SORRY about the sound on this one. Taking steps to prevent this issue in the future. This is not a video you'll want to watch with good headphones.😞

Here for my participation points. The midsole is important for longevity and to be more repairable

Shoes were traditionally welted to a midsole, then an outsole was attached. Wear out the outsole, then a cobbler attaches a new outsole. Easier job. If an outsole is directly attached to the welt , you could wear it out and wear damage to the welt. More work. A cobbler will have to replace the damaged welt. For the person wearing the shoe, a repair is more expensive.

The bottoms of my feet have been busted to hell and back because I was in the infantry, so I really can't feel the difference between my Red Wings, the Parkhursts, Trumans etc. Honestly, it makes boot shopping a lot easier.

Of course you need a midsole.. c’mon now.. especially leather. All my Iron Rangers were sent to a cobbler and re done with the proper midsole and is a huge difference when all the leather is broken in. Looks better too!

Personally, I've found that when dealing with relatively heavy shoes/boots, which most GYW/stitchdown footwear are, lacking a midsole isn't a big deal for the first 10,000 steps of the day, but pretty soon after that you start wishing you had a bit more shock absorption underfoot.

I have the exact same freeports. I can’t wait for the sole to wear out. They couldn’t have designed a lug sole more effective at picking up gravel and debris.

Simple answer: yes. Can you live without it? Yes.

Love the Ottawas and I have 7 pairs in different leathers from GS, which started with the Dune CXL leather. GS has nailed the tanker shape and its the best mix of dressy and casual among all the competitors. Would love to see an in depth review if the GS Ottawa and Diesels on your channel.

It's okay to have an opinion. You can't please everyone, so might as well say what you think is right. I say Midsole! its tougher.

Plus, I hate feeling the ground below me except for boat shoes and stuff where that's the point

As a person who works in the coffee shop and stands all day on hard surfaces i find midsole helps a lot with shock absorption. Without it i feel more hit in steps after few hours

I think the need of a midsole depends on what you’re using the boot or shoe for .

I don't really care that my red wing heritage boots don't have a midsole (mocs have a rubber midsole). At re-sole I'll add a leather midsole. I love their insole.

I commented before I finished your video.
No, it's not a deal breaker.
I am in-between sleek and rugged. I don't want to be too dressy or rugged. I like the look of the midsole.
I may do one of two things with my brass boots before they even need a re-sole. I might replace the commando sole with a leather sole or a wedge sole (keeping the leather midsole), just to be different.

Actually taking time to think on it, I do think I prefer the sleekness of my black harness iron rangers without the midsole, but on my blacksmiths I do want that leather midsole.

A midsole always is better for durability as it will protect the footbed from water. It adds weight though. So it depends on what you want.

You make a good point though. For resolability it is a good idea. But you don't need it.

The use of a midsole has been a concern of mine since getting into service/heritage boots. My conclusion, it's highly subjective. I feel it comes down to cost, appearance, and comfortability.

I'm gonna say heavy insole before additional midsole.

I think a leather midsole is paramount.. now, I don't think they always need to be crazy thick like a White's boot or something.. lol, but even a thin veg tan midsole is better than none..
With all the moving around I do at my job,, there are times I wish my Drew's Logger boots were more lightweight with a thinner midsole

Love the split toe. How is the sizing and last on GS Ottawa boot compared to Aldens truebalance last they use on Indys?

Please fix your sound. There is a humming sound very distracting and makes it hard to hear what you are saying. Aside from that have been enjoying your content.
