I’m not native - but my daughter is, through her father. He’s not in her life so it’s my duty to learn about her culture, their traditions, & it’s importance so I can help her learn too. Her hair is right above her bum me she hates it and wants to chop it off, I’m definitely going to show her this video! Maybe it will help her understand the ❤ behind the choice to keep it long and healthy
find in that situation as your daughter. But my mom didn't learn about my culture to teach it to me. and I have most white friends and so it's all up to me to teach myself. I wish my mother would have done what you're doing
Thank you sir. I'm native and our culture is so important to me to share with my sons. Our children were stolen from schools until the 60s and 70s and given to white families to be raised. Our way of live has been stolen. If our stories are lost now the fact is we don't exist anymore. We are the bravest warriors. Fun fact to share... all usa attack helicopters are named after native tribes, they yell Geronimo for strength and bravery when they jump into combat from planes. Ww2 the navajo language was unbreakable and used them to carry the most important codes and was never broken. I say again thank you sir. What you think is a near meaningless act keeps my people alive and I can't thank you enough.
@@jaegonzales9137 Each strand is representative of the spirit of an ancestor, and a link to the energy in creation that binds everything together. It is an antenna we can use to stay in touch or tune with that power. I am male and Anishenabeg, my hair is long, it always has been. It is difficult for men to wear long at times because of the dominant culture, and for Women for the same reasons I suppose. When my Mother passed and when my Great Uncle passed, it was cut. I allowed it to grow out again after that. They say when we dream, at times we might leave our bodies and travel, we keep a braid on top of our scalp to help us find our way home...this is the basics as I was taught by the Manitiweelnau of our Midewidjig. The definition of assault is any unwanted, unwarranted, unwelcome touching. Period. So yes, cutting someone’s hair without their permission is in fact assault. But given the fact that hair is sacred in the Native American community makes the action even more horrid and disrespectful.
Im not native american but if someone cut my hair, were throwing hands. I dont care if the person is a woman, a teacher, whoever..

I’m Native American and Caucasian and if someone were to cut my hair I would cry for an entire calendar year straigh😭 my hair is very special to me
Long hair is a cultural characteristic of many Native American Men. Many other men of other races have short hair or are bald, which is a part of their culture. There is nothing wrong with maintaining, wearing your long hair, its part of your culture.
Long hair on Men used to generally be normal and Men in china, japan and much of the rest of the world were proud of their hair. Good quality long hair was often a symbol of power and honor. Short hair came with ancient Rome and for a period in time, a man having short hair was sort of viewed like hes weak and submissing to the Roman empire.
I started growing my hair out just like "why not" but later found a much deeper meaning in it and aim never going to cut it off
Yes sir true! My father is spanish and of a native blood line he was bald my mother was of full blood native blood line, I'm 60 and have long hair but have 59% native american and 41% Hispanic.😉🙂🤭

I don't even know what would happen in Russia if a teacher cut boy's hair: even touching children is strictly forbidden. Of course our teachers in the European part can be aggerssive sometimes, but cutting someone's hair is something hard to imagine even in my country.
@@svetlanakaravaeva7636 Indeed so! I advocate for a family in the US, who hold-to family behaviors that differ from the “corporate norm”. The dad is from the EU. The mom is some disabled related to long-term neglect & abuse on top of being differently-abled. They have several kids.
The births almost all were natural, in a home-setting. They all sleep in a family bed. Eat vegan. Very much health-optimizing in exercise, diet, & behaviors. They share bed, baths, & think nothing of appropriate, conservative, natural nudity among themselves, yet are appropriately modest around anyone not in the immediate family.
They homeschool, because public schools cannot accommodate special dietary needs, nor do public schools offer common sense education on many things. They are Not religious, yet, are highly ethical, & teach & model that to their kids.
All members grow their hair as they see fit….one boy had very long, flaxen hair…many “normals” feel uncomfortable with a male child with such long hair…they can’t tell gender because they are most used to hair styles indicating gender, even in childhood.
But the other boy wears theirs short.
The dad wears his short, more because he was raised that way, & because short male hair is better for business.
Yet, you cannot believe what their families & friends have done to make this family’s lives a living he!!…from specious CPS reports, to landlords thinking he could lech-after the mom. Family, friends & communities have criticized them as terrible, inappropriate, misguided, but all using threatening, ugly language at them, destroying their ability to be in local social groups, churches, etc., destroying the family online, pervasively.
THAT destructive, hateful language & defamation has already mentally destroyed the oldest child, & nearly gotten the others taken into foster care…or worse, put into the care of one of the dysfunctional family members who caused the damages to the mother in this family.
It’s been epic, the horrific roller-coaster that so-called “Normal”, “Christian”, “compassionate” citizens have perpetrated on any they think are “different”….without ever stopping to consider why, & that maybe, how this family chooses to live & raise responsible, natural humans to be in this world…might be a far better way.
There is much more growing hair long, & using amazing styles now, than in the last 100 years. The hippies brought it back some, & “norms” attacking Native hair, & black hair, has hit the news more, which has helped, a lot. But far more is needed, to stop the increasing attacks on our innate Spiritual connections…including long hair.
It’s not just about attacks on long hair. It’s very much about the polluted corrupted Agribiz industry, the Pharma/Chem industries, the long-corrupted religions (all of the corporate religions), corrupted education system, blocking use of psychedelic plant medicines used for spiritual progress, & more.
All of what society sees as “normal”, now, has been deeply, pervasively corrupted, tiny bit by baby-steps, over time…it’s been done just like how frogs put in a pot of cold water won’t fight to survive as the water gradually heats to boiling…they don’t know somethings wrong until too late.
It’s on the vanishing-cliff-edge of too late, right now. The next big step populations worldwide are about to take, is off the cliff into an Orwellian, micromanaged, gray world of humans treated as replaceable cogs for jobs…but no real Life.
Those who are awake to it, have a chance to change that very strong outcome, but not for much longer, &, it’s unclear how much change for the better can be done at this late date. But, still important to try.

