  • Ultra wide angle lens distortion is great for landscapes but not so great for real estate photography. In this video I will talk about the implications for ultra wide angle lens distortion and how I approach each interior space with an eye to minimise its affects.
    In this informal video series, I will be talking about the business of Real Estate Photography, with topics loosely grouped under either the business of real estate photography or the art of real estate photography and will include everything from starting up to shooting to post production. Although these videos will focus specifically on the genre of real estate photography, there will be many ideas that can be helpful for any photography business. I hope you enjoy these videos as its one of my passions as a professional photographer to help train and coach people who are considering a career in photography for the benefit of all.

    This is something I’ve had to explain to sooooo many agents, it’s ridiculous! So glad you did this. Old video…still relevant.

    Very informative. I've been shooting real estate for a couple of years and 2 things that I would do for this shot is: Move the plant off the counter in the right side of the frame along with the coffee maker (sit out of view). It leaves no visual interruptions along that counter perspective line and makes the room feel bigger. I might of cropped out the fridge for this shot and taken another angle to show the fridge in relation. But that is why photography is an art and science lol

    I watched this vid yesterday and today I had an interior shoot of a new listing. I knew something was off with my interior shots. I had purchase a Rokinon 14mm ultra wide angle thinking it would be the best and most affordable lens to marry with my D750 to do real estate photography. I just couldn't figure out way my pictures were not turning out as well as others who do real estate photography. I finally decided to ditch the Rokinon in favor of the new Sigma 14-24,, 2.8 Art lens. That change alone was a big jump but what really made the difference was applying what you said in the video. I set my tripod up just above waist height because it seems that's where everyone shoots at, (not eye level, which for me is about 6'2"), and I started out at 24mm not 14mm. If I needed more info in the shot I'd try moving back somewhat. What a difference. I can actually say I'm happy with several of the shots and know I have more to learn, but your video really got me going in the right direction. Thanks for posting it, and all the others as well.

    Spot on! Thanks so much for this very clear instruction on how to use an ultra wide angle lens for real estate video. This is the 4th video I've watched on the topic and you are the first one who dwelt on how to minimize distortion when taking the photo; whereas, the others spent their time showing how to remove it in post processing. As a contract real estate photographer I shoot and upload, with no control of post processing, so I must do my best to turn in a true image out of the camera. Your video confirms what my experiments are telling me and it is speeding up my learning process. It also gives me a process to follow onsite to get the best picture possible.
    On a side note, your accent sounds similar to another UA-camr that I subscribe to for real estate video training, a New Zealander named Grant Johnston. Maybe someday I'll find the means to travel to your side of the globe for a visit to Australia and NZ!

    JEFF! Very nice and informative video. I'm just starting a Real Estate Video service here in the Kansas City area. I'm planning on specializing in aerial footage as well as interior videos. Probably not going to do a lot of still photos unless the agents ask for them. Anyway, I've been using two lenses and trying to determine which one would be best: 18-135mm and 10-18mm. I like the ultra wide view of the 10-18, but you're absolutely correct about the distortion. At 10mm my distortion is unacceptable. Plus, my 18-135 will allow me to open the aperture to f3.5 at 18mm. That obviously closes up my depth of field so I usually shoot at 24mm so I can keep more of the shot in focus. My main issue at present is trying to decide whether ISO of 800 is too grainy. It's a balancing act between getting a less noisy image by opening the aperture to let in more light, but that shortens my DOF and presents of focus issue. Any suggestions on the best combination of settings to get the best video? I have found that if I close the aperture down a bit and underexpose, I can bring it back in post and keep the noise level lower. This video was very helpful. Thanks for posting it.

      Hi Magnum, for video I use a sony a6000 with a 12mm Samyang Cine Lens. I set my ISO to Auto and 100-3200 range with the shutter at 1-2 times FPS and then aperture varies according to light levels. The a6000 does suffer noise especially in the shadows so you have to keep your exposure to the right. I find that distortion is not as big a problem for video as photos.

    I have watched dozens of real estate videos over the last few weeks - you are the only one who has suggested using 24mm to control distortion. I have gone out and bought a 9mm and a 12m manual focus lenses for my crop sensor Sony A6000. I will have to rethink what lens to use !

