Pedro Rodriguez was a masterful driver and in the rain he was unbeatable. His exploits in the Porsche 917 at Spa are the stuff of legend. He is missed…. R.I.P. Pedro.

I too, was there on that day, as an 12yr old, with my family. We always sat up on Clay Hill. Great views of Knicker Brook. Still following F1 to this day, and still reminisce about all the famous drivers I saw in the late 1960's and early '70s. Thanks for showing us the film.

More than that, Nigel Roebuck compared Pedro with Senna. In his odd drivers with Ferrari in their most dismal season 1969 , 1973 was almost as bad it not due to the problem in 1969 of lack of money and the obsolete engines. But in the one off drives on the British GP and in the 312 open G6 Ferrari at Spa 1000km , Rodriquez looked the team leader.

This was the first motor race I ever attended and was immediately hooked. I recall trying to get a photo of the turbine Lotus from the bridge at the circuit entrance, because I liked the look of the heat haze behind it. Trouble was, I couldn't hear the darn thing coming from behind me and so missed every time!

I saw Pedro drive F1 and Sports cars; I've seen Perez drive F1 - Perez isn't anywhere near in the same league as Pedro. Pedro lapped Spa (the old, full fat circuit) in a Porsche 917 in the pouring rain, 10 seconds faster than the then (dry track) F1 lap record. 10 whole seconds.

Pedro was incredible, but Ricardo seemed even more promising. I would’ve loved to see him getting bigger and bigger in motorsports and probably top the talent of his brother

There's only one Pedro Rodriguez, no comparison possible between Pedro and Perez really. Pedro competed in about every category of motor racing and in a different era. Cars were different, driving on dangerous tracks with no driver protection etc. etc.

Also regarded as one of the best drivers in the rain. One could only wonder what he achievements would have been had it all come together (of getting a competitive F1 car).

Rodriquez was the most underated driver of all in the late 1960s. For the 67-70 period leaving aside Clark. Stewart is far best and as a fast consistent all round talent only Surtees is in the same ball park. The ageing Surtees and Gurney are far better than NZ ers Hulme and McLaren. In the early 1960s Bruce McLaren was a top performer, but like Chris Amon lacked the necessary aggression.
Real motor racing pre 1985 was not just about being a good tester Ickx, Hailwood and Peterson were hopeless in that area. But Jackie and Hailwood were sensible enough to leave it entirely to the team.. Ronnie wasn't which is why Chapman lost faith and actually preferred Ickx.
Then motor racing was about dueling and passing on the track. And Amons inadequacy in that way were apparent from early during 1967 and at Warwick's Farm in 68.
Rodriquez form in the underpowered P133 at Jarama, Spa, Rouen and Holland in 68 to me showed Pedro was in some ways the best in the world after Clark. Having wide boy Jackie Oliver as team mate in 1970 was a problem as for once Oliver Stanley was right, Jackie Oliver was a good driver, but not nearly as good as Oliver himself thought. Oliver pinched the car prepared for Rodriquez about half an hour before the 1970 Dutch and British GP with a little help from Me Stewart. Had Rodriquez had his No 1 BRM on those days I think his cat like lightness and speed might have brought the P153 to the finish ahead of Jochen Ridnt and made him champion. Rodriquez was a truly great driver, denied the best cars by outright racism by Stanley, Stewart, Imperial Tobacco and other cosmetic functionaries.

The BBC coverage actually showed the one mistake when Rodriguez slid wide at the hairpin. IIRC that week's "Autosport" had a picture of Pedro talking to Raymond Mays or Sir Alfred Owen, I forget which, claiming that he is explaining his off to the boss.
BTW, the commentary here is wrong. Rodriguez did not win another Grand Prix before his death. His two wins were Kyalami, 1967 and Spa 1970.

I would love to see Pedro competing against Max Vesrtappen, with all due respect to our beloved "Checo Perez". Of course, my fantasy. Greetings from Mexico.
