instead of cutting off the extra tape end, turn it under and stick it to the table. the bezels won't move around as much. these are beautiful! another tip- cap the UV resin and put it upside down in a dixie cup and you'll have fewer bubbles.
Awesome steam punk bezels, Claire! Beautiful! ❤😊👍 This type of project was one of my first resin projects, ever. I felt so successful. 😁💕 I've made tiny seascapes in some, with sand and tiny shells. Making white waves is a b*tch, though. I still can't get lacing to save my life! TIPS: 1) To keep the tape from buckling so much, it can help to give that first layer 2 (or even 3) 30-second blasts and cool off (absolute MUST) *between* each 30-second interval. THEN, switch to 60 seconds, cool off; and then 60-90 seconds if it needs more hardening. Just depends on how deep it is and if there's coloring in it. Part of UV resin's character is to heat super quickly, and it can even warp cheap molds. I've learned (the really hard way) to slow cure that first layer! 2) Doming the back enhances the magnification, even at the front. You wouldn't think it would, but it does. 3) If you want to use epoxy resin, it WILL seep through even with the tape. SO...use a tiny brush and just put a line of UV resin around the inside edge and cure it first. 4) The deeper bezels can actually hold enough resin to make an adorable mini bloom! Just need to make sure the resin has reached 32-35°C before pouring. The white will need to be somewhat translucent so it won't sink and make blobs.
So excited that you did this-I’m even later to the party than you are! I’m going to do something similar with an open bezel and a 1983 quarter (and maybe a key or cog) for my 40th high school reunion this summer. 👵🏼
@@SkitchBean_aka_Christine_E Thanks! I intend to-but not in the same way we did at our 10th. 😂 I’d like to think it’s maturity, but mainly it’s just that I’m tired by 11:30.
Cute project! I have a tip for you that will prevent those bubbles from pouring out when you use UV resin. If you store your UV resin bottle upside down while you're working with it, then tap it several times it helps the bubbles to rise away from the nozzle. I keep mine nozzle side down in an old coffee mug with a paper towel folded at the bottom. Always tap it onto a clean paper towel and don't even flip it right side up to take off the cap. That'll keep most, if not all of those bubbles out of the way. And just a tip for the environment- be sure to cure both paper towels if you have any wet resin left when you're done with your project for the day. You might even have enough clean area to continue using that same paper towel again. Cure them even if you're just throwing the paper towels away.
Yes it is normal for the green tape to pucker up like that, due to the heat of the resin when curing. Another great video Claire. I do luv a good old steampunk style myself. Thanks for all the inspiration too as I finally got round to uploading my own video a couple days ago. You and a lot of the other resin artists made me want to share my art too. Thanks again and all the best, Diane, UK xx
These are so fricking cool I was literally thinking pocket watch just as you said 😂 but seriously imagine filling an empty pocket watch 😍😍 loved this so much ❤❤
I use a variety of the gears in Dachshund molds with resin and copper flakes or a bronze back ground and I’ll also add a bee decal on top coated with UV resin and then I have “steampunk” Dachshunds..
yes its normal for the tape to sometimes fold a bit because the uv resin does heat up a bit when curing. as long as you have a good base layer and bezel is firm to the tape everything will work out fine. you should also try paper backgrounds behind those cogs or even bits left over from a paint pour. just make sure to have your base layer cured as you did here and your are going to love it. Those came out amazing.
❤ Ooh, these are beautiful, Claire. I worry about UV resin not curing properly on the opposite side, so I always turn things round and cure again. I always get a little excited feeling in my chest when I see your videos. 🎉 xxx
Uv resin shrinks as it cures, thus the wrinkling of the tape. As you found out, nothing to worry about. I agree with Apple Neil. The sticky squares work great. One other suggestion for the future would be to also dome the back, as this way you'll have a double sided beauty. And they are beauties! I love your work, your warm funny nature, and all your projects.❤❤❤
Wow! That turned out beautifully and w/o a single problem on your first try! How many things can any of us say that about? Anyway I just really love your teaching style, & I can hardly wait to try duplicating Your results on my own. You got me all jazzed up!❤😊
These turned out so pretty! I have these but haven’t done anything with them. I just ordered the little clocks and will try these. Thank you, Claire! 😍
Hi Claire love these so much 😍, looking forward to the next one with the washi tape 🎉, i used your code and placed an order with temu 🥰 cant wait for it so excited 💃💃💃 ❤❤❤ xxx
Beautiful work as always!! I hate UV resin with a passion, bad experience using it when first starting out in the resin world, the lamps that come with the kits never cure it without leaving a gross sticky residue (I've learned a stronger UV lamp is required). Been using epoxy resin since, will try this using fast cure epoxy resin for sure
These are gorgeous! Ive seen on another video someone actually folded over the end of the tape so that it makes a little flap to move it around without sticking to you. And i do like to work on a clear work mat (ive got a glass sort of tray) so that i can grab my uv hand torch and just give them a blast underneath without turning them. ❤
Like you I have just started UV resin after epoxy resin as too hot here for epoxy resin. If you put them on a mirror into the lamp you don't need to do the back. Even though UV resin is quick and easy I am still hesitant about making earrings. While those gear ones are interesting will they sell. Maybe I am getting too old lol
These are lovely. If you make any more open bezels, you could try using a 'sticky square' of cured silicone instead of the tape. I got the idea from Mini Scenes (have i remembered the name, right? Apologies if i haven't) and they work great, plus they are reusable. Look forward to seeing what else you create x
I am going to be doing this in the next couple of weeks , for my son I will be makeing keepsakes for his family ,they recently lost the there dog she was only 6 year old bless her I will be using some of her ashes 😭❤❤❤
I've used the open bezels, to make keyrings and bookmarks, because I don't trust the bezels to be nickel free, but I love making them. I usually go overboard with what I put in to the bezels, so my results are nowhere near as sleek and amazing as these, though.
You can do these in sterling silver and gold wire. That takes the nickel out of the way. They’re quite easy to make in any of the precious metal wires. ❤
@@LostSiren13 True. I have considered making them from sterling silver, which I use to make jewellery all the time. Making handmade bezels from scratch would require me asking for a way higher price than what I ask for a bezel like these, though, and I'd need to be sure the resin part is durable enough to stand the test of time - as I don't like selling silver jewellery which only lasts for a year or less. I should probably make some test pieces with silver and wear them for a few months to see how they hold up.
@@Leena79 I wrap mine around a ring sizer and it’s pretty fast. Have even twisted the wire and that looks pretty also. I just have too many friends that have metal allergies including myself so that’s why I’ve made mine for decades now. Still have the first pair of earrings I made when 16. 73 now and they still look like new. 😊
@@LostSiren13 I know silver holds time well, I just don't know if the resin does. I make jewellery with gemstones and silver (professionally), but I've been afraid of the resin wearing out. I'm especially sceptical of UV resin. I'll need to start experimenting, clearly.😊
