Territory holding males and females will allow offspring to remain until the following year. The kits will then either disperse or be forced out, to find their own Territory.
Finding them and their scats... the absolutely best way is how we first found them. Tracking their tracks in the snow. By doing so, you know where they frequent. Other than that, walk forest tracks. Martens scat to claim/retain territory, so they scat at the same spot..

will a male allow a male offspring to remain in the area?
Is this a different location to where they were going to cut down? Also, how do you find them, find their spraint etc?
