I saw Home Alone in a packed theater back in 1990 when I was around 10. I can't tell you the energy in that room, I keep trying to find it in the cinema today but it's just not in the air. I can't describe the wave of "oh no!" just before the spider is put on his face and that release of the whole theater jumping up and screaming with him. The whole movie built up to it perfectly.
    I've never experienced it since.

"Home Alone"is for me genuine nostalgia of the best kind.
I was born in 1983 and loved this movie as a kid. I still think it is a very good movie and usually watch sometime around Christmas almost every year. About a year ago, I watched it with my then eight-year-old nephew and six-year-old niece and they laughed out loud throughout the film.
In addition, the soundtrack by John Williams on this is absolutely fantastic (available on spotify). The arrangement of "Oh Holy Night" with the children's choir is very beautiful. Usually listen to it around Christmas

I'm 27 and my sister is 35. To this day, we see this movie with our family every Christmas. It really is and has something that pleases everybody. Nostalgia now plays a big role in our choice, but no matter the age, everyone wants to see it around that time of the year. A case study

Thank you Oliver for making and uploading this retrospective/review. Marley (Roberts Blossom) is one of my favourite on-screen grandfather/grandpa character actors, along with Wilford Brimley, Jack Albertson (Grandpa Joe from Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory), and the grandpa character from The Princess Bride. The sadness in Roberts' character's eyes as Marley, and the joy in his eyes at the end of Home Alone when he is hugging his granddaughter gets me every time.

Home Alone kinda feels like a Spielberg movie. I think, that's because of Chris Columbus having been a protege of Spielberg's, and the music by John Williams.

I love John Candy. Whether Home Alone, Uncle Buck or my favorite "Planes, Trains and Automobiles" he always seems like such a kind hearted guy. I still remember being like 6 years old in 93 and watching"Cool Runnings" in the theater with my friend Darren and his sister Peggy. I haven't seen Darren in over 25 years and Peggy passed away at 8 years old. She was hit by a car while crossing the backstreet from her grandmother's home in 94. Makes me so sad especially since she would have survived but was too weak from chemotherapy.

John Candy's dream was to own the Toronto Argos, a CFL team. He owned the team with Wayne Gretzky and Mr. McNoll. John Candy ended up losing the team due to financial problems. This really hurt him and he was never the same again.

Fantastic retrospective, Oliver. It's been ages since I have seen this one but like most kids back in the early '90s, it was definitely a staple of my childhood. I've been watching a lot of reviews/retrospectives on it this month (it seems everyone has wanted to cover either this or its sequel), and it seems like the humor holds up really well.

I a lot of travelling as a kid, and as a consequence, when I think of a film or television show that I used to enjoy, I will often subconsciously think of whatever place I visited next after “discovering” it.
I will always remember the second Home Alone film as the only instance where the location that I associate it with matches the setting, since I discovered it shortly before visiting The Big Apple for real.

Siskel and Ebert gave thumbs down to Christmas Vacation (1989) and Home Alone (1990). However, most people do regard these films as Christmas classics now and watch every Christmas season.

    • @LinkMarioSamus
      @LinkMarioSamus 6 років тому +2

Die Hard wasn't actually that well-received on release. Still agree though, that's probably Ebert's dumbest review, although if you understand how Roger reviews films then it kind of makes sense.

Tom Gallagher - Second Hand Media
I used to do the same thing...until the tape wore out. Used to do "audio only" recreations of my favorite movies (with me as the only cast). That sounds pathetic, but it's what kids did in the 90's to pass the time and exert their imagination. My parents only allowed me to play video games for an allotted amount of time...so this is what I'd do during the times I wasn't allowed to play. Like you, I SO wish I had them. Good times. Thanks for the comment. Really sent me back.

