I try not to get emotionally attached to people I don't personally know, but Michael's unexpected death hit me hard. He truly was a paragon of political conviction. Tuned in from Lagos, Nigeria. Listening to these two individuals just cut my intellectual deficit by a whole lot! Thanks TMBS for putting this together.
Who remembers Micheal talking about the left missing and needing spirituality? He spoke of this just weeks before his passing, I’ll never forget. I’m getting emotional just thinking about it.
I personally struggle with the notion. I am a person of the world, and it is only the world that matters to me. People are of the world, so to me they matter for being of the world. I don't subscribe to any notion of religiosity, and only see how it holds our understanding of the world and each other back. I understand what Michael meant, to a degree, but I think its a dangerous notion to rehabilitate religious thought in such a manner. Its hard for me to reconcile "spirituality" with "reality" because I find them diametrically opposed. That spirituality is an attempt to except the world, rather than accept the world. I think the phrasing could be more precisely worded as bring an emotional element back to the left. To teach us the importance of love, of anger, of kindness, of need, of want, of happiness, of community, togetherness, *feeling*. I think it was this "Leftism is the correct decision and here are the economic facts of why" mentality that caused us to lose this element of what people confuse for "spirituality." The "left" version of Christianity is a denial of Christianity as a root. A misunderstanding of it. A corruption of a corruption of a corruption. I think for this reason we should leave it behind. It is a weight, and an easily exploitable one. I have similar views of Islam and Judaism. I think rehabilitating them is dangerous, because "revivals" of the older, more traditionalist versions can re-emerge, and we have seen it happen time and time again. What religion has that the left left behind is an emotional interpretation and motivation of politics. Its important that people not just know the theory, but *feel* the theory. Experience it not just in a way that makes them understand it, but in a way that makes us angry that our fellow man is oppressed. A way that makes us feel the love for one another that makes us comrades, siblings, family in the struggle. A way that presents us as being human in all ways, not just the way that makes us look "smart."
@Sombre Cynic he talked about it often before his passing. I believe he mentioned it in the panel with him and cornel west at the college, and many times in podcasts. He started to speak of it often before his passing. The only instance I can confirmatively point you towards was after his passing, his sister spoke of this in the first video they did. I’m literally getting chills thinking about it. He talked about how spirituality gives people a sense hope and greater importance. Whether you believe there’s more to life than this, it’s vital to understand that we’re spiritual beings none the less. The broader left is exhausted with religious fundamentalists, that we often dismiss spirituality all together. We don’t know what comes after this life, no more than the next guy, and we should always keep this in mind. While we can condemn religious radicals, we have to understand that we don’t have any more answers than the next guy. My brother and I developed many of our foundational perspectives about philosophy, politics, and good faith debate/humor simply by watching Micheal run his show and co-host Sam's. I will always remember his contributions to my life - he helped me understand the world in a succinct way and to be critical about it when other people wouldn't or couldn't teach that to me (and my brother). I am extremely happy to watch his mission continue on TMBS and through the projects of his many longtime listeners who have no doubt been inspired by his dedication to critical thought and leftist politics and ideals. Micheal may no longer be with us, but in my mind and my heart he lives on as a truly unique contributor.
This was a great talk. I really hope Michael’s viewpoints on cosmopolitan (Brooksian) socialism gains more traction in leftist and broader culture. I also hope Michael’s family/friends release more of Michael’s writings. I think his admirers would really appreciate that because “Against the Web” was a great read.

Oh, my goodness. You guys really are taking up the reins and continuing the work of Michael, ironically, in honor of Michael. When I saw the image of Zizek and West together, I thought 'it must just be a little compilation showing them side by side in different videos'. But, no, I was wrong, thankfully so, because these two together is a treat that is hard to come up with in my own limited imagination. I'm wondering if I'm alone or completely wrong in this, but I think Zizek's Christian atheism and Cornel's own Christianity can go very well together hand in hand.

I can imagine Michael Laughing histerically at the way Zizek goes off on his signature winding passionate, insightful, irrepressible tangents in this, what is suppossed to be a tribute to Michaels legacy. Thats what i remember most about Michael, he was truly self-aware, he never let his ego, (or anyone elses) dominate the conversation. He could genuinely laugh at himself with compassion. Truely, a vessel of Buddha nature. May we all find such peace of mind and clarity of purpose in our struggle against this Daemonic system.

