death. And I’m pretty sure he had a seizure in the web or light novel after this death
He legit went insane because how the hell does the normal brain deal with or even rationalize the sensations of being EATEN ALIVE afterwards. His brain had a melt down and all he could do was pound his head into the ground in an attempt to distract himself from the insanity of the entire ordeal. That was until the Witch of Greed called him to the tea party, which thankfully restored his rationality instantly. If not for that he would have been left an invalid.
It wasn't a seizure. It was "as if" he was having a seizure.
The scariest thing is that there will be even worse deaths in later arcs of Re:Zero

Just a tip and all, but every single save point of Subaru will always be back in time enough for him to, at the very least, save himself from dying. So yeah, he wont ever be stuck in a completly hopeless situation.

“Otto f**ked him.” Not really, during their second first meeting Otto ran away in terror from Subaru, a stranger he had just met, who said the white whale was specifically trying to kill him, while the whale said god knows what to him. Wouldn’t you have done the same? Subaru. Doesn’t. Care.
What Subaru does do is try to do everything himself. He doesn’t really have friends so he’s forgotten he can rely on others (despite telling Rem to rely on others). From Otto perspective, Subaru saved him from death, bought his overstock that threatened to ruin him, offered to introduce him to the margrave, while he bantered with him and teased him like they were old friends. He was a good friend to Otto, but he never noticed until Otto said it.
I didnt even realize that Otto could hear/understand what the White Whale was saying 😨
Yeah from what I’ve heard the white wail spoke to Otto and it drove him insane , which is why he killed Subaru , because if you notice in moments of terror Otto tends to stay calm and focused
From what I remember Otto can talk to witchbeasts , but they normally only say stuff like “Die!” Or “I’ll kill you”
@@Cyrork especially since not only is the whale describing how it’s gonna eat them, the whale’s special ability is attacking your mind directly through its voice. Otto is naturally sensitive to noise attacks, so it def especially messed him up

She doesn’t actually refer or address puck as father but I think one time in her back story she said he was like a father figure or something but was this ever repeated again? Other than puck calling Emilia his daughter

Echidna is like a mother to Beatrice. Puck is like a father to Emilia. Spirits don’t have blood relatives, so this is like making a family for them.

Did you notice how Roswall changed his way of speaking when he was talking with Subaru and how he was controlling the discussion. Instead of pronouncing the words like he usually does he was completely serious. And about this friend thing, think about Subaru's backstory he didn't have any friends in the other world.
It sounds like you guys haven't watched the "frozen bond" ova - you guys should seriously consider watching it before you get too much further. You'll get less out of it if you do it the other way around.

