Didn't know this distro, but it is really good. The lesson today is: We can do a lot of creative work on budget hardware running open source software. No need for expensive things to get started. Thanks a lot, Chris.
Ubuntu Studio has been my goto distro for, at least, the last six years. Thanks for the review and thanks for the tip, I had no idea that Blender could be used the way you use it. Two thumbs up ! :) !
I am impressed, this looks like a beautifully integrated distribution with an eye towards being both user friendly and truly productive. So many distros just rehash the desktop again and again, without any real benefit for normal end-users. Thanks for showing us this gem!
Ubuntu studio is a great distro for discovering what is available in Linux software. You could spend hours searching the internet and installing all sorts of things but the makers of this distro have picked just about the best of everything. |I am not an Ubuntu user but I think everyone should give this distro a try.
16:10 "fairly modest hardware like the Pentium Gold" [a 4.0 GHz dual-core CPU] I'm glad I watched this on my quad-core Android phone, so that my poor 1.6 GHz AMD E-350 laptop couldn't hear you say that...
I've been daily driving this system for a few years now, and it has been stellar for my purposes. I have Windows 10 as well, but haven't really felt the need to swap in between the two for the most part. It helps that I'm on a low ed CPU as well, which Linux is far friendlier to.
Bonjour Chris, thanks for another great video. I upgraded my brother and law's ten year old dell after watching you last video. However, I could not obtain the Pentium Gold anywhere, so I got the Intel core i3-F for 107.00 Euros. It met all my expectations and more. Installed Mint, but after seeing this video, I am re-installing it with Ubuntu Studio. Thank you very much for exposing me to this Ubuntu version that I was not aware of its existence.
Another excellent video! I have been out of Computers for a couple of years and a few months ago my Laptop gave out. I decided to go and get a new PC Desktop instead. I was shocked to find that this Pentium Gold is a Duo Core Four Thread running at 4 GHz! I bought a new HP Desktop, Pentium Gold, 8 GB RAM, 250 SSD for $349 on sale. All I do is surf the web, streaming, and word processing, and this machine is amazing. My Lubuntu and Zorin OS’s are on my older machines, this new version of Ubuntu does look amazing...if one will use that software.
A pc suitable for light and everyday needs (internet, email, browsing etc) is not expensive nowadays. SSD has become the most important compontent in the machine due to the extremely wide spectrum of user requirements. 8GB is about the minimum needed to give windows 10 a fluid experience, provided the SSD is of sufficient speed (sata-600 with at least 80% saturation, but preferably a nvme SSD directly on the PCIe bus - The SSD in my machine reaches 3.2 Gbytes/sec). The difference in speed between the slowest and fastest CPU has become very large indeed. If you're impressed with a Pentium Gold, you should see the benchmarks of an AMD EPYC with 128 cores and hyperthreading! Remember the Core I7 Gen1 from 2009? That CPU is still faster than the Pentium Gold, that's how wide the speed spectrum is of available CPUs nowadays. Only the newer CPUs are much more power efficient. And it will not be much longer before the line between RAM and storage starts to fade, there are already memory modules that are both RAM and Storage available for servers. See it as the merging of the short term and long term memory.
Another extraordinary thing about ubuntu studio for audio is the custom real time kernel. Really low latencies! This you donˋt get when installing just the software on another distro. Great channel btw!
I'm always glad when a new EC video drops, but I'm also always a bit depressed when Professor Barnatt says, "That's it for another video...". I'm thinking that's where the thumbs-down are coming from. They are from people who are depressed that the video is over and deal with it in a spiteful way.
Yes! I have been using Ubuntu Studio for years to produce content for my channel. I favor Openshot for video editing because it's very streamlined and allows a quick workflow.
I just downloaded Hydrogen 1.0.2 thanks to you introducing it in your videos. I'm a huge music fan when it comes to the beat of the music so I totally love this program. I mean gee it is so easy to come up with hundreds of beats and combinations on the fly as it's playing. Love it. I'm thinking about installing Ubuntu Studio on an HP laptop with Intel i7 in it. Thanks so much for sharing Christopher.
Very interesting distro, a collection of very capable software, it's all free and the results are incomparable to those done on systems in the thousands of £$€'s together with software that is loaned, AND NOT OWNED, in these modern times. Another great vid.
I have to admit that I am impressed at how well that Pentium Gold G6400 CPU handles UB Studio and the necessary applications to create a 1080p video. I did not expect it to be so smooth. Thanks!
Very nice. Put a CAD program or two on that, maybe a slicer, and you have a PC geared to create almost anything...all with free software. What a time to be alive.
Thanks for the edit: hope you realize we were just having a little fun: it's amazing how a single letter can make such a big difference. I'm still convinced that "Windows Updates are bungled often" !! KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK, Chris.
Ubuntu Studio looks pretty cool as a creative Linux distro. The UI looks more modern and the software suite helps to reflect the experience. The GUI is entirely different than Fedora and the layout has a quality appearance that I rarely saw when working with a few Linux distros. I will definitely give this distro a try when I get a chance to test it in a VM.