Hearing Dr. West’s voice brought the biggest smile to my face, and he had me in tears moments later when he mentioned Michael. We lost someone so important.
This is amazing. Michael’s legacy lives on
It's great to see! Michael's soul doing great 👍
Kali purged him out of this world 🌎 this world was too harsh for he's tender soul! Be free Michael! We sending to you waves of unconditional Love ❤ ♥ 💙 💕 ✨
This right here is grace. Love and peace brothers and sisters ❤️❤️
My heroes together!
Love to Michael and his family. Still can't believe it
My brother and I developed many of our foundational perspectives about philosophy, politics, and good faith debate/humor simply by watching Micheal run his show and co-host Sam's.
Rest in power Brother Michael. Much love for comrades Cornel and Zizek as well.
Thanks Lisha and Russel for bringing us Slavoj and Cornel!
God damn this makes me miss Michael so much.
Wow! Engaged and important diskussion on so many levels. Trancendent almost. Beautiful.
RIP Michael. I didn't know him but I still think about him often.
This is the most beautiful and heartbreaking conversation I've ever seen. You're still here, Michael
Me and Michael are close to the same age, and he is one of those guys that makes me feel guilty for still being alive. Such a bright star from our generation, he is truly missed!
I must say I never heard of Cornel West, but I'm so glad I did. I absolutely find him sympathetic and the stuff he says is also amazing to listen to! zizek on his usual best
I don't know whether I feel better or worse when I listen to these 2. Better that the knowledge and insight and understanding so obviously exists, but worse that it doesn't break through
Oh, my goodness.
I agree thoroughly, this was a blessing to listen to
Can you imagine these two starting a podcast together 🤤 my heart would explode
Fuuuuck this was heavy.
It's amazing to see Brooks recognized by such political powerhouses.
Recently got the time to really dig into TMBS' work. Became a patron and going through the postgames and illicit history now. It's not going to bring Michael back but I recommend anybody looking to learn and get inspired to pledge if they're able.
Tears of sadness and joy, and gratitude. Thank you TMBS ,
This is ecstasy for my mind. I sadly didn't know about Michael Brooks but I think this is a good gateway to go down the rabbit hole of what heaven he left heheh. May he rest in peace.
Michael Brooks Forever
I can imagine Michael Laughing histerically at the way Zizek goes off on his signature winding passionate, insightful, irrepressible tangents in this, what is suppossed to be a tribute to Michaels legacy. Thats what i remember most about Michael, he was truly self-aware, he never let his ego, (or anyone elses) dominate the conversation. He could genuinely laugh at himself with compassion. Truely, a vessel of Buddha nature. May we all find such peace of mind and clarity of purpose in our struggle against this Daemonic system.
Just hearing the intro made me cry like really hard. Ive never had a parasocial relationship that actjally bothered me like when michael brooks died. I think about him almost daily
I CRY EVERY TIME AS WELL
I WILL MEET HIM IN THE AFTERLIFE
LOVE FROM IRAN.....
Same, comrade
PLZ DONT EVER STOP YOUR GREAT WORK AND NEVER CHANGE THE NAME AND DO THESE TRIBUTES TO MICHEAL OFTEN
IM FROM IRAN
THIS IS THE RANGE OF HIS IMPACT
I STILL WATCH HIS OLD VIDEOS AND CRY EVERY TIME
thank u so much the organizer .
Just an amazing event, will have to rewatch several times - Michael Brooks still making a path for us all
In memoriam Michael
Meeting Zizek and/or Brother West is the new #1 on my bucket list.
BRAVO Lisha!!!! and the lazy drummer Brother Russell!!!
So
Much love going out to Michaels family and supporters 🙏🏽
This was an amazing discussion by my 2 hero’s. It’s a pleasure to hear them speak individually, but together it was the best music, just amazing. Thank you Micheal Brooks (RIP) only you could have made this possible
also worth noting, I am glad to see zizek in such good spirits and health :) with barely any ticks. the comfortability of the conversation probably helps a lot
I may not have been able to find out about these 2 great thinkers without Michael. Thank you so much Michael
Excellent.
