In my opinion Rex Nelon was one of the most underrated bass singers. He might not have been the lowest bass singer, but he was certainly one of the smoothest.
Dare I say, Rex's timbre is so much more pleasing to me and moreover he blended much better with the trio! It is so sad that almost no one acknowledges Rex...!
There sure isn't much on Rex. And he had an amazing voice. JD had such a crips clear voice back in the day. But he smoked 5 packs of cigs a day. He died of throat cancer, so that's why his voice didn't have much to give when he was older

Just don't like when he growls the notes. He's a great bass singer along with Rex Nelon and George Younce oh and Tim Riley. Can't forget Big Chief either.
Many talk about the great bass singers on this, and they are... I want to say a word about Hovie Lister. Hovie, was as fine a piano player as you could find (without even mentioning his emcee work or singing!) I am a blessed man because of gospel music!
Go back in time when JD sang this with the Blackwood Bro. He joined them after the BW Bros. airplane tragedy. June 30th. 1954. JD invented the Tour Bus, each singer with his own microphone, wrote over 500 Gospel Songs, and started the annual Quartet Convention that still goes on until now. Missing here was that sensational harmony on the chorus between Jake and Denver Crumpler. Plus, as great as JD was, no bass sang rhythm better than the Big Chief.
@@dougsmith9099 Wow! I agree! He was able to sing low notes melodiously , not to growl them
Smooth as silk, you're so right!
Agreed, his voice was very palatable…
Did you know that Duane Allen tried to hire Rex to join the Oak Ridge Boys?
