The only reason May is bottom is Johnson , Truss & Sunak weren't included . For me Harold Wilson rates highly for keeping us out of Vietnam . Blair was progressive and a good leader ,but lost all credibility with the Iraq war , Brown was probably better but detailed by the financial crash shortly after taking over . I think Attlee is unlikely to be replaced being responsible for introducing the NHS and many other social benefits .Churchill was a great war leader , but people wanted a better society for all their wartime sacrifices . Thatcher is liked and hated , as a World leader she stood up for Britain , but also allowed traditional industries to fail causing thousands to lose jobs and many places are economic wastelands to this day .
It is an oddity the political colours are reversed in the US , red is the Labour party colour , as the traditional socialist party and even Americans described communist and left wing governments as ' reds ' . The Conservatives have always been blue .
Glad to see another Wilson enjoyer haha, very underrated. And Blair could easily have been number one if Iraq never happened, so Attlee stays number one.
I'm shocked Attlee wasn't top he created the nhs, nationalised utilities, decolonised of India, Pakistan, Burma, Ceylon, Jordan and Palestine/Israel he introduced social security, created National Parks and Areas of outstanding natural beauty and built over 1.2 million with 80% being social housing that's better than any modern prime minister by a long shot.
"Devolution" - this means the English government in London delegting more autonomy and power to the other 3 nations (Northern Ireland, Wales, Scotland). An example, the NHS in Scotland is seperate from NHS in England. They make their own decision about how the NHS is managed in Scotland. Devolution usually involves health, education and other areas etc.
To be honest, Theresa May was handed a poisoned chalice over Brexit. In her favour, she is very hard working.. I work for a local authority that is partly in her constituency, and she would frequently write to us on behalf of her cobstituents. I'm not a Tory by any stretch, but respect to her.
Churchill's War Cabinet had a mix of Tory, Labour, Liberal and Nationalists so yeah while Churchill led as PM on the war front, Attlee was leading more on the home front.
Atlee was PM when the NHS and Welfare State were established in the years immediately following WW2, Connor, and is most likely rememberd for these reasons. It's a shame this doesn't include the three most recent PMs - as it would be fascinating to see how Boris Johnson, Rishi Sunak and Liz Truss compare with the likes of Blair and Thatcher. In my own view, all three make Theresa May seem positively angelic by comparison...! Jim Callaghan, Gordon Brown, Theresa May, Liz Truss and Rishi Sunak are all perceived by many, as 'unelected' PM's as they inherited the office during a parliamentary term having won a party leadership contest after their predecessors had resigned. I'd not be surprised if that impacts upon their scores, particularly in terms of popularity. Boris Johnson also initially inherited the office this way, but chose to call a snap general election early on during his tenure - and was returned to the office with a large majority.
Most PMs become PMs without an election, to call any of them 'unelected' just shows an ignorance of how our system works: you vote for the party, not the Prime Minister.
@@paulharvey9149 Well I’m glad you at least understand it, I wasn’t sure with how you phrased it in the initial comment so just wanted to point out how most PMs don’t reach the high office through a GE.
One thing is for sure at the next survey there will be new company at the bottom with Liz Truss, though with such a short premiership i wonder if she will be considered for enough comparison across the different categories
Devolution is not Independence just that Wales and Scotland have their local Parliament which still relies on the English Parliament for many democratic functions.
This has nothing to do with this list, but I find it interesting. If Ukraine wins the war against Russia, I think volodamir zelenski will be like Winston Churchill, seen as a great war leader but won't lead the peace
Dear me you are very stupid or just never made it to school.Scotland and Wales have their own national parliaments and England is the only country within the British Isles without a national parliament
May was definitely performing under the constraints of straddling the Brexit rift. As a remainer who was willing to accept the public vote, she was arguably well suited to tackle it sensibly, but she took a lot of flak from both sides, and frustratingly hid behind repeated empty 3 word slogans.
The prime ministers that ty to realize what Benjamin Disraeli said. "The one duty of power is the social welfare of the people." and pursue policies in order to fulfil that function. Not those that pursue goals of self-deification.
I think sometimes with these surveys, the most recent PMs are scored quite strongly on the audience survey (negatively or positively) due to strong opinions of recent politics at the time it's questioned. I think May in the next survey is likely to climb a little in comparison to some of her successors but also the natural passage of time. Most PMs in their time achieve successes and policies for the better but the worst decisions etc often can overwhelm opinions. I really hated Blair taking us into Iraq but it took time for me to acknowledge social changes made domestically.
Attlee was in effect running the home front during the war, it wasn't that his party ran it, ministerial roles under him were from different parties. Churchill was running the war. Attlee's skill was in chairing committees, that's not to disparage him, it was a real skill, it meant that much more ambitious men with huge ability and enormous egos could work together under him. As Churchill said, he is a modest man, and has much to be modest about. Churchill's skill was in words, in energy and inspiration. The ratings are not a measure of the wartime performance, but Churchill's quieter second spell in the 1950s. After WW2 there are only major significant PMs and they are Attlee who set the post war consensus, Thatcher who ended that and set a new course and Blair who did so much damage to our constitution, and set the agenda for today. You could argue for Wilson who oversaw a lot of social policy, but he wasn't the driver of it. Heath took us into the EU, or Johnson for taking us out had impact. The rest really were just managing things as they went along and will be forgotten by history.
Churchill was scared of Attlee’s intellect and quiet confidence, that’s why he insulted him so much. Attlee was afraid of no one and was sure of his own abilities. A truly great man. When his party wanted to replace him as leader after their landslide win over the Tories, he ignored them and went to see the King anyway! Churchill was the right man for war, but he didn’t really care about the lives of the British people.
@user-fq8rs7rz3i I really don't think he was scared of Attlee's intellectual skills, and I seriously doubt Attlee would have thought so. He insulted him because it was politics, there was a lot of mutual respect. As for not caring for the British people, well putting aside the efforts he made to stop them being conquered, let's have a look at a bit of his ministerial career before being PM. He introduced the court of arbitration in industrial disputes, introduced the 8 hour shift rule in mines, introduced the Trade Boards with the power to prosecute exploitative employers establishing the principle of the Minimum Wage. He promoted the setting up of Labour Exchanges and the idea of unemployment insurance. In 1909 as Chancellor he presented "The People's Budget" with the aim of eliminating poverty. As Home Secretary he instituted prison reform and blocked the use of troops in the Tonypandy Riots. In in 1911 he introdued safety standards in Mines and working conditions in shops and drafted the National Insurance Act the foundation of the Welfare State. Later back as a Conservative Chancellor he reduced the pension age from 70 to 65 and introduced Widows Pensions. And while he was the Wartime PM, all the developments of policies on health, education and Welfare were carried out at his behest and were not carried out solely by Labour politicians, there still would have been an NHS if Labour lost in 1945. And after 1951 his domestic priority was to remove the rationing and restrictions which had carried on too long after the War. I think that quite a lot for one politican who was mostly focused on foreign affairs and War.
Please note that this survey is being scored by university students who are mainly left wing. Blair introduced Devolution which did enormous damage. In my opinion Blair did a huge amount of damage.
During the Second World War, the Government was a National Government, comprising all the major parties. Only in 1945 did normal party politics resume. Attlee probably won the survey because he initiated the post-war reconstruction programme, introduced the NHS, began the process of colonial independence, with India, Pakistan, Palestine/Israel, etc, and was in power when the UN was constituted to incl the UK as one of the four (later five) permanent members of the Security Council

