This is my kind of golf. I know it’s somewhat anti golf social but I absolutely love playing alone and carrying my clubs. I’m 64, been playing 52 years. It’s part of my DNA at this point in life. Going to the golf course is like going to church for me. I feel a very deep connection with the nature and outdoors aspect of it all. Great video and thank you for sharing.

My friend, I could not agree more. You have summed up my feelings perfectly. Yes, I enjoy playing with friends and especially with my sons. But I am never happier than playing on my own even/especially when the weather has put off 99% of the fair weather brigade. If you are uk based, try travelling to Perthshire t play the gorgeous Killin GC. It’s a beautiful 9-holes which looks like a pitch and putt until you actually play it. Stand on the elevated 6th tee looking down into Glen Lochay on one side and Glen Ogle on the other and listen to the buzzards and eagles crying on the wind. Life does not get better, trust me

Have always wanted to play a Scottish course, but at 76 that's unlikely, living in Canada doesn't help much either. But playing late in the season, alone, is something I identify with. I managed a last game here in Toronto on Nov 28th, this year. Just me and the course. Loved it.

Andy what a great video, it brought back so many memories.
In May 1999 I played 54 holes at Royal Dornoch, 36 on the Championship course and then 18 on the Struie. I won with 38 points off 12 in the morning, won another £20 in the fourballs in the afternoon and then a tenner in a three ball in the evening. A couple of beers in the clubhouse and then walked back with my playing partners- Paul Burden and Johny Midd, to our hotel in the town. The weather was fantastic, the course probably the best I’ve played in the UK, and it was light until nearly 23.00 hrs, we had a truly glorious day together plus I won so a perfect golfing day.
Just writing this takes me back to a time when we were all younger and playing, and of course walking, 36 holes a day around links courses, alternating each May between Ireland and Scotland for 5 days was what we did then! The particular day at Royal Dornoch was so good that the three of us just had to play the extra 18 on the Struie.
Sadly, several of the group are now playing par golf on that great golf course somewhere in the universe, they are all missed.
Paul and John, my playing partners in the evening, are also no longer with us but as I write this the memory of us shaking hands on the 18th as dusk was nearly with us, walking back together to the hotel in the town, reliving our day, good shots and bad, with our clubs still slung across our shoulders, then having a few beers in the evening before battle commenced again in the morning. It brings a very big tear to my eye, and I can’t help but remember them both very fondly.
Look what you’ve done Andy! 25 years later I click on another AVG video looking for some light golfing relief and I end up replaying in my mind a truly great day at Royal Dornoch GC with a great group of guys but welling up when I think of my missing mates on the 18th at the end of the day.
Andy, bravo to you and your team at the AVG, and thanks for another great video, you have a very unique style and content so good luck with the channel and keep up the good work.
    RIP Paul and John.

Sorry Hannah, it's Andy A this weeks photo. Good to see you at one of your bucket list golf courses Andy. What a golf course. Simply stunning from every angle. The digs too, you can see they cater for the USA golf market, a number of steps above compared to the usual hotels or B&B's, no disrespect to anyone in the hostelry business, but quality like that comes at a price. Not for the faint-hearted, I bet. Another boss video Andy and Hannah, more quality scenery, top drawer.
Andy, travelling up there in the winter, is always a huge gamble, I speak from the frightening experience of a close call, nearly being trapped in deep snow, lucky for me, the land rovers 4 wheel drive, is better equipped than most vehicles out there, to get out of some problems, but not all, icy snow is dangerous for everyone, even with 4x4 traction. We had blankets etc, but not equipped to stay in deep drifting snow for days, we could have been buried in a snow drift, somewhere, had we carried on.
Luckily, as snow began falling in England, getting deeper by the hour, we listened to the alerts, on the radio, at each stage, they were warning of roads ahead possibly being closed, but nothing concrete, but they later stated that there was an even worse weather front, full of snow, coming in. The trip home was rather hair- raising, snow had fallen almost the entire journey home, with snow ploughs and gritters trying to keep motorways open, we arrived home, shaken but safe. Having driven over 100,000 miles a year for a number of years, this was a close one.
To prove that we had been careful, we had checked the forecast the day before, and as we yhome that day. Nothing to worry about, maybe a light dusting of snow, but it was nothing like the one that hit us, as a huge Siberian cold front rushed into a warmer wetter front, lots of snow and ice, with strong winds, recipe for disaster. MET office do get it wrong, sometimes, luckily we stopped before going too far into the wilderness, but still a close enough call to thank our lucky stars.
It was later deemed dangerous for over a week, with many roads completely closed, impassible. We went back when the weather improved, with NO snow reported all week, safer to do it later, rather than risk the dangers that lay ahead that night. Summer golf is easy, winter golf in the highlands, requires careful planning, and even then, there are no guarantees, as we found out.
As Robert the Bruce's adapted words mentioned Andy, the best laid plans of mice and men, often go awry, seeing as you were up in the highlands, very poignant. You struck lucky under the circumstances, being caught up there in very rough weather, is something we cannot trust to fate. Luv to all. Thanks again for the content, Andy and Hannah.

Oh the joys of winter links golf. Low sun, long shadows and hip flask at the ready. Looks like you were awe struck on one of the great natural links so well worth the arduous journey. BTW mats are essential to protect the turf when there is no growth and divot mix won't take. They're fine to play off I've been doing it for years, beats muddy fairways. I've had the pleasure of playing Royal Dornoch in 2016 and 2019 both rounds in July with much nicer weather than you had. 8-) I played it while it was still under £200 to play too. Golf is getting very dear these days to play these top courses.
Royal Dornoch is my favourite "hard" course to play, but yet you end up feeling that it is also a fair one too. It is a bit of a haul to get to, as Andy shows, but it is well worth the journey.
Remember while you're in Dornoch to get the haggis at Southerland House, visit Castle Close Antiques, and enjoy some Indian food at Highland Spice.

Amazing beauty! I had the good fortune of attending the 2014 US Open at Pinehurst #2 and i can see where Dornach had influence on Ross but the seascape on Dornach is unlike any I've ever seen... Even Pebble Beach is a distant second to the grandeur of the most beautiful Scottish course ever!🙂 Question sir: Why haven't they held an Open at this wonderous track?

I would assume infrastructure, space for grandstands etc otherwise this would be on the rota

Been lucky to have been a member for nearly 30 yrs. You might have mentioned ‘Foxy’ the 14th hole, that is the hardest, but most exciting par 4.

Beautiful course Andy you and Hannah have captured it well. I would love to play it. Amazing you went through that weather and were able to have the conditions you had. Currently about a 2cm snow covering here in my bit of Canada.😢. Andy B wins for me.

I plays Donald Ross designed golf courses here in North Carolina USA. It’s a 2 1/2 hour drive to Pinehurst. Ross designed Stryker Golf in Fayetteville, North Carolina. It’s an hour drive away from me. It needs restoration but the raised (false front greens are still a factor on that course). Mid Pines Golf near Pinehurst has a definite Ross design.

since you have played courses Donald Ross learned from and was inspired by, a trip to play his designed courses in the US would make a good segment.
