    FunFact: Back in the 1500s around Shakespeare's time, the Elizabethan Era, women were not allowed to act so all the women roles were done by Boys that had not hit puberty, including Juliet.

    I have read the comments and no one seems to understand why the costumes are so modern. The director decided to take this play and modernize it. Many directors do this to give people a new perspective on the play. They want to express the beauty of this play as timeless and location-less.

    My high school is doing this play and the auditions already happened but we haven’t got the cast list yet, so I decided to watch this to get a better view on the play. And to the people saying that the clothes are too modern, many directors that do this play decide to modernize it, which I’m assuming they did with this one. Anyway, really good acting and it really helped me learn the characters

    Good work
    An example for young actors
    What a pity that the microphones picked the footsteps overwhelmingly and that the reverberating echo made the actors lines sometimes difficult to hear.
    Otherwise, bravo ! I would travel to Providence to see the play if it were acted once again

    Honestly, those of you saying "I didn't know the boys-as-girls thing," or far worse, "that's gay" (troll) -- did you pay even two seconds of attention in junior high or high school or even college? I am a college literature prof, and I teach Medieval and Renaissance era literature and drama. My students ALWAYS know a few facts when we begin Shakespeare--Elizabethan drama, and the most well-known fact is this fact exactly. They learn this when they are introduced to Shakespeare in junior high and high school and often the first play studied is Romeo & Juliet. It's mentioned/portrayed in many film versions -- see it addressed very directly in Shakespeare in Love (1998) (the entire ending scene works because of this convention). And, yeah, no it wasn't "gay." There is also a long tradition of women playing male roles in opera and on stage (see Peter Pan for one example). In the Elizabethan era, both acting and performance in music groups (traveling minstrels or troubadours) were considered very dodgy professions, and it was strongly felt that women should especially be prevented from involvement in such dodgy professions as Christian moralizing of the time argued that this public acting or singing could inspire lust in male viewers and invite inappropriate sexual attention and that an actress or singer was essentially "selling" her body to an audience. There was however increasing criticism of this practice since French drama featured actresses (and the English always loathed being behind the French with trends and culturally). By the time of Charles II, whose beautiful mistress was also a famous actress during Charles's rule, the practice was abolished. Young male singers, called trebles, were and still are used in certain standard forms of classical vocal performance such as polyphony or other types of religious musical expression. The practice was part of the culture, and must be understood on the terms of the time period. For some reason people tend to forget that we don't live at the end of all human history. We are IN history, and in 500 years our own time, and our own cultural practices and beliefs and medical science, etc etc will be judged by our ancestors. They will have their own thoughts about the ways in which some of our practices were/are "barbaric" and ignorant and/or filled with absurd superstitions. Yes -- they will absolutely find some of our beliefs to be superstitious and our practices to be barbaric -- like contemporary surgery for one example. Think where and what it was 500 years ago vs what it is now. We must remember that when we judge the past so harshly without thinking about how people then understood their world that we do an unfairness to them and to ourselves. It inhibits our understanding.

    • @Chocolatesonnet
      @Chocolatesonnet 2 роки тому

      You are absolutely correct, but our descendents will judge our actions culture and practices 500 years from now (if humanity is still around then) not our ancestors.

And Juliet was really good especially in her first scene. But my favorite has to be Mercutio in this version, RAWR😸 Other than that, the set was so on point and I like the whole thing❤️❤️💖

      Koori Kae It's common for productions of Shakespeare, whether amateur or professional, to cut portions of the text. Modern audiences don't always have the concentration to watch an uncut script; likewise, theaters don't always have actors with enough training, talent, or experience to make a full production work.

    Shakespeare would never use the "You" form when someone is talking to someone with anger or spite. When Tybalt says "Turn, Benvolio, and look upon your death" and "as I hate hell, all Montagues, and you" it just sounds wrong! I don't understand the change.

    I understand modernizing the show, but the costumes don't have a cohesive theme. Romeo looks medieval, juliet looks 2010s punk rock, friar laurence looks 1970s. And what is the set. If this was my introduction to romeo and juliet I would have no idea where or when the story was set.