Perhaps if you stopped shouting, people might take you more seriously. To say that Blair should be in jail is ludicrous. If you believe that then Thatcher, Churchill and Johnson (not covered in this vid) should join them.
Eden is by far the worst PM, whilst we were loosing the Empire and France and Germany were forming a coal and steel union which is where the EU began, Eden although invited to join at the start he preferred to conspire with the French and Israelis to steal back the Suez. Attlee is probably the better PM as he made the largest positive post-war changes socially with the forming of the NHS, Social Housing and his nationalisation program. In my lifetime Thatcher did the most harm as she sold off as much of our utilities and social housing which has undermined our national security. I mean how stupid does a country have to be to sell off its own water? The best PM in my lifetime has to be Blair, I remember 9/11 very well and I did not agree with the war but to put it in context, we failed to help the US with Vietnam and the US gave us very little help with the Falklands so when 9/11 happened I believe the UK standing shoulder to shoulder with the US was the right decision but unfortunately the US once again made the wrong decision and elected a moron with W,.Bush a man who couldn't find his way out of a room and I believe this impacted on Blairs reasoning. But as I grew up in London and were very used to IRA bombs going off, Bishopsgate, Canary Wharf etc. The Good Friday Agreement is by far his best achievement that is overlooked today due to Iraq.