    Hi Jeff! Unfortunately quite a bit of our real estate agents prefer “ultra wide” look, as they indeed want to exaggerate space more, in that instance you would go ahead with the agent instructions?

    • @unknownnumber1264
      @unknownnumber1264 5 років тому

      I've had this problem with a few. They seem to be dishonest agents in general ;) and they often wonder why they can't sell a listing with all that fake exaggerated space. Prospective buyers are misled into believing that there is a 10' vaulted ceiling etc. then simply walk off. I've learned that really the price is all that sells. If I were you, I'd try to find a happy balance with those troublesome agents. Take 2 versions and let them choose..

    Hi Jeff. Excellent information!! I just bought a sigma 8-16mm ultra wide (for Nikon crop sensor) and notice a lot of distortion when you go to 8mm. So with regards to focal length for interior you mentioned on this video is this for full frame? I use a Nikon D7500 crop sensor. So I would be looking at starting at the 16mm focal length on my sigma which is about 24mm on a full frame.

    OK, so this an issue with any ultrawide. I thought my sigma 14-24 looked exceedingly distorted. At even 20mm. But guess it's an issue with all ultra wides.

  • @AerialLensVideo
    @AerialLensVideo 6 років тому

    THANKS for a very instructive video! I guess we really have to optimize our choice of focal length (I am guilty of over using 18mm). Question - What do you do for a really (REALLY) tiny space when you want to capture everything possible in a SINGLE image? As examples, super small bathrooms or walk-in closets that are spectacularly appointed? I've been trying to un-distort and straighten out fisheye images of those situations - very time consuming in post and difficult to get a pleasing result.

    • @jeffbrislane5782
      @jeffbrislane5782  5 років тому +1

      When I have to, I go as wide as 14mm on my 14-24 zoom in really tight spaces when showing features that require it in my opinion. I’m always trying to minimise the distortion but i will still go down to 15 or 14mm if I need to

    • @AerialLensVideo
      @AerialLensVideo 5 років тому

      Thanks. Yeah, me too now. I am an Olympus mirrorless user and tired from the edit process with the fisheye (a very good, sharp one by the way, called the Meike 6.5 f2) and finally broke down to buy their 7-14mm f2.8 Pro lens. Must say the results are very pleasing now even though the distances are indeed rather over-pronounced as you have explained. For that reason - since it is real estate images - I may add a little text label stating "Extra Wide View." The 7-14mm lens makes quite the difference from the 9-18mm I have been using for regular sized rooms. Man, are good lenses expensive or what?! Yipes.

    Thanks for a great video, very informative on the problems with distortion with ultra-wides. I just wonder about those zero-distortion lenses like, Laowa 15mm or Voightländer 15mm, will they produce less of that oval clock distortion or is it just barrel distortion that those lenses avoid? I'm asking since I try to decide whether buying an utrawide zoom or just go with a 15mm prime.

    • @jeffbrislane5782
      @jeffbrislane5782  5 років тому

      I have never used one of those lenses but I would assume they only correct for barrel distortion. What we see around the edges of an ultra wide lens is the natural stretching that they produce, which is a form of distortion but it’s due more to lens physics then lens imperfection if you know what I mean

    I’ve been shooting with my 24-70 2.8 G Master and insecure about the work I’ve submitted but the client hasn’t said “anything” negative and in fact, keeps hiring me for more work.
    I shoot almost exclusively at 24mm and supplement those shots with my 35mm 1.4 to highlight the accents in the home.
    I was going to invest (and prob still should) in a 16-35 but thinking maybe just the Rokinon 14mm 2.8 for those very tight areas like a bathroom.

    This is the best video an aspiring MLS Photographer will see. I shoot DX at about 18 mm to preclude elongated windows and doors, the sort of distortion which makes the interior look different than what the eye sees. On fx, 28 mm seems to work out best. Bathrooms about 10mm with dx and 16 mm with fx to get what the eye takes in, still there's some acceptable distortion. There are times when I will shoot wider than what I prefer, like when the customer says he wants to highlight the floor, meaning foreground floor area. Those shots are carefully controlled by pointing the camera for a perspective which minimizes side doors and foreground windows if possible. I think getting the proper perspective is the most important thing to producing effective MLS Photography. While most real estate videos are all about using layers in Ps, getting the perspective right is what's most important. Everything else supports the perspective. sterlingimagesphotography.com
