I didn’t think of it as that, but that also sort of makes sense. I personally see it as a close platonic relationship that got broken apart, so similar to lovers to enemies but platonic:0
Everyone is saying this reminds them of a romantic relationship, but I really see this as a platonic or sibling relationship. Not really a bad one, for either, but really noticing it’s breaking apart. Maybe from a misunderstanding or another problem in communication. The area where you aren’t really sure if they consider you a friend anymore, y’know? That’s how I personally relate to it at least.
holy... I feel so called out here. I feel like my twin, someone I should trust to the ends of the world, is slowly ruining everything I love, even if she doesn't know it, and I feel I am loosing my friends in the process.
A lot of people keep saying this is supposed to be for a romantic relationship, some say it's for a sibling relationship, others think differently, so on and so forth. But I feel as if this is a song that can be applied to _ANY_ one relationship that's troublesome, breaking apart or at a divide of some sorts, and that's the flexibility of it that I like so much.
@@doordonut-.-281 Yeah I kind of agree with you, though mostly because of the lines ”Remember when I could tell you not to smile when you were mad? And you would always crack, and we’d both be laughing in the end...” because they seem to have had fun together before and just not anymore. But maybe it could still be lovers to enemies and then back to lovers because they still seem to care about each other!
I always interpreted the song as lovers to enemies, just because it uses a lot of past tense and sentimental lines, like the ones we’ve discussed here, but also “do we have another go” and such.
I do really like the lovers to enemies idea BUT hear me out Father daughter relationship where the daughter slowly starts realising that her father wasn't so kind and amazing as she always forced herself to believe, and now she doesn't know what to do with herself.
i think of this song as 2 siblings who used to be close as kids but as they've grown up they've become, well, enemies and one of them- the younger one- wants to be done with the other for all they've put them through but the other, older and mature one, wants to make things right but isn't sure how, because of course neither can remember why they even started fighting but neither is willing to give up the fight, for the younger its because that'd be letting the other *win* as they've always been winning since they were kids, and for the older because they know the younger would never truly forgive them, but the older one is willing to do anything for the younger to love them again of course the younger one always just wanted to be loved by them so eventually the older one just... gives up. the younger one 'wins' but it's bittersweet. and now there's no way for them to be as close as they used to be, after all of this. *are we allies? or enemies?* that might just be me projecting ^^
I like to interpret this song as two people who've known each other for the longest time, and have a close bond, until their relationship falls apart and they are forced to go against each other, despite one of them not wanting to, bc of their past bond/relationship, like they use to be siblings or partners or friends.
Out of all the songs I have heard, I think this captures the feeling of watching your best friend from elementary school move on without you in high school the most
I used to do dry land dog sledding way back in 2017. Oh how I needed this type of music to listen to as I go speeding at 30 odd kilometres per hour through the pine forests behind my racing partner and best friend Trixie, my heeler dog who would pull the sled so well I hardly had to do anything... I miss that.

Just found you guys on New Year's Day this year and 5 months later The Crane Wives are my new favorite band and I consider y'all an inspiration as an aspiring musician
This song to me repersents the relationship between myself and my mind. I am my worst enemy. Specifically the line, "sometimes I just can't help myself at all" All I know is this song means alot to me and alot of other people.
This song reminds me of a toxic friendship I had. I was the problem. At some point I got angry, then blocked them on Instagram. Then, they blocked me on everything. We haven't spoken since. My biggest regret in life was being a terrible friend. I sometimes miss the times we had.
Everyone has jumped onto the sibling bandwagon, but I can't help but see this song being the relationship of a mother and a daughter, a loving one that just got worn down with growing up and that "leaving the nest" phase, where a mom gets overprotective and more overbearing the more she sees her daughter growing up, and how that sudden change can cause arguments and further separation, yada yada.
As fun and silly as it sounds to me to analyze this song from a romance trope perspective I think it's reductive to the greater narrative of the album and all of CW early works since they also kinda connect in a similar way. Coyote in mythology are often tricksters that spin tales with lessons shrouded in metaphors, see song metaphor from the same album if you don't believe me. CW albums often touch of relationships, mostly in one's 20s since this was their age around the time the started the band, Coyote stories seems to be from a less experienced point of view and features anxiety as a core theme. Allies or enemies to me seems like a way someone with anxious attachment would view a disagreement in a relationship, not in a nuanced way but a clear black&white way.
I love how everyone claims everyone thinks this is a enemies to lovers song and how they see it as platonic as if they're all that unusual in that line of thinking. Humans are so weird.

