  • Want to build your own tip-up fishing rig? This simple project will cost you less than 15$ to make and about 45 minutes of your time.
    This tip up rig is perfect for the casual or hardcore fisherman. With this set up, you will be able to easily see if you have a bite!!! If you got multiple rigs set up, you will be able to glance over and see if the flag has popped up... If it has, then you know you got a bite!
    This is also great if you just want to hang out on the ice and not have to hold the rod the entire time you're out there... Ice fishing has never been so easy!!
    PS: make sure the reel is in the open position so that if you have a bite you don't lose your rod... it is meant to free spool until you grab your rod and take action!
    THINGS YOU WILL NEED!!!!
    To make this tip up fishing rig you will need the following: a piece of 2x6 lumber, a spring door stop, a metal rod, a wood rod, a piece of pipe, some 2 part epoxy, some type of fabric and a couple basic wood working tools.

    Have any of you tried this type of setup? If so how'd you like it?

  • @fishlovme
    @fishlovme 4 роки тому +6

    Very similar to the ice riggers that HT now makes, but homemade, I like it! I met the guy who got the patent on the ice rigger about 15 years ago. the one problem I've had with this type of setup is occasionally the line doesn't slip out of the clip. I've found if you put a little piece of masking tape over the tubes that it slides off easier.

    It seems to be very sensitive so if you are using bigger bait it might go off a lot but outher than that great idea

      Andrew Goman yeah I forgot to mention that you can use o rings to make it less touchy

    One improvement I can suggest. Get those little clip on bells and clip it or glue it onto the flag metal pole just below flag. When a fish triggers yhe flag that bell will ring as flag pole waves. You get a visual and hearing triggr.Great if sitting in a ice tent or low light or dark. You'll hear the flag trigger.

    If you want it to be less touchy you could cut the notch on for the trigger on the opposite side of the slanted piece on the dowel so that it has to turn 180 degrees instead of just a tiny pull. Hopefully that made sense.

      I just added a rubber o ring between the pins on the other side 😋 but your idea works too!

    Nice job man. When you set your rod in there do you leave bail open or just set drag next to nothing ? Great project. Going to make maybe 2 of them.

    Nice design, one question... how much pull (from a fish) does it take to release the flag?
    I know that aligator clips hold pretty tight.

    • @ThePioneerChannel
      @ThePioneerChannel  5 років тому +1

      Lol well I put small clear hose on the alligator clip so it doesn't wreck the line.. but i got it right on the edge of the clip so it comes out with a little tug, just enough to set the flag off.

    • @ThePioneerChannel
      @ThePioneerChannel  5 років тому +1

      But if you find it turns too easy, what I did I just twisted a rubber band a bunch of times between kabob pin and the block the dowel goes through

    Have you had any issues with durability, with everything being held together solely by epoxy???

    • @ThePioneerChannel
      @ThePioneerChannel  5 років тому +1

      Nope! Everything has been holding up... but if you wanted the extra durability incase you drop it or something, you could for sure add screws.

    • @photofather1
      @photofather1 5 років тому +1

      I was thinking same thing why not a few screws? im still gonna make with screws thanks

      @@photofather1 😋 screws wouldn't hurt... but don't underestimate the strength of glues and epoxy.. I watched a video a while ago where they test the strength of wood glues and epoxy and in almost every glue they tested the wood broke before it became unglued

    • @ThePioneerChannel
      @ThePioneerChannel  4 роки тому

      I don't have it with me... but I think it was around 14 to 16 inches. But you can make it longer or shorter for your rod length. .

    • @timdolberg3293
      @timdolberg3293 5 років тому

      I made mine a few years ago and have caught several northern pike on them but I did use screws and bent the flag pole into a small u then inserted into spring from bottom no glue on any of it.

    This looks pretty interesting I just didn’t know understand The wooden dowel how are you carved it cut it out 45° and a little slot how does that hold the flag ... How does it make the flag go up just because of a 45° cut

    • @ThePioneerChannel
      @ThePioneerChannel  3 роки тому +1

      Because there's a little notch there and when it turns it slides up the 45 and spring's upwards.. without it the flag would just stay stuck under the dowel

    using the alligator clip would snap your line.... usually when ice fishing you are using much less poundage of line. this clip is going to break your line. why didn't you just make a rod that the line goes around and make a small loop in the line. when pulled, the line slips right off but still activates the flag....

    • @ThePioneerChannel
      @ThePioneerChannel  3 роки тому

      If you watched the video, you'd know I put 1/8 th inch tubing over top the alligator clip teeth to not damage the line

    • @derekshaw6680
      @derekshaw6680 3 роки тому

      Hes saying the clip holds the line too tight and unless you have a big fish hit, the line may not release. Im actually in the process of building a couple of these but I am stuck at this exact point. Pike arent very big in my area and I cant seem to find a clip that works. The loop thing could work though.
