With all due respect I think you missed the point. Modern Western society and culture is indubitably shaped by all three Abrahamic religions, which Brooks uses their shared ancient capitol to represent.
This is an incredibly important question, personally and for communities. We're at the very beginning of collapse, the rise of world-wide fascism, and a great extinction.
David you are not the only one noticing the change in ''vibes''...I notice since taking a short job in So. Cal. that I am much more sensitive to the rage and aggressiveness on the road. There a people (men) who are making their cars into an intimidatingly loud roaring trucks and muscle cars...even civics are made into loud aggressive forward leaning vehicles. It is assaulting our abilities to remain at peace. No seems to notice the effect this has on us. It is very disturbing...and why when all we know about climate, oil, plastics, etc etc we not only continue but press down on the accelerator,. The lack of awareness is at an all time high..I am 75 and can definitely say this attitude of aggressive suggestion of violence is far beyond what it was even 10 yrs. ago. We don't enforce any laws regarding noise..none. Police never stop a motorcycle or vehicle that is booming, roaring. Now they are listening to ''music''...beats that are base only that is so powerfull I can feel it on my chest/ribs/body...it is a continual assault. Am I the only one protesting. I have mentioned it but people have no opinion..it is as if they are hypnotized and inured to it. It is sad and I want to get away from this madness. A lot of what happens in this country starts in California....so take note America this madness may well be on its way
I too have found this behavior by men regressive and aggressive and disturbing in how it has grown. There should be laws governing how others actions affect your life, liberty and pursuit of happiness.
I agree with you. I feel it everywhere. Every interaction has become a game of intimidation and dominance. I don't know how you fight it at 75, but if America still had real men, they'd fight like hell to defend our culture. We are under attack, and men like David Brooks are suggesting everyone stay home with their heads up their bums while what's left of our culture dies. Look what happened to Sweden. They were too gentle, too humane, and Sweden died, and with it, all the beauty of their gentle culture. That's the paradox. If you want peace, you have to fight. Hard.
Society in America is definitely declining a bit but i dont think you can call our times inhumane. Our lives are still better than 99% of all other generations in human existence. Like i said no doubt stuff is getting worse but compared to our ancestors these are extremely humane and hospitable times.
The tribe lies and steals land and spys on their "allies" and hacks to death innocents, and then cries out in pain when faced with criticism! Like a vampire exposed to sunlight!
How do we remain open-hearted in difficult times? You don't. You lift the drawbridge, and you fight like hell to protect your culture and your country. There's a Chinese expression called moral kidnapping, when you attack another by insisting they're doing something immoral if they don't succumb to your will. It's how Goodness loses. Don't lie down for bullies. Be courageous and fight.
Am I the only one who remembers David Brooks excusing republican behavior through the years in the New York Times? I always find it hard to understand the two Davids.
Brooks is a charlatan. He pretends to be an ethicist, but always always always lays out a hypothesis that leads people who want to be Good into doing the bidding for Evil. I've been following it for years. It's not a coincidence.
Stay a good person in personal life and business. But if you're in politics, one thing the last 8 years has taught me is to be ruthless and shameless. Use power when you have it. Have the opportunity to pass a law that will help people? Do it. Those against you will oppose you no matter what. They will lie about you no matter what, and most people will believe it. Give them a reason to believe in you, or they'll believe GOP lies. Since all that matters is perception, not the truth; manipulate, take out of context, reframe issues, etc for your side. Do not unilaterally disarm. Play dirty, because there is no reward for good behavior; only for winning. People now want to be able to say 'he's an SOB, but he's my SOB.' It should not be this way, but it is. As long as Democrats play politics with their gloves on, as long as they appear to defend the status quo instead of smart change for workers, they will continue to lose.
Thank you Mr. Brooks tears in the eye listening to this. Humaneness and gentleness are so needed.
Jerusalem being retconed into an important part of Western philosophy is very rich.

Thank you David Brooks
How do we remain open-hearted in difficult times? Important reflection.

I came across that same James Baldwin clip a few weeks ago. Powerful stuff from one of my favorite authors.
But here's what Brooks gets wrong. Baldwin was a fighter. He fought long and hard to protect Goodness. He didn't lay down for the bullies.
Thank you. Much needed reminder.
That was magnificent, David!

You miss a great story, then. Brooks has spoken intimately of the opening of his soul in later life.
He's always stayed true to his tribal alliance

You had 2 scotches and a full meal at an airport and were surprised it was 70 dollars. I don't know why anyone is taking your advice.

One word: Gaza.

Wrong message from Greeks. Didn't learn much. Right now we'd all learn from Martin Luther King. Be angry at injustice.
Leave it to this hack to pull out the old ‘Athens and Jerusalem’ cliche
Qanon?
OMG cult 😮
Ok?
Oh god, Brooks is actually doing the Ben Shapiro Athens/Jerusalem thing.
