For LTK I had to go with my Mum because it was a 15 and I was only 14 so she took me so she could lie about my age if necessary. After that I’ve seen every film on opening day.
Excellent run through of the Bond films Martin. You must be one of the few people that put Timothy Dalton as their favourite Bond. I haven't seen them all but my favourites would include The Spy Who Loved Me, Goldfinger and Live and Let Die
Nice video, very enjoyable to watch. I’m a 40+ year fan, I just did another rewatch of all the films (Last was in 2010). These are my ratings (yours are in parenthesis) I wrote notes on some of the films that were far apart on. 1. The Spy who loved me (13) It’s rare that I don’t see this or FRWL in the top 5 on other people’s list. If someone has never seen JB I suggest they watch FRWL first and this second. I think these two movies epitomize JB. 2. From Russia With Love (3) 3. Skyfall (6) 4. License to Kill (2) 5. Goldeneye (9) 6. A View to a Kill (21) I get the faults of this film but each time I watch it I enjoy it more and more. This is a classic Bond movie, great opening scene and final scene, nice locales, menacing villain, etc. It has two of the most intense scenes in any Bond Film in it. 7. Live and Let Die (14) 8. Thunderball (16) I think this Connery’s best acted film. 9. The world is Not Enough (7) 10. Dr. No (11) 11. Die Another Day (17) - The first half of this film is the best Bond film ever made (9.5 stars). Yes it goes off the rails (5 stars) but the hate it receives is not merited. (7.5 stars average) 12. Octopussy (22) A fun but campy film with some great elements in it. 13. For Your Eyes Only (10) 14. Diamonds are Forever (18) This is good film that showcases 70’s Las Vegas, this film could only be made in Las Vegas and besides Connery is so enjoyable to watch in it because he is just having fun. 15. On Her Majesty’s Secret Service (1) I would have liked to see Lazenby do more films but this movie is great in parts and just so-so in parts for me. It’s always ranked in the middle. 16. The Living Daylights (5) This film seems to choppy with scenes just thrown in ad hoc. 17. Goldfinger (20) I used to rate this higher but each rewatch it drops, It’s slow paced (golf isn’t exactly exciting), the plot holes are immense. It also suffers that it is sandwiched between FRWL (Connery’s best film) and TB (Connery’s best acting) 18. Casino Royale (4) This is a decent Action/super-hero movie, highly predictable, but it’s not bond. Craig comes off as a dumbed-down brutish Jason Borne with mental stability issues. He would never be able to pass the tests to be a 00 (I know they tried to gloss over this later but it didn’t fly). Just like Goldfinger, poker for 30 minutes isn’t exactly exciting so let’s drug him (everyone saw that coming but it makes no sense). Plus rewatch it, Vesper’s character only makes sense if she is a double agent working against Bond (or she is just incredibly dumb). I didn’t find much chemistry between them and her death was comical unrealistic. 19. Tomorrow Never Dies (12) 20. You only live twice (15) 21. The Man with the Golden Gun (23) 22. Moonraker (19) 23. Spectre (8) Just jam the needle into his brain and put us out this misery. 24. Quantum of Solace (24) This is theonly “F” Bond film in my book.
Interesting. Out of curiosity, have you read the Fleming books? I don’t quite understand what you said about Vesper. You say her character only makes sense if she is a double agent working against Bond. She is a double agent working against Bond.
@@mpharris1999 Yes I have read the books but I haven't re-read them in at least 20 years. We might be using the term "double agent" differently. In the movie, Vesper was blackmailed into helping Quantum because they had kidnapped her boyfriend and wanted the money returned for his release. For me the term double agent means that the person is doing the spying/helping willingly. I don't find continuity in her character for either role (blackmailed or double agent) but being a active willing participant with Quantum (double agent) seems more likely considering her actions than being blackmailed.
Happy childhood memories of being allowed to stay up a bit later to watch the end of the Bond film when it was on TV. Moonraker was the first Bond film I remember being released in cinemas; I wonder if I still have my Corgi Drax Space Shuttle somewhere. I also remember the first time I saw A View to a Kill on VHS when I was a teenager and falling instantly in love with Alison Doody!
Just to let you know that the wedding present have released an album of bond theme covers, of which the sleeper collaboration from the “kiss kiss bang bang” double EP is included!!!! It’s called “not from where i’m standing” after one of their b-sides from 1988 and all proceeds go to C.A.L.M (the campaign against living miserably) which was set up by the members of New Order in memory of Ian Curtis!!!!
Good ranking. I haven't seen many of these films but I like most of what I've seen. 8: Die another day 7: A view to a kill 6: Quantum of solace 5: Spectre 4: Goldfinger 3: No time to die 2: Casino royale 1: Skyfall
@@mpharris1999 I probably will at some point. There are a few that I've seen bits of, like man with the golden gun, moonraker and goldeneye and they were decent clips.
