As a Scandinavian, I will teach you this. Scandi knifes are rearly/never fulltang. We always use a knife - axe combo. Knifes for finer/smaller tasks, axes for Heavy deuty tasks. Both do well in self defence.
The Futura sheath is very unique and that whitish portion is not rubbed by the inside of the leather sheath. That whiteness is from the wood color unevenness. But in some other cases the oil finish is easy to be rubbed off by the inside of the leather sheath. So I sometimes need to reoil it with linseed oil or tung oil. Thanks.
Temagami handle is completely hand filling for strong push cut in bushcraft. Futura handle is thin for side holding in game dressing. Helle handles have two kinds and they are very different. Before purchasing you need to check up which type the handle is. Besides a handle which has a hump on its butt locks the hand and no good for a variety of holdings. The blade geometry is the same on all of helle knives and you don't need to care about it. All are extremely sharp. Thanks.
Thank you for you videos. You seem to love knives like I do. My friends think I'm nut because I have a few hundred knives. Helle is my favorite followed by Bark River and Black Jack. Good job and thank you Jay
Many thanks for passing on your superior knife knowledge...after watching your videos very closely I settled for the Helle Futura and I am very pleased with it for the money. I know that your favourite is the Black Jack but this was a little too expensive for my needs. Please keep up the great video's.
Futura is originally the name of a typeface that was simple and straight forward and the name has been adopted as kind of a commercially used name usually meaning simple and straight forward.
I think you are saying about the handle issue. I have no experience on the Fjellkniven. But I once owned the Fjellbekk. Its handle had no hump on its butt and was completely hand filling. I think it is a good bushcraft knife. Thanks.
wow! Huge collection you have there! Would love to see a video on that! I love Helle knives myself, and I find it strange that it didn't come sharper. All the knives I've seen from Helle came super sharp from the box. Thanks alot for sharing! I enjoy your videos very much!
@Iseekoutthetruth No. When the declaration on the paper on the package is less than $200, they don't take any tax in Japan. If it is over $200, they take 5% tax certainly. Thanks.
@svslev I have ever owned the S1. It has a no beveled portion on its spine side and its convex bevel angle was fairly deep. And it was not able to make a keen edge like Bark Rivers. Thanks.
Hey Wako,I like the looks of the Helle knives very much but I like the higher grind or angle of the other knife better. The knife with the two colors of wood on the handle is the ideal knife for me.The narrow handles are better for my hand. The meaning of the word Futura is close to the word Future. It is a word used in naming things that are of a period of time which is yet to happen. So futura is used to name things that are meant to be thought of as very advanced and new or better. Thanks you.
@mz9393mz Huter10 is a stronger knife than Elk. Deeper angled edge and shallow belly drop point. I miss it. But I gave it to my friend and I now have a Boar carbon of which steel is less impressive than 12C27. I offered my friend trading them and he refused. It was because he pretty much loved the Hunter10. I was happy with it. Thanks.
Thank you. I didn't know at that point of time that its laminated stainless steel was very soft and very easy to take rolls. Helle's laminated stainless steel is very soft and no good for bone touching. You had better go to 12C27 or carbon.
Are you going to break down and get another Karesuando Hunter 10? I recall you said you liked that one better than the Elk in a video last March. I look forward to the collection update!
I think Futura is a marketing type word. Not an actual word but sounds close. Kind of like Impreza sounds like impressive or Acura sounds like accurate.Integra sounds like integrity and so on. I think this explanation also aplies to the typeface referred to in the previous comment. Not fact just my hypothesis.
I'm guessing your wife has a closet full of shoes😀 My wife thinks I'm crazy for having 6 knives LOL😄 Whenever I bring her home a gift she always says "You bought yourself something didn't you?"...... 😏
@virtuovice Yes, I remember watching that video in which your friends was using the knife you gave him. I could tell you were hoping he would trade it back. :)
THANK YOU FOR YOUR REPLY... YOU ARE A GREAT SOURCE IF INFO... CAN'T WAIT TO SEE MORE HUNTING VIDEOS. I HOPE YOU ARE DOING WELL. PLS SHOW HOW U STALK AND HUNT AND EDC WHEN HUNTING BOTH IN THE SUMMER AND COLD...THANK YOU SO MUCH BLADE MASTER
futura is a sort of "slang" i guess, Future means, What happens next, yesterday was the "Past" today is the "present" tomorrow is the "future" the next week is always the "future", all time from here on out is the "future"
Helle knives are excellent to look at but to use on a day to day basis there rubbishy lose there edge on basic wood tasks also go through a knot you'll chip the blade ,,, they sharpen back quick with ease but not really for medium to heavy use .. For maybe light tasks it's ok but I've failed it ,, steel not good for my tasks
I think you have misunderstood, the Norwegian knife culture, and also the thinking behind a lot of the designs that helle puts out. The two knives that you show on video here are designed for specific purposes. Most Norwegian knives are not necessarily that. Most fall under the "tollekniv" category in one way or another. A "tollekniv" is a all-round knife, a farmer's friend. And Norwegian knife design is very influenced by this concept. The one knife you have on your belt, at all times.
As a Scandinavian, I will teach you this. Scandi knifes are rearly/never fulltang. We always use a knife - axe combo. Knifes for finer/smaller tasks, axes for Heavy deuty tasks. Both do well in self defence.
Indeed :)

Very good review and subtle points on the differences in handle design for hunting or bush craft. Thank you very much!

Helle knives are amazing!
@svslev I have ever owned the S1. It has a no beveled portion on its spine side and its convex bevel angle was fairly deep. And it was not able to make a keen edge like Bark Rivers. Thanks.

Chosera is by far the best artificial stone definitely. But the steel of Futura is one of the softest and any stone will sharpen it. Thanks.
Another beautiful knife. Thanks for sharing.

I gotta say I think the temagami is a good compromise
@virtuovice Yes, I remember watching that video in which your friends was using the knife you gave him. I could tell you were hoping he would trade it back. :)

Hi, I'm just wondering if you have ever had a chance to try Fallkniven S1 ? They claim it's the best hunting and fishing knive ever made?!? Thank you
another great review, can't wait for the next
Nice videos you make Sir!
Those handles are very attractive : )
Do you think the helle fjellkniven would be a good bushcraft knife?
Ahahah! Great my friend! That was the video I was waiting for! What a beautiful piece!
What type of stone would you recommend for sharpening the Helle Futura? any certain brand better than others?
Excellent explanation of bushcraft knife versus hunting knife. I prefer "knife people" greeting too. 8-) Domo arigatou Wako san.
WHICH HELLE KNIFE WOULD YOU RECOMMEND ?
@newcoyote Yes, I think you're exactly right.
knives are dangerous things, they are so easy to get obsessed about. you buy one good knife and soon you want more of them. :)
"Hallo, knife people"
