4 month update: I bought this exact kit because of this video and Im still very happy with this purchase. I have my pi overclocked to 2.1 gigahertz and have a 128gb sd card filled with a couple thousand games and my pi never overheats. ETA prime thanks for your great videos! Anytime something new pi related comes out the first thing I do is check your UA-cam channel.

Needing a second Pi-4, I recently got the CanaKit 8GB starter set. Although it came with a cute little plastic case with a rather small 30mm fan, even with the nice heat sinks they provided didn't seem to cool it much at all. I upgraded to a GeekPi Ice-Tower cooler a couple of days later which cut the CPU temperature by over 40C - dropping the average lightly loaded temperatures from over 80C to slightly less than 40C! The other accessories that came with the CanaKit worked perfectly - but the cooling of the originally provided case should have been much better.

I like everything except the RGB (y'all probably consider that a plus). Just more wires I have to cut. But, if you consider Amazon's regular pricing on all that stuff to be "fair", then yeah, it's a (slight) bargain. I'd still have to pick up at least a 3.5A Argon PSU though, so there went my savings.

The kit looks nice! For those lucky folks with a micro center around, I’d recommend the kit I went with: aluminum case, 1x 40mm fan, 3mA power supply with on/off switch. I think the brand was micro connectors and it was $20. I liked this kit because I could choose the pi and micro SD card separately-I didn’t like that I had to buy a new hdmi cable/adaptor, though. I suppose if someone doesn’t want to bother shopping for every part, this labists kit is the way to go. Thanks for the video!

@@bhztufs Of course there is, you can just put the red on a GPIO pin and control it from a script instead of connecting it to 5V or 3.3V.

@@Bynming you definitely cannot do that, unless you want to fry your Raspberry Pi. The GPIO cannot source enough current

@@bhztufs Use the 5v rail for the fan and a transistor on GPIO to control the fan then, it's really not that complicated.

I got their 4GB kit for $100 Canadian Rupees, quite a steal from the normal Amazon price of $140. Don't care too much for the cheap-feeling case and noisy fan, but I have a fair few extra High-Pi cases laying around from Buyapi.ca kits. This 8GB kit has a different case that doesn't look much better, but has a much bigger heatsink.

what size are the fans, 20mm? I wonder if I could rig up dual noctua 20x10mm fans. Noctua are SUPER quiet even at higher RPM, but it would be a 3 pin so I need to figure out how to do that with the pi4 board.

I've been having a lot of trouble with the rpi4. I've been getting a bunch of screen tearing during games and menus and Kodi has been crashing a bit more than normal. I am debating returning mine. I don't know if this is normal or not for the Pi4.

    • @lander1591

The Graphics Processor Unit in the Pi4 is brand new and the drivers are still being written for it as it is being reverse engineered for open source. Eventually it will be good but for now it's still a little rough around the edges as some of the GPU tasks are still being performed by the CPU. If you want a more polished or better experience in the meantime I'd suggest trying out the 3B+ as it's drivers and firmware have had much more time to mature.

@@lander1591 Thank you! 😁👍 I have used every single PI before this. I still have my 3b+. I was just wondering why the experience wasn't seamless yet since everyone has been recommending the pi 4 but neglecting to mention that there is a bunch of screen tearing and why.

I literally bought a Labist Pi 4 kit 4 gig 2 weeks ago and it didn't come with the dual fan heat sink, so this must be new. Just like the Amazon reviews says, the fan that came with mine started off quiet but got super loud over a couple of days to the point where it was unusable. Can you update if the dual fans on your heatsink gets louder over 48 hours? Everything else in the kit was great, just that fan was really unusable.

Is it possible to make a dashcam out of a Raspberry Pi 4 8GB Kit? What is the maximum SD card capacity you could plug into one of these things?

  • @billfreeman5201

Not at that price. I would rather get an Odyssey X86 SBC and case that is not only more powerful but with way more expansion options, for a similar cost.
The whole concept of the Pi, being the low cost affordable solution has been lost and if the Pi foundation had done the job properly in the first place they would have issued it with appropriate cooling and with a case that would negate the need for the copious amounts of them that have come out.

I know this is an old video, but during this past Prime Day i bought what it seemed like this same kit, but it comes with a bag with 4 extra screws that are very long and hollow on the other side, they are like motherboard stanoffs but like an inch long. What are they used for? Oh, also, now it comes with 4 thermal pads instead of 3

  • @rhoakka

I think you placed one pad wrong. Regarding the manufacturer video (ua-cam.com/video/BLy_IVMjfe0/v-deo.html) it should be on the wifi module, so it would fit better in the recesses of the fan block.

I bought a labists starter kit for a pi 4B a couple years ago and I am trying to use it to convert an old space age tv into a deskpi, bascially. I have been trying to add an LED arcade button to it as an on/off switch and I used your tutorial for adding a power button to a 1,2, or 3, but it didn't work for me. I'm hoping that you can help me fix this issue?
