Really enjoyed this one - While I've heard plenty of the classics, I'm still decently new-ish to really delving in and there are still so many classics I've never listened to (Megadeth, Slayer, Anthrax, so many others). A video like this that covers the 'basics' was very helpful.
Personally, i would replace Paranoid with Master of Reality & Master of Puppets with Ride the Lightning. Poison isn't really my thing, so i wouldn't include them, but also because the word metal doesn't immediately spring to mind when i think of their music. Thanks for sharing your picks, Brendon.
Brendon, You nailed it with this list, period! Like you read my mind! Especially picking South of Heaven from Slayer as it was a fabulous album and my favorite Slayer album! Just right amount of production to refine them into peak form. Poison I love all their albums so I definitely think they need to be in this list as their are kind of the top of the pile of Glam Metal. I don't consider Motley Crue as Glam except their one album, Theater of Pain. What a let down after Shout of the Devil and Too Fast for Love. Which either could be added to this list as "Mainstream Metal"?
Great picks. My favorites are: Traditional Metal: Deep Purple - In Rock NWOBHM: Judas Priest - British Steel Thrash Metal: Exodus - Bonded By Blood Speed Metal: Helloween - Walls of Jericho Glam Metal: Skid Row - Slave To The Grind
You are 100% correct, Brendon. Because I am that guy who’s all-time favourite *Black Sabbath* release is there debut. As is the exact same case with *Iron Maiden* as well.
Cool selection! Totally agree with you on Black Sabbath - Paranoid, this album simply has most of the iconic songs that define future "Metal". I would add Faith No More - Angel Dust or Real Thing for funk-metal also called crossover-(metal). I'm pretty shure as a Faith no More fan, you'll agree ;)
Great picks. I like how you were not afraid to put Poison on there. That album came out right after my senior year. Lot's of great memories for me with that one. I'm sure you'll get pushback on that, but for many of us the lines are blurred and music is much more enjoyable not being myopic about it.

Great list, South of Heaven is my favourite Slayer album , KEA my favourite Metallica album but Master is a classic. Can’t go wrong with Sabbaths Paranoid , my favourite NWOBHM album would be Motörhead Overkill , but love Maiden. Glam isn’t my favourite metal genre but would pick Quiet Riot’s Metal Health.
Accept has been documented to be the band with the first thrash metal song with fast as a shark but I guess the whole album wasn’t thrash. To me Judas Priest was probably the premiere metal outfit going way back before maiden but that’s just my personal opinion. Instead of Black Sabbath I would say deep purple in rock was really heavy for the time
Priest's songwriting always had A LOT more variety than Maiden. Steve in particular used that same E-C-D chord progression a bit too much IMO. But hey, at least Maiden songs were much easier to learn on the guitar when everything was so similar and predictable.
The song Fast as A Shark, which is not Thrash, came out in 1982. Bands like Metallica which formed in 1981 were already playing Thrash, real Thrash, before Accept released the song Fast As A Shark. And as the other commenter pointed out Judas Priest did more for Thrash than Accept. I wouldn’t consider Accept having done anything to influence Thrash. But that’s just my opinion and you’re entitled to yours.
You nailed it with Piece of Mind. A lot of people shake their head at me when I tell them I like Piece of Mind, Somewhere in Time and 7th son of a 7th son over NUMBER. Seventh son is a very underrated album. As far as the thrash choice, I'd switch Ride the Lightning with Master. Glam metal.......Poison isn't close for me. I like Open up and say ahh better but still no Poison record should be #1 of the glam metal list. For me, Glam metal would be Skid Row debut, Bon Jovi-Slippery, Def Leppard, Whitesnake or probably I'm going with Ratt-Out of the Cellar.
I've always found 7th son boring, "too soft" and synth heavy. Somewhere in time was the last great album of that classic run IMO. I 100% agree with Piece of mind over Number of the beast though.
My personal opinion is out with the Poison and in with Judas Priest "Unleashed In The East ". To me, that is more of a perfect little package of Metal dynamite, top to bottom, front to back. 🤘
Traditional Metal: Master of Reality (This one hits harder for me and it's the album I think of when I think of Trad. Metal) NWOBHM: Iron Maiden - Iron Maiden (I went with the debut because I feel like one of the key characteristics of NWOBHM is low budget productions) Thrash Metal: Metallica - Master of Puppets (Head and shoulders over the rest) Speed Metal: Exciter - Heavy Metal Maniac (I didn't go that hard into speed metal but, this would be my choice) Glam Metal: Motley Crue - Too Fast for Love (This may be the album that launched the genre)
Traditional metal - Black Sabbath- Paranoid Nwobhm - Iron Maiden - The number of the beast Thrash - Metallica- Ride the lightning Speed - Slayer - Reign in blood Glam - Mõtley Crüe - Too fast for love
I was surprised to hear what you mentioned about Master of Puppets selling 1 million copies when it came out. For some reason I always thought Metallica didn’t start selling albums in the millions until the Black album came out.
