From a 4th Century Legend to our beloved modern day Santa Claus
The modern day figure of Santa Claus is based on a number of different historical figures and traditions, including Saint Nicholas. It is believed that the story of Saint Nicholas began to be associated with Christmas in the early 1800s. One popular custom at the time was to put oranges in stockings, which was said to have been started by a woman in Philadelphia. It is also believed that the poem A Visit from Saint Nicholas or better known as the night before Christmas which was published in 1823 helped to popularize the story of Saint Nicholas and make him into the Santa Claus we know today.