    • @alucard624
      @alucard624 7 років тому +1

Smooth Steve I used one to record the audio from movies so I could listen to them in my room when I was a kid. Wasn't allowed to have video games in the house till I was older so I found other ways to entertain myself then. Good times indeed.

alucard624 HaHa. I did that too. Completely forgot about that until you mentioned it. I recorded an entire episode of the incredible hulk and used to listen to it daily. I recorded my parents arguing once, and boy...were they ever pissed when I played it for them. I thought they would've found it funny. I thought wrong. 😂

Thank you Oliver for bringing back one of the funniest movies of the 90s. Here in Chile "Home Alone" (or as it was translated "Mi Pobre Angelito" - My Poor Angel) was released for the Christmas of 1990. The movie was a huge success that stay in the cinemas for months and was a smash hit at video rentals. Although is very difficult to have a remake of these movie, one possibility could be to take a character like Kevin and put him in a small town in Latin America where he doesn't know the language and has many problems to access the Internet. Well, Merry Christmas to you and your love ones in the UK and a have happy 2018.

Fantastic review as always, mate! My only problem is however you didn't mention the late Robert Blossom was actually featured as a psychopathic killer in an 70's low-budget exploitation flick "Deranged" - that might explain why John Hughes characterized him in the movie as a recluse with mysterious (or allegedly murderous like Kevin's brothers said) past.

It's so lovely that you took the time on Christmas to do this, really is. Such a magical gem of a film, I watched the 1st and 2nd film Christmas eve, absolute timeless. I don't agree with you about Home Alone 2 though, since young I've always loved them both but the 2nd film is that little bit more special to me, I think just because it's set in dark snowy New York, I love that, always have and always will, like the latter levels of Freedom Fighters and Max Payne =)
Merry Christmas and a happy new year everybody.

I was really hoping to hear your thoughts on the wounded hand of the old man. The first face to face he has with Kevin at the store his hand is wrapped and bloody. At the end, he waves that same hand to Kevin, (@24:02) and the bandage is gone with the wound fully healed. I've always associated it with a metaphor about healing wounds (both characters and their families) and the old man being Kevin's savior (Jesus was nailed to the cross to save mankind, the old man saves Kevin at the end).

19:12 John Connor in T2 is a more similar character to Bart Simpson (the definitive generation X brat) also HA2 is underrated it was very hyped in 1992 and quite successful.Denis the Menace was intended for M.Culcin but he was too old in 1993 12-13 years old and I believe HA copied a lot from the cartoon ...the funniest rumor I have ever heard is that Mel Gibson was considering Macauly Culcin as Jesus Christ in the Passion of the Christ that would be so weird(Daniel Day Lewis was considered too).Joe Pesci's transformation in this is incredible compared to Goodfellas that also came out in 1990

Fun Fact: Daniel Stern’s scream was performed later. In the shot, he acted the scream without the actual noise, so that they wouldn’t scare the spider away.

Totally agree with the spider part.... gets me every-time. One of the best comedy moments in film!

Lazenby-syndrome = being ungrateful for show biz luck and turning stuck up , something Portman suffers from imo

Instead of being grateful for 007 , Lazenby acted like it was beneath him when others wouldve killed for the same chance

One of the best Xmas comedy movies ever made imo. It became a staple of Xmas TV as the 90's progressed. Macaulay Culkin played the part well and was perfect for it but it's the duo between Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern that makes it such a great movie and one that still holds up to this day. I think the problem with the sequel is that it's just more of the same but taken to higher levels. It's not a bad movie but it kinda drags on like you say. The first movie had the advantage of it being a first.

Finally went by the house on Christmas day, and took pictures in front of it. P.s. Fun Fact: I use to live few block from the place where they shot baseball scene for Richie Rich and saw briefly Macaulay Culkin.

The boy who played Kevin's cousin Fuller is Macaulay Culkin's brother Kieran.
Macaulay Culkin drew the map that his character uses to set up the traps.
Macaulay Culkin's stunt double was a very short 30-year-old man.
Director Chris Columbus' biggest fear as a kid was burglars. It's part of why he wanted to make this movie
At the end of the movie where it snows outside Kevin's house, the snow was actually mashed potato flakes.
Little Nero's Pizza is a parody of Little Caesar's Pizza. Caesar and Nero are famous names in Roman history.
The ornaments on which Marv steps were actually candy.

I had seen Home Alone and Home Alone 2 from 1993 to 2012, every Christmas until TV Networks stop it doing reruns, because I not watch TV anymore, I still don't known if they are still doing more reruns.
