  • In this article I’m going to show the process involved in restoring a pair of 1995 Magura HS22 brakes.
For as long as the brakes have been on my bike, I have been itching to restore them. Not only were the brake levers and pistons scratched up, the cables were also damaged and too short. And the brakes themselves were in desperate need of a refill and bleed.
I came across CODA XYZ handlebars. And this Cannondale Super V originally came with these handlebars as well. Installing them meant I needed to overhaul the entire cockpit setup. And while I would be at it, it was time to also restore the Magura HS22 brakes.
Polished brakes would look great alongside the polished headset, polished crankset, and silver Thomson seatpost. It would be the end of a restoration journey, and together with a new set of shifters and these cool-looking handlebars, they would be the cherry on top of this awesome build.
Since these are the only hydraulic brakes I own I had none of the tools necessary to perform the bleed. So where I will be doing all the sanding and polishing, I asked Brian for help.
Brian runs his own bike shop called Reefo’s. He specializes in mountain bikes, and he basically knows everything there is to know about suspension. He has done a wonderful job on the Headshok suspension and was kind enough to help me out with these brakes as well.

Hi, thanks for the information in the video, I have just acquired a Proflex with HS22 brakes. My plan is to restore the paint work on the brakes and possibly replace the hoses. Do you know any details about the hose, olive and bolt for the older HS22? Do they use the current Magura parts? Thanks again.

I've reused the bolts of the original brakes. The hose is compatible with olives and HS33 parts, which is still soled today.

I have a pair of HS11 Evolutions. Unsure of what year they are but they’re at least 20 years old. Is it still possible to source replacement hydraulic hose for this brake?

Yes, as you can see in this video I use normal magura hoses you can still purchase today. You don't need any vintage stuff.

I don't know, the video was shot in my local bike shop so it's a standard part he had in store. Which means it's a standard part you should also be able to get online.

Magura is still selling their HS brakes and parts for it. AFAIK you can use modern levers and old cylinders and mix and match most parts. They changes screws from hex to tork and different mounting plates but in the end it's the same system as in the 1990s. Here in Germany they still sell new bikes with HS brakes. Due to the pedelec boom it's declining fast. The only hopelass part is trying to find drop bar HS66 levers. Long gone. No adapters availalbe. Most people remove their HS and go for canti or v-brakes when restoring or converting to drop bars.
