  • A recent archaeological dig in Greenford, West London, uncovered some remarkable primitive film footage of Bert Weedon in concert at the British Legion Club. Mr Weedon's orchestra comprised myself (bass), Cos (guitar), Pete (drums) and Steve (keyboards). After carbon-dating and counting the rings, scientists estimate that the event dates from around 1988.

Absolutely fabulous to see you and Bert sharing the stage Barry! What an honour it must have been! To think that the first piece of vinyl I ever held in my chubby little hand as my own was Bert Weedon's Ginchy, in 1961...

Hi Barry thank you for sharing this, very rare to find videos of Bert playing live but this must have been a great experience for you to play with him. Great show and was a pleasure to watch.
    Regards
    Dale

Great upload, thanks! Play in a Day” got me started back in ‘78. Watching this inspired me to buy a set of Bert Weedon style picks online….Pentagon Plectrums ;)

Thanks for posting...I have some Bert Weedon recordings here in Hollywood. I never knew what he looked like. He gets a lot out of his guitar (Guild?) without any effects.

He’s playing a Yamaha here, previously he had used Guild and also Hofner in the really early days. I agree, he has a wonderful clear tone and phrasing.

Outside of a few old records, I’ve never heard Bert’s playing
Yes…he’s not going for any displays of virtuoso speed, or clever tricks
The melodies here are relatively unadorned with flash, or effects
However, that belies Bert’s abilities as an arranger; he never hides behind scale runs or whammy bar histrionics.
Take for example I Just Called To Say I Love You-the way he subtly slips in and out of the notes to keep interest without compromising the melody or being repetitive
Also his encore of Hava Negila…it’s familiar enough that everyone can join in, has that exotic scale behind it, and ideal for gradually speeding up and showing off, without it becoming meaningless
Which is what the original does anyway! 😂
    A lesson for us all!