They should add Blair, Brown and Thatcher together as she was responsible for all of it. A journalist asked her what her greatest political achievement was, and she said “New Labour”, meaning that even her opposition had to move towards the right and retain her policies to win an election (or three as it turned out). Within a couple of days of winning the 1997 election, Thatcher was an official guest at Downing St. Within days of Blair handing over to Brown, she was an official guest at Downing Street. Within days of Cameron forming the coalition government, she was an official guest at Downing Street. Even Sir Keir Stalin has removed her portrait from Downing Street as people found it triggering… and he probably figured there was no need for a portrait of her as there was a mirror on the wall in his office.
Don't understand all this criticism of Mrs Thatcher. She was very popular, won the Falklands conflict and served three terms as PM. I understand about the poll tax whingers but that is only because they had to make a contribution themselves rather than only homeowners with the rates system.
Our modern young have been educated by left wing teachers .When i was at school Churchill was a hero and his mistakes were not taught so it is basically a generational thing. One can find mistakes in the most popular of the PMs according to this study. Blair for instance is hated by some of the left for the reasons for going to war and the war itself in Iraq. Churchill was one of the few who actually fought in wars . As i believe Churchill said that this system was the best of the rotten lot which suggests the democratic system has all the faults of non democratic government just not to the same high degree . Though both America and Britain are today stretching that lower degree somewhat.
'Churchill was one of the few who actually fought in wars' Apart from Attlee who was at Gallipoli (one of Churchill's mistakes) and was wounded at the Battle of Hanna, Eden won the military cross in Belgium, Macmillan who was wounded three times in WW1, Heath, who served in the Royal Artillery and was present at the Normandy Landings and Callaghan who served in the Royal Navy. Home was in the Territorial Army between the wars, but was found unfit to serve in WW2 due to TB. Wilson tried to enlist but was rejected due to his education, it was felt his skills would be more useful in the civil service. Oh and the left don't like Blair for many reasons, one of them being that he entered two illegal wars. Blair committed British troops to conflicts more than any other Prime Minister, few object to Sierra Leone and Kosovo, Iraq in 1998 was legal, and limited to persuading Saddam to allow UN inspectors to view his military facilities, so no problem there. The invasions of Iraq 2003 and Afghanistan 2001 were both illegal. They exposed British troops to unnecessary danger during the war, and the risk of prosecution afterwards.
Because the video was made in July 2021 and Boris Johnson was still PM at that time and it would have been unfair to include the incumbent while their record was still a work in progress!
What is Thatcher, Blair and Cameron doing on this list? Those 3 ruined the U.K Some people said her in the U.K that Margaret Thatcher and your President at the time Ronald Reagan were having a fling. 😂
The worst is definitely Blair. The best it depends, there's never really been good British Prime Ministers since the 2nd World War. Churchill destroyed the Empire by getting into the war instead of remaining neutral and I suppose everything went downhill from there.

Who remembers Attlee? We remember Churchill due to WWII and all the books written about him. Thatcher knew what she wanted, and how she intended to achieve it - which is the reason why some want a new Thatcher.
Are you really that uneducated? Attlee and Macmillan were the two leaders who rebuilt Britain after the war. Okay, a quick list for you. The National Health Service Act 1946 (Created the NHS), The National Insurance Act 1946 (enabled flat rate pensions, sickness benefit and unemployment benefit), The National Assistance Act 1948 (Replaced the poor laws that had been in place since Elizabeth I), The Transport Act 1947 (Nationalised the four separate railways operating in Britain), Brought in Child benefit and family allowances, provided funding to local authorities, to establish social services. introduced legal aid and advice, gave workers the right to sue their employer, if they had been injured at work, established a pension scheme for firefighters, set up the youth employment service, nationalised industries vital to rebuilding a post war Britain, such as Electricity, Gas, Coal, Bank of England, Steel. That's just a few. Macmillan is often overlooked. He reduced the working week from 48 to 42 hours, brought in the Clean Air act 1956, the Factories act 1961 Both Macmillan and Attlee (as deputy Prime Minister), along with many of their subsequent ministers, served in the wartime National Government. Towards the end of the war, they brought in a wide range of acts that shaped postwar Britain.

