That doesn't look like a belt buckle. It looks like an identity disc. You can see the line where it's weakened to break in half, leaving half on the soldier for identification, and the other half to be sent to whoever was in charge of keeping records of casualties.
The belt buckle was how they found him, then they found the dog tag as we call them in America. Identity disc.
