    What a gift for you and your son to have this father-son trip recorded. My husband has been to Canada several times to fishing camps and tried to describe the beauty of the wilderness to me. I get it now. 😊

      Six years out from a bone marrow transplant for leukemia I know this to be very very true. Every day above dirt is a good day indeed. 😎😎😎

      Thank you. Yes, it was this canoe trip that made me decide to start filming any adventures I go on. A great way to remember them as well. My son has matured so much since this trip, we hope to do another one in the next year or two.

    Great job on the film Ryan! Steven will recount this story and maybe duplicate the trip with his son.

    What an awesome trip for you and your son. I live beside the north saskatchewan in Battleford and canoe it often. But here the scenery is not quite as nice and there is no rapids.

      Thank you! I always think very fondly of this trip, it was our first big one and such a success in so many ways. We will definitely do it again sometime in the next few years.

    Looks like an awesome trip! I am...or was planning to kayak Edmonton to North Battleford solo this June. By the scenery you guys had I might decide to do this stretch instead...

      You will not regret starting in Nordegg. A kayak would make it even more fun as you can hit the bigger rapids if you want. Let us know how your trip goes!

    Great trip! We've canoed Genessee to Devon a few times, but we want to start further upstream. This is a great look at the type of conditions we'll encounter. Thanks!
    I agree 100% about the beauty not being by accident.
    I ALWAYS take an anchor or tie off the canoe. Levels can fluctuate a foot over night. Bet you wont do that again. :)
    Did you find you were packed a little heavy with the coleman stove and lawn chairs?

    • @ParklandFilms
      @ParklandFilms  7 років тому +1

      Thanks Billy! Yes we definitely were more careful after the lost canoe incident. Normally one of us would pull it way out of the water, but we both walked away without thinking. Surprisingly, the stove and chairs were not a bother, the chairs kept the tent off the bottom of the canoe (dry) it was more the amount of clothes I brought that I would not do again. One pair of pants, shorts, couple of shirts is all I will take next time.

    Great film! My friends and I are doing Nordegg to Rocky this upcoming weekend. Would love to know your recommendations for campsites, what to expect, and if a two-day river float would be enough to cover the distance. Thanks!

    • @ParklandFilms
      @ParklandFilms  8 років тому

      Thank you! Sorry I didn't get to this sooner as you are probably at Rocky by now. Honestly, there are so many places to camp you won't have trouble finding any. I hope your trip went well. You can do it in two days, a bit tight though depending on how much paddling you do.

    Great video. Thank you for sharing your trip. I think you and you son have inspired a lot of people to give it a try. I have just started looking into paddling myself and I want to get the right canoe. What would you recommend in a canoe? Size, material made from etc. Thanks

    • @ParklandFilms
      @ParklandFilms  6 років тому

      Thanks for your kind words, I had no idea these films would impact so many people, I'm absolutely humbled. As for the size of a canoe, ours is 17 feet, a bit big but we can carry more equipment with two people. Could go three people, but then I wouldn't have the luxury of my coleman stove and other things haha. For two people, you can get away with a 14 or 15 foot. Material, for rivers you want something durable as you do scrape rocks sometimes, the plastic Coleman like we have is almost indestructable, but not a very agile canoe. Although we did ok with it. Really, I would recommend just buying a used canoe the first time around, if you don't like it, you can always sell it and get something that better suits you. Hope this helps.

    Great video! I'm excited for when my son is old enough to do some trips like this. Would love to get to that part of the country for some paddles! I'm out east in NL:) Did you film this with a go pro? You had some amazing shots.

    • @ParklandFilms
      @ParklandFilms  7 років тому

      Thank you! Good to hear from someone out east. If Alberta is too far, there are some great places in Ontario to take canoe trips as well. Lots of lake country, connected by rivers. Someday I will go out there for some paddling. I filmed all of this with my Samsung S5 phone. It was water resistant which was a must! The phone was wet for the whole trip. My GoPro went missing years ago but I have a replacement so my next canoe trip will have some more action shots!

    Edmonton Fire Rescue keeps warning people to stay out of that river. It kills so many people who try and swim across it or have a boating capsizing accident. The undercurrents are so powerful they can suck you under even in a life preserver and hold you down. Must be the stretch that runs by Edmonton.