Rest in power Michael Brooks.
This discussion makes up for 2020. Thank you TMBS. Michael Brooks, you left but you're still here.
Cornell West is best when he gets on a tear about jazz and blues. Its a nice talk.
Hell yes guys
This made me smile the whole time I listened, thank you so much for this.
dr Cornel calling everyone brother is so pure and beautiful
He is, to me, the very best human being alive
"I call thee, all citizens of the world, governed by justice;
thy constitution of love and solidarity.
Adorn thyselves with ears that you may hear songs soaked in suffering,
therin the space of thy music summon voices, and call the world to listen."
What a great conversation. I still think about Michael all the time.
This was such a great discussion! Two intellectual giants in candid conversation genuinely enjoying each other's perspectives. What a treat.
I love this
Michael would love this.
This is for repeat watching till its memorised. And ultimate thanks goes to Michael.
Words cannot express my admiration, love and respect for these two men
This is a great idea! Thanks and Michael would be approving of continuing to bring people together to spread the love and planning and information- ❤✌😎
Left is best, babe 😘🥰💪
At least Russell became a brother to Zizek at the end.
My chocolate brother West has that ability 🥰
@@jontraz5993 I've never seen Zizek so respectfull and well behaved. You're right!Cornel disarms with his love & intelect, even "dirty perverts"like Zizek. One must be an idiot or evil person,to disrespect Cornel.
@@josiplilic3384 You are so correct, Josip! Cornel West is my biggest inspiration in my strife to become a better person. He is so full of love it's ridiculous. I want that. Brother West is my goddamn spirit animal!
@@jontraz5993 SAME HERE!
That intro music is soothing and bittersweet.
This is such a great idea ! This panel discussions are and will be true tribute to Michael work and vision ! Big hug and support from Belgrade, Serbia !
Absolutely a most timely discussion! Love it
I went to a show in Brooklyn with Kyle Kulinski, Krystal Ball, and Michael. He was s funny, did a spot-on impression of Chis Matthews. When I was waiting in line to get my book signed at the end, Michael walked riht by me after Kyle. Was just a foot away. This was the last Friday night before the shutdown. Can't believe I got to see him up close. So lucky to have known about him
Great talk. Rest easy MB
Thumbs up. Mr. West is a national treasure.
Excellent discussion, thank you.
Awesome, thank you for this, I'm excited! Rest in Power Michael ✊🖤
The situation is excellent.
Amazing!!!!
THIS IS AMAZING!! THANK YOU!
i truly admire both them and it was wonderful to watch them pay tribute to michael
We love you Michael
Two maestros of the 21st century.
Thank You All for an excellent show. Michael is missed very much. Lisha you are doing a wonderful job carrying on his work.
I look forward to the next one.
I don't know why seeing a convo between these two makes me so happy.
Such a great way to honor MJB’s legacy 🤍
Wow that was really powerful! Have to say one of my all-time favorite bits by both West and Zizek!
I saw Slavoj last year in a grocery shop. He was asking the store clerks if they knew where he could find a mail box.
It was bizzare seeing a UA-cam superstart in person.
In slovenia?
@@sashes375 We renamed our country from Slovenia to... Melaniastan.
Awesome conversation!!
Slavoj Zizek is the best Uncle i have no matter how pretend such a relation is! Uncle Slavoj is always welcome in my home! I mean, so is Cornel West to be sure! Two people who I know without ever even having met them would probably be nothing short of amazing to meet. Truly the eccentric comrades will inherit the earth (too), in bits and pieces, here and there, though! Nice nice with this double awesome guest line-up and a hell of a tribute! =D
Uncle Slavoj is a fast talker, you know? Even at -0.6x playback speed! =O
He talks how my stream of consciousness often flows.
This is so lovely to see. This has been such a tragic year for so many reasons. Losing Micheal was a massive blow to the left in America. It was also a massive blow to many in the U.K. who followed his work and resonated with his message.
I just hope people on the left learn from the main thrust of micheals work - the left needs to think more strategically, it needs to get serious about power, be ruthless with systems and kind to people.
Great thinker taken from us just as he was really coming into his own.
Peace x