The reason subaru was so desperate to get out of the library was because he didn't want rem's body to get butchered or defiled like a rag doll by Elsa.
And here's the horrifying part, he was planning to kill rem by his own hands by a knife and kill himself later. Just so Elsa wouldn't do anything to her body
If anyone who sees this wants to read how the rabbit scene was in the Web novel then here it is
Subaru: “A, rabbit?”
A little animal with two long ears and white, fluffy fur. With two characteristic red eyes, its mouth
jittered as it looked about its surroundings. Then, looking up at Subaru, it tilted its little head, and let
out a high-pitched squeal.
A small, teeny-tiny rabbit. It was about the size of Subaru’s fist and, at a glance, it was not that far from
the size of a hamster. But since its ears were as big as the rest of its body, the term “fits in your hand”
might be slightly misleading.
In a place where bugs, humans, and dragons all vanished without a trace, there was suddenly a rabbit.
Although it could be just one of the critters that lived in the forest, considering how Subaru hadn’t
encountered a single living creature up to this point, seeing it here was exceedingly strange.
Subaru: “Why is there a rabbit here... It... is a rabbit... right?”
With endless questions, Subaru looked over his surroundings, confused, trying to see if there were other
animals besides this rabbit that had wandered back into the Sanctuary. And, with no particular intention,
he reached out his hand towards the rabbit, hoping to confirm what it was, or perhaps just wanting to
pet its fur――
Subaru: “――――”
The next moment, Subaru’s entire left hand was detached from his wrist upwards.
Blood sprayed out from the ragged, sloppy wound, and green-blue veins dangled from the stump. Were
the thin, white strings tendons or nerves? Either way, it’s always something grotesque when human body
parts are destroyed―― And those, were his few seconds of escape from reality.
Pain of an entirely other dimension trashed at Subaru’s brain, and, suffocating from the agony, his body
collapsed to the ground. The branch that pierced his collarbone snapped in half upon impact,
transforming into shattering pain. Pain, pain, pain.
Subaru: “Ggha!? Aa,uaghaa! Aaauu, uuuuaaaghaaaAAAAA!!”
His thoughts turned white-hot.
It hurts. Every cell of his body was dominated by this emotion of pain and there was already no way to
register the reality of the agony as the thought occurred to him why it had to hurt so much and where it
came from and why was it happening to him and why it hurt so much and it hurts it hurts it hurts it hurts
it hurts it hurts it hurts it hurts――
Suffocating from sheer agony, blood gushed from Subaru’s wrist as he drove it into the ground, and, for
some reason, he bit into the earth, inexplicably gnawing at the puddle of mud. The bitter, asphyxiating
soil brought back a moment of mental clarity, and his eyes dashed as if searching for the cause, when he
saw the white furball at his feet―― The little animal’s white fur was speckled with dots of red, and its
tiny mouth was busy working away. Under its black nose, its cheeks were puffed up, twitching. And,
sticking out of its mouth, Subaru saw his left pinky finger.
Understood. Gotcha. What happened here? He got eaten. He got eaten. He just got eaten.
Subaru: “Gu, ghhfffuuaaaAAAAAA!!”
Comprehension and pain drove him into a scream bordering insanity, Subaru turned to face the rabbit.
His right arm was broken and immobile, and his left wrist was in the rabbit’s belly. There was nothing
he could do, but if he could just confirm its true form――
He felt something burning into his thigh. With the unamusing shock of sharp, merciless blades scraping
his flesh to the bone, he turned up the whites of his eyes as white foam gushed from the back of his
throat. If only he could lay down his head and faint, but the intensity of the agony had no intention of
releasing his consciousness.
Bubbling blood spilled from the corner of his lips, and he writhed like a fish on land. The fact that his
ears could still hear, must be both a miracle and a joke by a cruel God.
Like the rustle of lapping waves, the sound captured Subaru’s eardrums.
Little hops. Small, tiny bodies. The chain of overlapping chirps expanded to enormity, and even if his
vision were still present, he had no desire to count them.
And, in a moment, he was sincerely glad that the only thing left to him was his ears.
Simultaneously feeling the bites of feeding teeth over his whole body, now, through the tactile and
unmistakable pain, Subaru understood that he was being devoured by threats numbering in the hundreds.
He shrieked. And a surge pushed him onto his back as his throat trembled. Immediately, furry creatures
dived into his opened mouth. His tongue was torn to shreds, sharp teeth flashed across the depths of his
throat, ravaging everything from his esophagus to his stomach.
Inside, they collided with the others that had invaded from his rectum, and, as if descending into a
competition, they devoured his organs left and right, turning Natsuki Subaru into minced feed.
It was the unmistakable sensation of being alive while living creatures shredded him from within.Fear
had already left him. There was barely any more pain. He couldn’t understand why he was still conscious.
He was being eaten. He was being eaten. His left eye was gouged out. His ears were no longer there. His
organs had already been consumed, and now the skin of his face was being peeled off. A hole opened in
his skull, and teeth sank into his exposed, bulging brain――

I love reading this part of the light novel, lmao! my dude cnt get a break. that laugh of Otto's "we're friends" statement is deep guys, he just got killed and betrayed all around(locked up days in that dungeon cell) then out of nowhere he was saved by the most unexpected person and calls him a friend, a laugh from escaping borderline insanity.

Dude, Subaru's VA deserves all the respect in the world. He delivers 110% every single episode and you can FEEL it in the lines he's been given. Even after rewatching the series, it still hits like a truck whenever Subaru breaks because the VA puts his soul into the acting
Otto said "yuujin" which means friends, but Subaru heard "Eugene". Kinda hard to understand, if you don't know Japanese

If you look at Echidna’s “I know” written lines, it is the exact same color and font as the lines as Puck had with his contractor (before Emilia) in Frozen Bonds.

I completely agree that this was Kobayashi's (Subaru's VA) best performance yet. I was hoping you guys would notice just how AMAZINGLY well he performed during the Return by Death scene. Glad you did in the editor's notes.
It is so hard to be able to pull off realistically crying and on top of that, adding relief to it. Deceivingly hard. Just astounding how good he is, honestly. I dare say one of the best Male VA's in the anime industry.
