      Take a look at the island on Google earth. That's about the only flat spot on the whole island.
      I've seen planes come in from the other direction depending on winds. Much more sedate landing that way.
      Maybe I should upload that clip I took in 2017.

      @@ellmatic I uploaded it earlier, it's in my profile. Pretty boring cellphonevideo, but it proves I was there.
      Search UA-camfor St Barts landing and you will find a bunch of vids. It's pretty impressive to see them put in forward stick and dive down the hill to the runway. Sometimes they barely clear the traffic at the top of the hill.
      I definitely recommend a visit. It's a really neat island. We only did a day trip over from St Martin, but I would have loved to have spent more time on the beaches there. It's a small, very rich island, lots of yachts and high end stores in Gustavia. But they let The Poors like me in to look around too..
      I've seen people just hanging out at on the side of the traffic circle at the top of the hill watching the planes land. Its pretty laid back there, seems like you can kind of do what you want. I guess the locals just expect tourists to do tourist stuff and don't worry too much about it.

If I were ever to get a twin-engine all-purpose turboprop I would seriously consider a Twin Otter.     • @thefreedomguyuk
      @thefreedomguyuk 4 роки тому +9

      @@andyowens5494 That is a very limited gain you are talking about. Faults rarely occur within the actual wiring harness, but in the connectors. Also, the wiring doesn't run straight from the controls to the engine, it does pass through the ECU. So not really any difference there.
      Also, having other controls than the fuel panel and possibly Fasten Seat Belts overhead is a travesty. It does cause unnecessary distraction.
      You ideally want all essential controls within the same vector of your field of vision.
      Even more, when getting older and needing your reading glasses when flying. That upper right/left sector falls outside the bi/tri-focal field of your glasses, so you can't see anything at all. (Yes, this IS an issue for +55 flyers....)
      Basically, throttles, trim (and even flaps) have nothing to do overhead!
      Of course, this point become moot when +55, because, that's the point in life where you can't be bothered fiddling with the throttles on approach 😉

    Were those stall warnings on the landing? Was that from flaring so hard after practically rolling the landing gear down that hill?

    • @SophiaAphrodite

      AS quickly as the plane stopped my guess is stall speed warning.

    • @DoubleMonoLR
      @DoubleMonoLR 2 роки тому +1

      It seemed to me like there was a small bounce, so presumably when the plane detects the plane is off the ground(little or no pressure on the landing gear) it thinks it's flying, so sounds the stall warning.

    Fantastic island, we anchored on the opposite side and hiked over to the intersection you see at the top of the mountain. The runway is not flat at the entrance and if you overrun your on the beach or a few feet more you are feet wet. Watched several landings and takeoffs over the few days we were visiting.

    Bear in mind that some of the people commenting about propellers in the cockpit may not speak or write English as their first language. That would explain why they refer to fans as propellers. Just a thought.

      I think some people just cannot resist the desire to make jokes. The first few seconds of this video, I was not yet aware that it is really a propeller plane, but I saw the fans in the cockpit and immediately thought jokingly: "it's a propeller plane." After a few more seconds of sound of the video I noticed it's a turboprop. Before that, I supposed it's a Boeing 737, but they probably cannot land there, and they don't have the throttle on the ceiling.

    Better than some smaller planes that have no fans or air con.... Infact, this aircraft is a legendary plane that was well designed to land at nearly all impossible rough terrain air ports or air stripe and so on... Most of its crashes are mainly on pilot errors or bad weather. I don't see much on technical related accidents with this plane. İ love DHC 6 air craft.