I think all critics should be sent to Russia to look at our experience. We're not a very tolerant and democratic country, but there are big achievements in keeping different cultures and lifestyles.

Unfortunately, the US was so greedy to save possible scientists from Nazis after WW2, they helped many come here. Those ideations have continued, have grown, gathered more members.
CULTs are of all kinds.
But most important for public to learn (which they failed to do, in the 1970’s), was, how & why Cults form, & how those grow over time.
IF everyone knew how to see those coming, see them growing, & recognize the recipe card for growing a cult…there’d be lots less of them. They might also become more mentally stable themselves, for learning better, how psychology works & is applied.
The world could be a much more peaceable place.
For the last decade, as I endured and coped with many traumas, I cut and colored my hair frequently as it was my only healthy coping mechanism. now at 20, I live in a safe environment, and I can finally grow my hair out. It has taught me patience and as I learned about our ancestors’ hair being cut against their will it inspired me to choose to be visible and proudly Native. Our hair should never be cut and I refuse to bend to colonizers who invalidate my male two spirit identity because I have long hair. Long hair is part of my ancestry my cultures. My hair is sacred and so important to me. I’m glad I had access to education online and could learn about the importance of Natives’ hair.

I can relate. My life is finally steadier. Now I feel like I can grow it out. I also can overcome the historical trauma of my mothers, who were told their hair was ugly. My mother is also starting to grow it long. I wish you the best on your journey.
In high school someone came up put me in a headlock and cut my hair off. Although I am not a native American it was still extremely traumatizing

I’m adopted and I didn’t find out about my heritage until I was 12 after I took a dna test to find out what I am on my fathers side. I always just assumed I was a tan white person since my biological mother is white. Im from the southern United States and the Dakota’s. It took a lot of arguing with my parents to let me grow my hair long as they didn’t see it as “professional” or they would say “you’re half white though you know” finally after I showed them videos on the importance of hair in native culture that they let me grow it out. It’s been a year and a half now and I don’t intend to cut it anytime soon
Thank you for confirming that I have a right to feel violated by someone cutting my child's hair. The government doesn't get this and never has. They acted like I had done something wrong and scolded me because I was crying when they took it upon themselves to cut off my daughters hair. You don't cut another person's child's hair without there permission, period!!!!!!✊️