You pinpointed precisely my only problem with OHMSS, it always annoys me that Bond and Blofeld don’t recognise one another despite You Only Live Twice. Obviously the book continuity is flipped but still! Regardless, a terrific film, a probable Top 5 for me and I think if Lazenby had stuck around for one or two more history wouldn’t have judged him so harshly. When I did my 007 rewatch recently, I gained a new level of appreciation for Dalton’s Bond, I’d never massively appreciated his two before but this time round I found myself loving them both. It’s partly why I couldn’t bring myself to rank the films themselves as I think soon as I’d get a list I’d be constantly wanting to change orders. That, plus ranking the themes instead seemed a far less stressful task! 😄 I will let you in on my all-time favourite though: it’s Casino Royale (the Craig version obviously, not that weird 60s thing!). I found it magnificent from my first viewing, I’ve never grown tired of it since, and I think Daniel just NAILED the part instantly. Like you and On Her Majesty’s, it’s not just my favourite 007 movie, it’s one of my all-time favourite films in any genre. Excellent video Martin, really enjoyed this 👍🏼
They totally changed how I saw the films. I’d watched a lot of the films as a kid but after reading the books it made me want different things from the films (not that I don’t still love the “least Fleming” films) and was why I instantly bonded with Dalton’s portrayal of the character.
By the way I forgot to mention ALL the tracks on it are either collaborations or by different bands who have ex members of The Wedding Present in them!!!!
Thanks, I am aware of the project but keep dithering over whether to get it because apart from the Sleeper track I was a bit underwhelmed by the rest of the tracks on the EP.
A very interesting take on the Bond films. I think Moonraker is my least favorite as some parts were a little silly. Connery is still my favorite Bond but I do think that Timothy Dalton is very underrated. From Russia With Love is my favorite. I have all the Bond films as well but I do not have the soundtrack for On Her Majesty's Secret Service so I will have to go back and watch it with a keener ear. Always great to hear other people's opinions. Take care Martin. ---Randy
About OHMSS: This is indeed a great movie. But as much as it has been underrated for decades, it has become more overrated in recent years. I explain: Positives: - It had amazing action scenes, especially the snow skiing scenes, but also the scenes where Bond fights are very good, - It had amazing music: The instrumentall and the song "We have all the time in the World" are some of the best compositions of the great John Barry. - It had probably the best Bondgirl in the history of the franchise. Diana Rigg in the role of Tracy is simply amazing! Her stunning performance is the ultimate highlight of the film. - It had an excellent plot. Peter Hunt followed Fleming's novel faithfully. And the love story and Tracy's death are unique… - It had a great villain. Telly Savalas has an excellent interpretation as Blofeld. Personally I have always preferred the invisible Blofeld (FRWL - Thunderball), but my second favorite is undoubtedly Savalas. Negatively: - George Lazenby is not bad in the role. For a non-actor who played for the first time in his life, he did well. But he does not seem "enough" asr Bond. His interpretation is somewhat "wooden" and his inexperience shows. Only in the action scenes he seems capable. He is somewhat "saved" by the good story and direction and the interpretations of Rigg and Savalas. - Lazenby does not "look" as Bond. He looks as tough as Connery did, but without the charm and charisma of the latter. Lazenby has a more "boyish" image that never made me "accustomed" to his appearance as Bond." - The (more than half an hour) scene at Pitz Gloria is unforgivable and completely boring for me. In it, Lazenby is badly dubbed pretending to be ... "sir Hilly". This scene destroys the whole atmosphere of the rest of the film and becomes quite blunt. It is also so boring to me that every time I see OHMSS I want to press "forward" to overtake it. In conclusion, the film has many advantages as well as disadvantages. Nevertheless, it is a pity that Lazenby did not had the opportunity to make one or two more films. I think he would get improved. We would have a proper OHMSS sequel where Bond would come as avenger of Tracy's death. And we probably would not have fallen for Bond's transformation into a "parody" with DAF and the Moore era.
I think I strongly disagree with all your negative points but hey, each to their own! Of course Lazenby did have the opportunity to make more films but he turned it down.
@@mpharris1999 It is indeed a matter of opinion and personal taste. Did you know that Connery wanted to do that film more than any other? In his interview to PLAYBOY on November 1965, Connery said that the plan was "to start On Her Majesty's Secret Service in Switzerland in January 1966”. And then stated: "But we have to be careful where we go next, because I think with Thunderball we've reached the limit as far as size and gimmicks are concerned... What is needed now is a change of course ... more attention to character and better dialogue". Sean Connery was anticipating on doing OHMSS because it was a challenge for him to act in a darker and more sensitive Bond movie. He wanted to work in depth with the evolution of Bond's character. The plot of OHMSS and the fact that Bond falls in love, gets married and his wife gets killed really intrigued Connery to play it. But then the producers decided not to proceed with OHMSS (because of some snow problems in Switzerland) but instead to make YOLT. Sean Connery was hugely disappointed. From then on he started to lose interest on the character. The problems and disagreements continued during filming YOLT in Japan and by the end of filming he declared that he would stop playing Bond. Knowing what an actor he was, Connery would have made this movie really GREAT...
Of course if it had been made after Thunderball then there is a strong chance that it would have been directed by someone other than Peter Hunt and so would have been an entirely different film.