This really reminds me of how I am with my sister. We were always really close, but also fought a lot. But even when we fought, especially when our parents weren't home, we'd always end up laughing somehow. We'd always end up lying side by side on the floor, counting scratches. We still have these moments, just with less physical wounds. But even if we fight every day for a week, I don't know what I'd do without her. I love your music, it's so beautiful!
I listen to your songs EACH AND EVERY SINGLE DAY and they are all fantastic, you guys make my day with your sublime art 💜🌙🔮 Thank you!! You are AMAZING 🎶😍
I sort of interpreted this as a relationship that was once good and loving - one that's turned into something hurtful and toxic for both parties. They don't know whether to leave the relationship or stay - they still care about each other, but it's so hard to be together when it's this bad for them. (The relationship itself is never defined in the song to be romantic, but I kind of classified it as romantic in my head.) I absolutely love the song and the band, and if my interpretation is incorrect... Oh well. I still love the song. :)
All of your music is soooo good at making a mood. Idk what to call it. Something halfway between witchy and a fairy tale. I love it so much please continue
This song makes me think about my dnd ocs. My character had someone who they saw as a sister. They had a very good relationship in the beginning because they both got into mischief and were both kicked out of their homes because of that so they related to each other. Soon a war broke out and they were forced into a life of crime to survive. Together they started a gang and it started gaining traction and growing bigger. The sister became more outwardly cruel and my character became more conflicted. Eventually they had a fight and went their separate ways, but even so they still love and care and worry about each other. Both of them would still do anything to help the other even if they wouldn't outright admit it. "Remember when I could tell you not to smile when you were mad? And you would always crack, and we’d both be laughing in the end Now you’re not so quick to forget" These lines especially make me think about them. Like that's them to a T.
ive recently lost a best friend of almost 10 years and we re still tied by our other mutual friends, this song puts salt on the wound but also heals it idk how to describe it better
is it just me or does this song have a similar feeling + theme to down the river from the foxlore album? they feel like they could be linked, like before and after versions of the same two people... although i'm not sure which would be the before and which would be the after haha
I see this song as 2 people who from the singer’s perspective started of as friends but as time goes on the other grows more distant and starts acting different in the small ways, leading the singer to wonder if they’re still friends or if they ever really were friends.
I didn't realize this came out so recently! I absolutely love it, all your songs are such a vibe 💖 Edit: Oh shoot I meant lyric video, sleep deprivation gets to me-
oh god it feels so good to listen to the crane wives again. i think i have songs on every single character playlist i have. so many songs that feel so relatable. hoping someday when i finally learn to play guitar i can do a cover ^^ i love yall so much!!
I’m just finding this after going through losing my best friend of half my life and this really feels like the last couple days of me begging her to communicate with me and her just continuing the behaviour that was hurting me so much as i thought back on everything that had happened between us and that realization that I couldn’t fix it because she didn’t want to.
I have two OC's who this fits so well for and no one asked but I'm gonna tell their story anyway So basically they are twin brothers who have wings and are princes and since their parents are royalty and not around a lot they relied on each other and we're best friends but as they grew older they drifted apart. Until one of them falls for a human wich is against the rules and the council finds out and thinks it's the other innocent twin and sense the other is only a scared fifteen year old he doesn't correct them and his brother is exiled. He feels guilty for the rest of his life and the other brother becomes evil and swears revenge, and on his brothers coronation day he takes over the castle and fights him. But it ends up with the evil brother on the ground with a sword to his throat. But the other brother drops the sword and gives him the chance to kill him. So the exiled brother flees with all his held back pain and confusion coming at him all at once.
I kinda think that this song is about 2 best friends, one of them being really toxic but the other being oblivious to it since they were raised in a toxic household.the toxic bsf starts caring about the other after a while and is starting to try and become less toxic.the one who was oblivious to it realizes that the toxic on is actually being toxic to them.they try to -kts- and thats what the "this will be the death of me" is,them saying that this will be the last time that the other talks to them, the toxic one convinces them not to do it.the toxic one stops trying to get better and becomes toxic again.the other is no longer oblivious to it and theyve been put so much that they try to -kts- again.their stopped by the toxic one.then the toxic one becomes EVEN more toxic.the final "this will be the death of me" is the other bsf finally succeeding at -suicide- and dying. So yeah!!!
after listening to take me to war, I failed to comment there because this vid autoplayed. But still, as I wanted to say: I didn't know that there are more songs that hits hard and is very good that The Crane Wives could offer.
This makes me think of a character that has just been introduced into a book or show but we can’t quite tell if there with the good guys or the bad guys
Sure, you can say enemies to lovers but how about a dragon - teporary rider relationship that happened because "This is the strongest dragon on the Archipelago, I will steal him... for some time, then I'll give him back." But heck yeah sure you will, it's your fault you're both now stuck on an island. The dragon is angry at you but you try to make up for all you did before... thing is, there was A LOT of it.

But it ends up with the evil brother on the ground with a sword to his throat. But the other brother drops the sword and gives him the chance to kill him. So the exiled brother flees with all his held back pain and confusion coming at him all at once.

Siblings to enemies to strangers
I have found my new music addiction!
This song touchs my feelings in a amazing way, it is amazing
I just found out about this group and god have I just been listening to their discography. Oh my god, I just stumbled upon a gem🙏

I found you a while ago and I'm absolutely in love with you guys!
This makes me think of a character that has just been introduced into a book or show but we can’t quite tell if there with the good guys or the bad guys
So underrated.

I love your songs!
I think this song is about a relationship that is turning toxic but they are trying to make healthy again
I absolutely love your art!
How interesting, everybody is saying this sounds like a lover song, and my first thought was about old friendships
YESS
Love you guys :D
desert duo and seavbo coded
This reminds me of Lucy Grey from Hunger Games Snakes and Songbirds

Everyone saying “enemies to lovers” is wrong. I see this as an “enemies *and* lovers”