Yeah I don’t think most people know they were able to achieve that so early in their career but it goes to show you it wasn’t a right place at the right time effect like with the Black Album. They were popular before and successful with both Master Of Puppets and And Justice For All long before the Black Album. It’s just The Black Album gets all the notoriety due to the sheer number of sales it’s done and being the largest selling Metal Album.
Hi Brendan, interesting picks, Poison was an eyebrow raiser though, wouldn't call them a metal band... I actually like a lot of glam/hair metal, but was never a big fan of Poison, although the debut was fun, disposable pop rock. For what its worth, my 5 defining "moments" on my metal journey were... Poison is “Glam Metal” that’s a fact. They are one of the originators of it. The term “Hair Metal” or “Hair Band” came after the movement and is not a genre of music.
In 1970 nobody ever heard of "metal". That is something the media found out later. The music of Black Sabbath was simply called progressive music [nothing to see with the actual prog].
True. I believe the word "heavy" was certainly used to describe Sabbath straight away (I mean how could it not in 1970) rather than progressive. Could be wrong though.
Hey Brendon…always enjoy the thoughtful effort on your picks. I was hoping to hear thoughts on my favorite genre…progressive metal. TOOL is really taking this to another level. Also anxious for new DT. Some might debate Metallica and Slayer are considered Thrash as 2 of the big 4…nothing wrong with showcasing them both.
…I did say in the video that they’re only “Metal” in name. The term “Glam Metal” is a bit of a misnomer as most of the bands are not “Metal” at all. They are at the opposite end of the spectrum. Hence the reason I said the term “Metal” can mean so many things. So whether you’re arguing or not, you’re just saying what I already said. So really you agree with me. 👍
Good choices. For Slayer I'd pick 'Seasons in the Abyss' as the "best" if not necessarily my favorite. My choices for "best" metal albums would probably be Opeth's 'Blackwater Park' and 'Ghost Reveries'. The only times I've ever felt incredible jealousy over someone's songwriting ability. Probably not your cup of tea though.
I agree, i would definitely include Opeth's Blackwater Park as a representative of modern influential metal album. Althought Ghost Reveries is my favourite by them.
@@michaj4372 right on. I usually don't even like growls much, but the music is so incredible I simply had to get over it. I think Opeth's run from 'Still Life' up to 'Watershed' is pretty damn impressive overall.
@@arto2533 As someone who has been listening to death metal for almost 30 years, Mikael's growls never bothered me but I understand what you mean. I was like that with Enslaved. I was never into the black metal style of vocal delivery or even black metal in general but discovering Enslaved changed that. If you're unfamiliar with them they're essentially the black metal version of Opeth.
@@LurchyScott most growled vocals still sound really comical to me, especially the black metal shrieking. Mikael used to have great "demonic" lower end though so I can deal with that as long as the music is so great. For some reason I also dig both girl vocalists of Arch Enemy, but that's still about it for me when it comes to growling, unless you count Joe from Gojira as a growler. I'll check out Enslaved for sure. Thanks for the recommendation!
I know that a genre is simply an opinion. Metal, Hard rock......I think they are very similar. But as far as your list, I think it's pretty accurate and I agree. I don't think any of the bands that were sleaze, hair or glam should be considered metal. These are just hard rock or party rock bands and some of them are even Pop Rock. I hate labeling those bands hair metal. I also consider Slayer as death metal. To me, speed metal and death metal kind of fall into the same genre. It's one of the most difficult genres to label. Thrash, speed and death are all very similar And I think what separates them is their theme. So for me, Metallica is more speed or thrash. Slayer because of their themes fit more into death metal. But it's all so difficult to label. Good choices though. For "glam metal", I find Poison, Flesh & Blood to not even be in my Top 50 for Glam or Hair bands. I like Open Up and Say Ahh a lot better and it's not even close for me. But the best thing about rating albums is that we all get to have an opinion. I respect yours.

Great picks. Personally, I would never choose anything from bands like Poison, Ratt or Mötley Crüe. For me, glam has no soul. It's nothing more than 80's commercialism. Here's my 5 best albums: - Heavy metal: Judas Priest - Victim of Changes - NWOBHM (more of a movement than a genre): Saxon - Strong Arm of the Law - Thrash metal: Metallica - Ride the Lightning - Speed metal: Raven - Wiped Out - Black metal: Venom - Black Metal
I like your choices but I never was a fan of hair metal / glam metal sorry. My choice would be progressive metal with Train of Tought from Dream Theater.
You can omit “Glam Metal” but the genre still exists. The point of the series is to cover all the different genres under the more general term. So the next episode might have Power Metal, Symphonic Metal, Progressive Metal, Christian Metal, and Neo-classical Metal.
