STATE OF MIND with MAURICE BENARD: RIDGE ALKONIS & ANDREW EUBANKS

  • Navy Lt. Ridge Alkonis served 537 days in a Japanese prison after he lost consciousness while driving, resulting in a car accident that left two Japanese citizens dead. Japanese authorities denied Ridge access to a translator or legal counsel resulting in a prison sentence that was much longer than if this incident had occurred in the United States.
Join me for a phenomenal conversation with Ridge and his best friend Andrew Eubanks, who along with Ridge's wife, Brittany, rallied to get him out of prison in a story that will leave you breathless.

Alkonis pled guilty! His exact words in court were "I felt my body weaken while I was turning at a large curve, which caused the car to drift within the lane, but I recovered before the car could drift out of the lane." He then said "I felt very weak and tired." Because he was so close to the destination he continued to drive until he lost consciousness and the accident occurred. He chose to drive while tired and it cost people their lives. Can you imagine losing a spouse and a mother because of this? It happened! It was a preventable accident that he paid the price for. He had to play by the same rules as everybody else in that country, especially as this happened when he was a civilian. I don't understand this public relations campaign to try and get people to believe that Alkonis is a victim. He's not. It makes a mockery of the people that lost their lives because of Alkonis' actions.

As an Army vet it was not hard to recognize the well spoken and tough exterior of other vets. It’s very hard to break us.These 2 are class acts who represent the military with class and dignity. Unfortunately Ridge made a costly mistake that landed him in a foreign prison. In my opinion his strong military mindset kept him alive. We were always warned before going overseas that we represented the U.S. and watch what we did because we would not like the consequences. Break protocol and expect to suffer dearly in the hands of that country. God bless these 2 comrades.

71G10 (MOS) National Guard Vet, thanking you guys (& yours) for your service 🤗

I also have to add that in the Army it was instilled in us that you never leave a man or woman behind. That can even be said with friends. You can’t tear the bond that you create with another service member. They become your family until the end of time. That’s what made this SOM unique and special. These 2 are bonded for life. Try breaking that bond. Won’t happen.

I've been choked up since October 7th. The whole thing was horrific but it started in 1948 . It displaced my grandparents with my 2-year-old mother. And they went back when the warriors over they stole her house.

As a veteran I want to point out the bond we all have with one another is something like no other. So, I am in awe of my brothers here. God Bless you both. Also, as a Master of Divinity graduate and a believer of God all my life, I want to point out how this bond of military / veteran brothers and sisters we all have reminds me of a couple of best friends in the Bible whom have been misconstrued for years and years… of David and Jonathan. Not only close due to being around Saul & Jonathan from a young adulthood, like family, but also on the battlefield together. They were truly like brothers, both familiarly and military / veteran brothers. So the closeness these two had is not to be looked at in a way many people today keep trying to blur lines of. I am not even remotely going into a manner of judgement, saying right or wrong, of others life choices today, but I am wanting to clear up how many keep trying to change the reality of the relationship between those brothers, David and Jonathan.
All that being said, I am in awe of the resilience of my brothers here. They are both the definition survivors and thrivers and over-comers. It is so wonderful to see their transparency, and know how much it can help others today (and for time to come).
    Blessing to all…

WOW a heartwarming ending to a horrific nightmare. With the love of God, family and friends Ridge made it through. Asking ourselves why gets us nowhere, we all are handed our lessons in life and Ridge was able to share with the world that with Christ living within us that there is hope! Maurice gave us yet another quality hour. ❤

    Great interview Maurice
    You have no idea
    How bad it is
How hard finding a doctor let alone the right dr
    Worse experience ever
With one particular dr in my area
    With anxiety depression
She ( dr ) said exercise it will go away 😔
Didnt even try to ask me questions of whats going on
Ill remind you this was supposedly a doctor
    She said
    Im not that kinda dr
I asked can you refer me
    Answer :
( ask your insurance company )
    Your on your own basically
If you say you have depression they jack up the premiums
    I appreciate your content
Try not to ever miss the show

That is an incredible story ,and unbelievable that an American Officer had basically no rights. It says to me even though we as Americans complain about our country we're pretty damn lucky. Andrews story is my story to a T anxiety depression and claustrophobia blindsided me out of nowhere. And my first medication almost killed me it was so bad and made me so much worse. But like him a new medication worked almost immediately and saved me... THIS WAS THE BEST STATE OF MIND!!!

Massage therapy can be a great way to treat the symptoms of anxiety. Of course people need to get help from other mental health professionals, but it reduces the hormones related to the fight or flight response, and increases seritonin levels. Take care of yourselves. ❤

First, the audio was perfect and finally able to follow the story. Thx for fixing it.
Maurice, great story but leaves basic questions...
Was Ridge honorably discharged? Was the cause of his blackout determined? How was his family supported in Japan while he was in prison?
    Still on military base?
Are there ongoing legal processes not allowing these issues discussed?
We'd like to know his current health, aside from mental health, which was addressed.
God bless these two examples of real men and true friends. Refreshing in today's world.
Thanks for this Mo. Upsetting but informative.