I am miniconjou (on my mothers side) but growing up my fathers side of the family would never let me grow out my hair because they didnt think it was as important to me and my culture as it is. It was a large part in why i felt disconnected from my lineage. I would see all of my cousins with their braids and long hair and wonder why i was the only one out of them who wasnt able to. It led to a snowball of cultural disconnections. But now as i am older and have had the ability to research im getting much more in touch with my heritage. Im incredibly thankful for the practices my family had instilled on my mothers side.
My hair is really long to my waist and like hell I will ever cut it or to be told to cut my hair.
Some years ago I was told by an employer to cut my hair. I replied, when you have all your thousands of female employees cut their hair short, I will cut mine also, as it is sexual discrimination and it is a violation of my religious belief system.
They quickly ceased their stupid comments.
It is my right as a human being to have long hair if I wish. It harms no other person by me having long hair therefore what is the problem.
I will never tell another person what to wear or how they should wear their hair.
Therefore, I expect the same legal rights given to me also.
Having really long hair as a male person is no ones business.
My long hair is part of who I am and it is part of my spiritual being.
I love and respect all cultures, but I admit to always having an affinity for Natives. I strongly dislike ignorance especially willful ignorance. I wish more people took the time to truly learn other cultures and races, to fully understand and respect them, you can learn great things.
Totally agree with you 👍...the various cultures bring about a divergence similar to the flowers in our gardens with there variant colors.. patterns and fragrances...I have a special affinity to the Native American ways especially the long hair..heard it acts like an antenna to the spiritual realm? I am a white skinned woman born in amiskwaciy-wâskahikan (Edmonton) and have been living in Moh-kíns-tsis (Calgary) for almost 6 years. I have recently begun learning about indigenous culture in order to better understand the significance of the residential school system. I found the video of the Blackfoot child Rafe Vadnais reporting the violation of getting his braid chopped off at school. I absolutely agree that it was assault, and my heart broke for Rafe and his family and all indigenous people that suffered the same violation. I am ashamed of this part of my Canadian heritage. Residential schools were barely discussed when I was educated at the U of A to become an elementary school teacher. How helpful it would be for the next generation of learners, if indigenous studies were a major part of teacher training in Canada! I want to learn more about how we can all live together in harmony, and to do that I must learn more about your nation, your land. When we look at our peoples as equal siblings of mother earth, we are all brothers in the same family. All peoples are equal in the sacred circle as I have come to understand via indigenous educational teachings available online.White skinned people have violated against our indigenous sister, by taking her land and claiming it ours which is against the laws of nature. The land is not owned by anyone, we need to take care of it together. I am learning how to do better. I will make sure to pass on the Blackfoot teachings from elder Shantel Tallow to my own children.
In 60's my dad took me to get a hair because of the schools in Texas. At 60 now retired my hair is long. I point to the north here in border farm land Texas when I clean my hair brush and let the south wind Carrie it away offering it to usseen and the land praying to bless it people and land I am Spanish and two tribal native blood lines.
Oh, I understand it very well. It's a very important topic for all people in Russia, all 180 ethnical groups. In republics in Siberia and the Far East boys' and men's long hair is normal, but in the European part outside Moscow our society is conservative. The law is on childrens' side, but implicit bullying and shaming are common at school and further education college. This is why giong to the uni after school/college + growing out hair means the man has got long-awaited freedom.

It’s true, our hair is what we consider a staple part of ourselves. It means so much to me, I give praise to all the native men who can have long hair. I for one cannot it just bugs me so much but I know it also makes me feel very cut off to my culture no matter how much I learn and dig to be apart of it.
Right now there is growing awareness of the horrors of residential schools and the tragic deaths of so many indigenous children here in Canada. Our greatest shame.
When I was young in foster care they cut my hair when I slept and put my braids in the garbage ..I was 11 my care giver said to social worker she was fed up of fixing it for me

I wish you could help the young native boy I found on UA-cam who had his long hair cut. It doesn't seem that the people understand the importance of his hair to him . To see him cry and know that he was tortured at school by boys trying to Shame him it broke my heart. Someone needs to help his family. They seem to be alone in this plight.
My daughter is Lakota. Someone cut her hair because it was tangled and she didnt know how to deal with it 😫

I'm Paiute and Miwok and my daughter had a strong intuition before she had her hair maliciously cut by a member of her fathers family, and when she came back to me she was crying for several days that she can't hear or see things anymore. She just turned 5 and had never had her hair cut until a few months ago.
@@cynthiag1557 I am 66 years old and have had long hair all my life. In 2016 I contracted legionnaires disease and spent a month in the hospital being given harsh antibiotics and medication which caused hair damage. So I cut my hair off so that it could grow back more healthier. After cutting my hair I felt weak, disconnected and imbalanced. I also lost my intuition. My hair has now grown back and is now arm pit length. Since growing back I have regained my balance and intuition. I believe what I experienced is connected to my hair.

long hair is not only part of their culture. with long hair you will be able to feel peoples precense and have better hearing.
I used to work with a guy who kept flipping my hair. After telling him several times not to do that, he kept on. Finally I said to him that flicking my hair is the same thing as groping my crotch. He finally stopped.
I’m an 8th Cherokee ,many years ago I went to my first Pow Wow ,it was one of the most incredible experiences I ever had ,I remember one man who was dressed all in white his head dress was magnificent and his hair was well last his waist,this video was very informative thank you.

My father had hair almost as long as mine. Except for one or two times, he never let anyone other than me and my sister touch it. He was proud about his hair :). Sadly, though, he did have it cut just before he died. I remember him telling my sister to cut it, and I remember me protesting about it. Six days after my sister snipped his hair off, he died. I still have his hair. Ironically, even though he was proud about his hair and very rarely cut it, he was kinda negative about how long mine was (he was always telling me that I needed to cut it and I'd always come back saying no as it was my strength and that it'd aid my ancestors in recognizing me).
Please let that man rest in eternal peace, and please let the ancestors know who he is.
I wonder if I am related to Leonard moose. My fathers last name was moose. 😊 I don’t know either sides of my “families”.I am older now but I would still love to get to know “my family”. I haven’t known any of them since the age of 5 when I was taken away from them all. I was from white earth reservation in Minnesota.

