I think some of the people in the audience do not realize that Dame Edna is a character. They talk to her as if she's a real person! They do not get the point of Dame Edna at all! It is completely lost on them. Could there have ever been such a naive and innocent time? The gynecologist jokes got no response at all!
So many people were so unsettled by Dame Edna that they really couldn't see the humour. Particularly in the USA, a man in women's clothing shook them to the core. It's better nowadays, but Dame Edna was the ultimate piss-take, especially of the British establishment.
Vicki wasn't cancelled. Her show being taken from her and given to 'guest' hosts tanked the ratings and then was morphed into the Marilu Henner show which was cancelled. Vicki's show was awesome and is better than all the subsequent daytime talk shows put together. No wonder people say you have no taste.