Poison's front album cover for "Look What The Cat Dragged In" was certainly cringy, back in the day. The band's most popular heyday still reminds me of Culture Club. Unlike Kiss or early Motley Crue, the chick make up and hairspray image was a complete no no. I never liked Poison, and they could never realistically be called metal, in my book. Poison were basically a glorified chick band like Bon Jovi, but even more annoying. As for Metallica's "Master Of Puppets" album, with me, "Ride The Lightening" was a way better release. All Iron Maiden albums were great, but "Piece Of Mind" was definitely an incredible recording for the band. It helped them move forward into the eighties. Black Sabbath's "Paranoid" and Deep Purple "In Rock" are early groundbreakers for what would be known as Heavy Metal. I think the term stoner rock was used then, which included such acts as Cream, Jimi Hendrix, Blue Cheer and even Led Zeppelin.
@@BrendonSnyder I like glam, like GNR, Britny Fox and even LA Guns, but Poison was more like commercial poser hard rock, manufactured to appeal to chicks by a band that cross dressed. There is nothing wrong with having female fans. Like Bon Jovi, Poison just wasn't what I was ever into, Guys with long hair, should still be manly. The girly make up and beauty parlor hair they wore was over the top, plus the music was well below the greatness of Cinderella, who really recorded superior material. Poison was even more annoying because they were popular. To me, they were a rock n roll Culture Club. Some chicks liked Boy George as well. Poison recorded a cover of "Your Mama Can't Dance." That is not metal by any means.
i bought Paranoid for the first time recently…pretty good but Pantera’s version of Planet Caravan is way better…Ozzy’s vocals are so quiet on the original
@@BrendonSnyder I am not saying glam is bad. It just isn't metal. Might as well say Aerosmith is metal. I don't understand your Raven point. Venom is a NWOBH band. That doesn't mean they aren't an early black metal band.
Aerosmith is not “Glam Metal” so I wouldn’t call them “Metal”. But Poison is “Glam Metal” so they are “Metal”. I hear your point and if you paid attention in the video I said that most Glam Metal bands are in name only and not really Metal sounding. But it doesn’t change the fact that they are a “Glam Metal” band. It’s not called “Glam” it’s not called “Glam Rock”, it’s not called “Hair Bands”, it’s Glam Metal. Therefore that’s why it was included as a category. As for Raven, they’re not Speed Metal they’re NWOBHM. You used that as a reference in your previous comment to try and contradict a statement I made so I was clarifying their genre for you. 👍
@BrendonSnyder Well, we just agree to disagree. I have been a metal head most of my life. The whole sub-genre thing drives me crazy. Doom, funeral doom, math core. Utterly ridiculous. For me it's two categories metal not metal. Keep it simple. All that said I do like your videos. Nothing like a good debate.

WTF!?
Great picks. Personally, I would never choose anything from bands like Poison, Ratt or Mötley Crüe. For me, glam has no soul. It's nothing more than 80's commercialism.
Here's my 5 best albums:
- Heavy metal: Judas Priest - Victim of Changes
- NWOBHM (more of a movement than a genre): Saxon - Strong Arm of the Law
- Thrash metal: Metallica - Ride the Lightning
- Speed metal: Raven - Wiped Out
- Black metal: Venom - Black Metal
Glam Metal is still Metal. It’s just one of the many sub-genres whether you like it or not. And who doesn’t want chicks at their concerts?!
Best album of the 'Progressive Death Metal with electronic voices new age religion movement' goes to Cynic: Focus 😁
That’s one heck of a genre name 😂
Saying that Poison is metal is like saying that Madonna is metal!😂😂
Poison is Glam Metal and thereby they’re part of Metal. No question about it. 🤦♂️
Poison?!?! Your fucking kidding me! Nothing those posers released is worthy!
I disagree with every pick. BTW South of Heaven was hardly speed metal. They slowed it down extremely.
The band is still Speed Metal regardless. That’s like saying Metallica isn’t Thrash because of Load & ReLoad which were hard rock.
Slayer was thrash. Exciter was speed. @@BrendonSnyder
i bought Paranoid for the first time recently…pretty good but Pantera’s version of Planet Caravan is way better…Ozzy’s vocals are so quiet on the original
Now that's a hot take...!
Poison? I'm out!!
It’s still Metal. 🤷♂️
it was all cool until you talked about poison... I love poison but it's not metal.. u.u
No, speed metal is Exciter and Raven. Glam is not metal. No way on any plain of existence should Sabbath and Slayer be mentioned with Poison.
Raven is NWOBHM. Glam Metal is “Metal”….hence the name. This is a discussion about ALL types of Metal and not just the Metal you like or deem good. 👍

I am not saying glam is bad.
@BrendonSnyder
Well, we just agree to disagree. I have been a metal head most of my life. The whole sub-genre thing drives me crazy. Doom, funeral doom, math core. Utterly ridiculous. For me it's two categories metal not metal. Keep it simple. All that said I do like your videos. Nothing like a good debate.
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Black sabbath were progressive rock music, imo not metal
Poison isn't metal.
But they are “Glam” Metal….so they are Metal and fall under this genre as for as the episode is concerned.
@@BrendonSnyder I like your channel. I'm just picking on you a little 😁