🤣the fist part of this video is Politicians deciding their favourites WHICH DOES’NT GIVE A FAIR ANALYSIS BLAIR IS DEFINITELY NOT LIKED HES A CRIMINAL AND SHOULD BE IN JAIL ARE MOST PEOPLES SENTIMENTS IN UK , AND CHURCHILL HE MADE MANY MISTAKES AND WAS COVERED UP I CANT SEE THE MERIT IN HIM, THE WAR YEARS ITS ALL BEEN SENSATIONALISED YES HE DID SOME GOOD BUT IT WAS THE ELITE THAT HYPED HIS REPUTATION UP , JUST MY OPINION , AS FOR MAY SHE JUST WAS’NT STRONG ENOUGH AND WAS TALKED DOWN COMING BACK TIME AND TIME AGAIN WITH NO PROGRESS NO RESULTS AND GIVING IN AT THE BARGAINING TABLE AGREEING WITH THEM ONLY TO HAVE TO GO BACK TO THE TABLE THAT IS NOT EXCEPTABLE TO US WITH UK BREAKING AWAY FROM THE EUROPEAN MARKET (brexit ) SHE JUST COULDNT BE FIRM 🤷♀️
Wow, a sane comment in a sea of people with very short memories.

Thatcher and Attlee for tie. Both did what they set out to do. Good Job Starmer isn't on the list as he'd vying with Blair for bottom place.
Churchill was the best one
When Thatcher died we had street party's, bands playing, firework displays.... She was as popular as Jimmy Savile
Don't understand all this criticism of Mrs Thatcher. She was very popular, won the Falklands conflict and served three terms as PM. I understand about the poll tax whingers but that is only because they had to make a contribution themselves rather than only homeowners with the rates system.
Only the sad trash, the majority of society appreciated the fact she saved thr country
How ignorant can you be.
My vote goes to Larry. If he didn't like 'em they had to go. Hope he does the same with the one we've got now.
This is supposed to be a serious question.
@@valeriedavidson2785 Well you got a serious answer.
Churchill and Thatcher (we need her now)
Churchill was a raging racist. Thatcher ripped apart any cohesion the British society had. Our problems nowadays are rooted with Thatcher.
A lot of bitter conservatives in the comments getting upset over facts.
'Churchill was one of the few who actually fought in wars'
Apart from Attlee who was at Gallipoli (one of Churchill's mistakes) and was wounded at the Battle of Hanna, Eden won the military cross in Belgium, Macmillan who was wounded three times in WW1, Heath, who served in the Royal Artillery and was present at the Normandy Landings and Callaghan who served in the Royal Navy.
Younger people are always more left leaning, you're insane if you think there's some 'left wing teaching' conspiracy.
Why doesn’t it include the Prime Ministers since May?
Because the video was made in July 2021 and Boris Johnson was still PM at that time and it would have been unfair to include the incumbent while their record was still a work in progress!
The academics are all left......
Most intelligent people are.
Churchill was the best UK PM. I don't even know why there is a debate
He was a great wartime leader, true, but Attlee, Blair and Thatcher have had a greater impact on British society.
Good at war and that was about it. He was not a reformer and contributed nothing to post war Britian
He was nowhere near being the best.
What is Thatcher, Blair and Cameron doing on this list?
Those 3 ruined the U.K
Some people said her in the U.K that Margaret Thatcher and your President at the time Ronald Reagan were having a fling. 😂
I'm very put off by the release of 3 videos at the same time
Aww diddums!
The worst is definitely Blair. The best it depends, there's never really been good British Prime Ministers since the 2nd World War. Churchill destroyed the Empire by getting into the war instead of remaining neutral and I suppose everything went downhill from there.
You are comparing Blair with Johnson, Truss and Cameron?😂😂😂
@@joewilson4191 He was worse than all of them combined. He started all our issues with mass immigration and set us on the road to Brexit. And also a whole whost of issues.
@@fyrdman2185. The guy who set us on the roadvto Brexit was Cameron who called for his own party interests, not the country. Try and get up to speed on history.

In the UK the majority of Academics have for many decades been politically Left-wing and more recently promoting the Woke culture war. I think the US has had/has a similar problem. Blair is really hated by the majority of the population.

@@SpenceJS87 Personally I don't give a fuck what you are.
Personally I could not stand Tony Blair. A dreadful person. .In my opinion he did enormous damage to this country. I would say that Thatcher was a giant and by far the best Prime Minister along with Churchill.
He reduced the working week from 48 to 42 hours, brought in the Clean Air act 1956, the Factories act 1961
Both Macmillan and Attlee (as deputy Prime Minister), along with many of their subsequent ministers, served in the wartime National Government. Towards the end of the war, they brought in a wide range of acts that shaped postwar Britain.
Even the young, American guy in this video remembered Attlee.
We have never had a good prime minister.
