My father left the navy in the middle of his 2nd enlistment to help take care of his younger siblings when his mother died (his father died when he was 2). He worked on the docks, as a UPS driver, and later a janitor who went pretty high up in the union. He only got a couple of classes in at a junior college, but usually had 2 to 3 jobs to help raise my sister and I and our 3 half siblings who had been abandoned by their deadbeat college educated engineer father. Dad read constantly, studied history passionately, and was one of the smartest guys I ever met. It always ticked me off when college educated people of clearly average IQ would put him down.

@@chooch1995 Many people do learn and accomplish when they have higher education. Street smarts can be good, no education, but experience can be good, but education is also good.
Unfortunately, many of the educators have been sorely lacking, so they cannot impart the necessary information for students to grow and learn.
For example, one definitely needs an education to be a surgeon. Or a pilot etc.
So we must not knock good education, we have to start insisting on better teachers. Not woke, not teachers only caring about social justice, not teachers who listened to woke nonsense. But back to basics reading, writing, arithmetic, science and REAL history, not the trumped up wanna be history.
Anyway, I do agree, that certificate can mean nothing, or it can mean a lot.

I jut fell into heavy equipment repair because I liked it. It also started at higher pay for a newbie. As far as for the young people, trade schools are cheaper than college. Learn diesel engine repair/rebuild. There is money there and less competition these days as well. Diesel mechanics always earn more. I worked on dozers, panscrapers, things like that. You just have find what you enjoy fixing or making. Trade schools are important. A lot of community colleges have classes where you can learn this stuff too.

I have been a stylist for 28 years. Bought my first home at the age of 25. I can assure you it’s a great career if you are willing to bust your butt to put the time in and get a solid clientele. It’s a lot of nights and weekends when you are young. Which is the downside of the career. I don’t believe AI or robots will ever take over this career. A robot can not offer a personal relationship with a professional. During the Great Recession it wasn’t easy, however it wasn’t easy for anyone. There were no layoffs in my industry that I’m aware of. I wouldn’t change my career choice for anything. It has done me well. It’s a year or less of school and you can still go to college if need be. At the very least you will have a good paying job.

The first learns from the Craftsman the latter can create for himself and others that which hasn’t been created before. A Craftsman is the result of an apprentice becoming the artist. Take a pumpkin or hard squash (NOT spaghetti)
Cut in half and scrape out the gross bits in the middle
Take a sharp knife and remove the hard outer hull
Cut up in chunks the size of a nickel
Cut up onion(s) to slices then halve down the middle
Place both on a cookie sheet
Drizzle on vegetable oil or beef tallow cut in small bits. The pioneers used lard
    Drizzle on maple syrup
Stir it up to coat all pieces with fat and syrup
    salt and pepper to taste
Bake until onions are caramelized and squash is soft when poked with a fork but it's even better when it starts to caramelize too. The higher the oven temp the more often you stir.

True. And AI doesn’t need to “write Shakespeare” or make Kubrick or Hitchcock level films in order to be profitable. The vast majority of writing & cinema isn’t on that level

5:05 Ben is wrong about AI… it is not just an “imitator”. People are not concerned nearly as much as they should be… but this evolution in our species is inevitable. The only way we will ever become an interplanetary and eventually intergalactic species is to evolve from being a carbon based species to a silicon based one, barring some miracle of nature.

At the heart of all creativity is exactly that...HEART. AI will never have heart. It might be smart and be able to create or recreate individuals or write a script, but it's the chemistry and connection between individual personalities that allow us express ourselves in unique unpredictable ways. There is a lot of improvisation in tv/ film, based on being in the moment and in relationship to other cast members and crew. Also a lot of mistakes and accidents that actors have also make it into the final cut because it benefits the character or plot in someway. This need for AI to be perfect will take the fun out of everything. The movie the Princess Bride is a great example. Billy Crystal was told to improvise and wasn't given any lines. The chemistry and play between him and the crew created one of the most iconic characters and he was only in the movie for 5 minutes. AI will never measure up to talent like that.

Affleck is correct in his assessment of AI limitations but what he doesn’t understand is that already in film and music a pall pf mediocrity is being accepted because less and less artful work is being produced to highlight the difference. His beloved DEI has made sure of that by robbing art in film of its merit.

Before that same incident, I actually liked a handful of his movies. Since then, I haven't watched any of his works. (My own little boycott). My point being, and it's safe to say, I am not a fan of Ben. That being said, his statement, "Craftsmen know how to work, Artist know when to stop." I find extremely philosophical, enlighten, insightful, and profound. Very deep if you think about it.

In the early 90s I took a communication class at a local college. It was absolutely amazing, and the teacher was fantastic. He introduced a book to us,
the hypothesis of which was that robots and AI are not only going to be introduced into society but are actually the next level of human evolution. I really cannot remember the name of the book or the author. 30 years later, though, I am thinking this might become more of a theory than a hypothesis.

I'm not sure AI would have a problem with the start stop concept... it would just create patterns from the current library of movies (millions) measured against what is award winning and thus the pattern of what works. That's all AI is... making patterns and then testing those patterns against outcomes. And it can do it in fractions of a second. The more AI grows, the better its patters and measures become.
