Even though Zun openly admitted that he didn't get a proper/traditional training in music like some other video game composers like Uematsu/Mitsuda/Soule, the PCB soundtrack firmly cemented him in our minds as one of Gaming's Great Composers.
At almost 2 decades old, this is still one of my favorite game soundtracks of all time. The tunes are immaculate and endlessly remix-able, there isn't a single bad song, and most of the tracks on here have become pretty much iconic. It's elegant, it's emotional, and it captures the exact vibe of the first cherry blossoms overcoming the coldness of the retreating winter to make way for springtime.
2000s was honestly the doujin era. Everything you needed to make anything was ready for you. Everything compatible with Windows 2000 and XP. Touhou is the greatest example of this. If the internet was as centralized as it is today, nobody (who speaks english) would know what the hell Touhou is.
Not really. As someone who's been gaming since the 90s and into game development as of late, there's absolutely no better nor bigger time to doujin/indie than now. Indie has been on the spotlight for around a decade now. ZUN just happened to have been making Touhou games for at least seven years up to this point - he made the first five games on much older, lower level hardware.
@@SpiralPegasus A big thing that helped Touhou was word of mouth and close knit communities, which doesn't really exist anymore. In some interviews ZUN himself has said Touhou probably only got big because of the time it came out and how the internet and online communities were exploding. There were websites for everything. Now in this age where everything is run off algorithms, social media and clicks, only the big name indies which reviewers and youtubers highlight blow up, while word of mouth and communities don't exist anymore. Forums basically don't exist, and discord servers only capture a fraction of what communities back in the day used to be. Games like Hollow Knight, Undertale, Hades etc only blow up because 100m subscriber youtubers and kotaku makes content about them. 90% of indies nowadays are barely heard of or talked about and get like 2000 total steam downloads. Necrofantasy and Necrofantasia are the same song, but that's not a bad thing. Necrofantasia has all those high pitched synths that pierce through your brain though.
That's actually a really clever trick, you warm up the melodies in the player's brain without annoying them, only to use them in the bossfight with their full potential. Familiar sounds are always more enjoyable than completely new ones.
4 new PCs later, this is the first game I always bring over from a trusty ol' USB key. What a timeless classic, gameplay, addictive bullet hell and these rockin' tunes. Hope this stays uploaded for everyone to listen and enjoy!
To this day, many of the songs from 7 are some of my favorite pieces of music. Absolutely fantastic stuff Stage 1 is an amazing "start of journey" song, and the way that Stage 4 is set up so that the song loops as you finish the stage and get some calm before the boss fight is beautiful.
This music makes me feel like a kid again, when my brother first showed me touhou (it was my introduction to japanese culture in general) and it opened the whole world for me. This entire OST is absolutely beautiful, but I have yet to find any other song that has made me feel quite the same way that Japanize Dream does. By far my favourite from the OST, and maybe my favourite from any of the games.

I know it's gonna sound "something-cist" but it may be because he is Japanese so it's also like in him the feeling he gave to this perfect music