I even though I'm white from my Irish German brightest side what I love the most about my Native American side is my hair. Everyone loves how soft it is and I love the fact I don't have to shave my legs lol

My high school forced native boys to cut their hair. Ironically the school is named after the town, which is named after Creek Chief Sapulpa, in Creek County, in a state named with a Choctaw word: Oklahoma. Sapulpa has a LARGE Creek population, yet natives are not allowed to be natives when it comes to the school system, and no exceptions are made. Talk about cultural suppression and oppression.

When I see a native man with braids I respect him. It’s very rare I see it though.
My mother grew her hair until 1 year before she was buried. She told me, "you are the first person in my family without black hair, but you are just as much part of this tradition as the rest". I still have long haor.

In Filipino culture, hair isn't just hair, it's a link to any challenges either it's heavy, severe and light
I am a victim of abuse. And beyond the punching and binding...............when he cut my hair - that was it. I was done. Like there's no going back now.............he pulled up my bangs/hair and cut it right at the root. There's no going back after that. I hardened my heart and thankfully moved on. Hell hath no fury as a woman scored with cut hair. (he eventually killed himself by hanging) Haven't cut my hair since.

I’m mixed, and i’m part native from my Grand-mother. I don’t look native that much, people thought when i was younger that i was all kinds of origins like italian, portugese, or even plain white with olive skin 😂 I don’t mind looking different. I always had my natural long hair, so important to me. But now being 50 years old, with my hair almost completely white, still long down to my waist, i feel like people recognize really fast what i am… Growing up close to my grandmom culture, people tell me « are you native » just by the way i carry myself and the way i dress even thou i don’t ware cultural clothes. My nature is coming from within and shows who i am. I know that my hair has a lot to do with beeing recognized as what i am. I’m a low profile person and i know who i am but beeing recognized by my hair, I totally understand what you’re saying. Sorry for my English, it’s not my first language 🤷🏽♀️

As a Scandinavian. As the Viking we where and yes they aren't that good as Hollywood is showing them to be. But as all the wikings was expert sailors, we gathered culture from every nation and made something out own from it.

African Americans and Native Americans definitely need the "Don't F**k with My Hair" laws springing up in different states. It's sad that we need laws for that.

@@stevencorrea8032 The law isn't about them. It is about institutions and people who think it's okay to demand changes to hair to the point of coercing individuals into haircuts administered by teachers, coaches, employers and whoever else thinks it's okay to do that to targeted groups.
Native American males have had braids clipped because the braids clashed with someone's concept of how hair should be.
Native Americans wear braids to honor elders and for rituals. African Americans wear braids to protect their hair. Curly hair, no matter your race, is drier and more fragile than straight hair.

I love my long hair and I don’t like cutting it. I braid my own hair. My hair is long and thick.
Interesting how Tibetan Buddhist monks shave their hair for their spiritual practice.
The Holy men of India (as part of Hinduism) and the Rastafarians have dreadlocks for their spiritual practice.
Native Americans have long hair or braids for their spiritual practice.
Other religions like Sikhs and Muslims cover their hair.
Jewish men wear their hair very short with a Yamaka. And some Jewish women wear wigs over their natural hair when they get married.
I am atheist so I find it very interesting how different religions/spiritualities have different spiritual practices for hair.

I have never been a religious or spiritual person. My hair never had a higher meaning to me. I'm not native.
But even so, my hair was and is important. I let other people dictate how long it was. And I didn't realize just how miserable it was making me. I thought I was going to be made homeless if I had my hair the way I wanted it. So I waited until I knew I was going to lose my fight with SI within 40 days. If I got kicked out, it would only make the clock run out faster.
I cut my hair short. And I cried with happiness on the way home from the barber. And thankfully my spawn point didn't kick me out for it- though she barely talked to me for a solid month after I came home. Cutting my hair literally saved my life.
My hair has no spiritual significance. The only thing my hair length really means to me is my gender. I'm not native, I'm just trans. And even without religious significance, it was life and death for me.
I literally can't imagine the devastation people would feel if they were forced to cut off hair that was sacred to them. "Assault" is putting it mildly.
Let's face it, it's magnificent and makes the wearer have superior looks. The short cut just looks odd.
My sister & brother look is Native American like Dad. But, I don't, I look like my mom.
Hispanics are Native American also. The majority of us have indigenous blood. From our Aztec, Mayan, Incan ancestors, including other tribes.