I can't deny that this has me quite exited. I noted that Ubunto Studio includes Scribus, the desktop publishing package we use a lot, and which I just installed on Raspberry Pi OS. I was interested to see that Linux regards Scribus as a graphics package, whereas I would have put it in the Office section; not that it matters, as long as I know where to find it. You mentioned on a previous video - I forget which one - that the best way to contact you, & guarantee you'll see it, is in a comment on a video. I tried this the other day, but as I had a specific suggestion, I looked for the most relevant video to comment on. This video was quite old old, and as I feared, you probably never saw the comment, so I'll repeat it here... The one thing I need to work out how to do on the Pi4b, is how to get it to talk to my Windows 10 LAN. I understand that, if I want to boot up the Pi with access to the most relevant Windows HDD, I need something with the unpleasant sounding name of fstab. OK, I know full well that I can work this out for myself, but I thought it might make for an interesting video. On a related subject, I just re-watched your video on Linux distros, for an old Eee PC, and I'd love to see an update. A recent search uncovered something called Leeenux Linux, which you hadn't mentioned. I have an old Eee PC 1000HE, which I'd quite like to make useful again. @Anand Raj That's very much an it-depends. Ubuntu is about 4x heavier than Mint. Try Mageia on your system, it probably won't run at all, or very poorly. Conversely I have PCLOS on about the same hardware and it's slick.
Just when I'd sworn off of trying another distro you show me one I really have to try. Wish I could convince my Mac addicted niece to try this one. I agree about the absurdly narrow scroll bars, I think young people with perfect eyesight and hands must have figured that was a good idea.
I use Plastik for my window decorations and that helps (also gives me bigger window controls). But yes, that really needs to be a convenient user setting, not something buried in the bowels.
@Anthony... Check in with those young people in twenty years time, their eyesight and joints, and they might not agree those narrow scroll bars were such a good idea.

Great video, Chris! I have really enjoyed this old PC series. Keep up the good work! One thing I have noticed though is that your website is a little outdated. For example, the storage section doesn't even talk about SSDs AFAIK. Thanks for the content! I'm really looking forward to next Sunday :)
Thanks for this, and you are right -- I need to do a major re-write of the website. Unfortunately other matters are taking my time right now, but I do plan to spend some time on the website later in 2021.
That was the most hilariously recursive review I think I've seen. M.C. Escher would have loved it. A great idea to tailor packages for audiences that may not be technical (or have spare time) to search for compatible software to meet their needs. Nice to see that for this version, at least, Ubuntu's dropped the usual dreary Victorian maroon colour scheme for the desktop.
Wonderful! No need to buy a high end PC for all this editing. Shows you how much bloatware and unnecessary code is included with retail O/S. And hardware vendors equally add their baggage, all for a price! Thank you for showing the lighter pathway to computing!
Very nice intro and have to say, would probably pick this distro over ye olde Ubuntu just for the convenience. I hope to see deeper dives into some of these newer apps! 🙏
Thank you for this video. If one thing is clear, it is that the result does not show the amount of work that goes into making a video. It made me wonder how much time it takes. I can't imagine you doing a job besides your youtube videos. ;-)
Thanks for this. My videos take on average 40 to 50 hours from pre-production to completion and upload. These days I am largely a full-time UA-camr. :)
Absolute self plug 🔌 but now that’s it playing with Ubuntu studioooo! If you haven’t tried please try and I will release another videooooooooooo next Sunday and will talk you again very soon!
Surprised to see Konqueror wasn't installed out of the box -- but looking at the wikipedia page I'm happy to report that it does appear to be in active development. It's a close race between MATE and KDE as my favorite desktops - glad to see KDE is still looking sharp and useful.
So I see "Ubuntu Studio" and I'm thinking... oh no, Ubuntu means Gnome, which I _loathe_ ... but then I see KDE DESKTOP and now _I'm so happy!_ Must fetch and play with this. The Gold PC makes a nice benchmark for how it'll run on other semi-modern hardware, too.
Thanks for reminding us that not everybody in the world needs a machine with a AMD 5950X CPU, NVIDIA 3090, 128GB of RAM.
Exactly. :)
Wish I had the money to send him a top shelf graphics card though, just to see what he would/could do with it.
Yeah those specs are way overkill, as I'm typing this on my i9 10850k, 6900XT, 64GB DDR4, and 12TB machine heheheh

Always did have fewer issues and Windows is now using some of the bell and whistles from Linux Distros.
@@climjames1677 Because they know their product isn't capable, and need to import into it components that work.
In the end, Windows will be Linux in all but name, due to taking in so much...
@Anand Raj That's very much an it-depends. Ubuntu is about 4x heavier than Mint. Try Mageia on your system, it probably won't run at all, or very poorly. Conversely I have PCLOS on about the same hardware and it's slick.
Stellar content! Thank you for the review. I will definately recommend both the distro and this video to my creative friends.
Thank you very much. It's always a joy watching your videos, Mr Barnatt.
That is awesome for CCTV forensic experts can use a bootable distro for analysis!
@@plica06 Oh yeah... and the one-pixel accuracy required to click the default window controls... evidently designed for Little Teeny Eyes.

[Note the date... it's not a new problem...]
As an Ubuntu Studio user, thank you for making this video.
I like the minimalism of this setup!
There's just something so special about an early 2000 PC case. That's why I still kept my old Pentium 4 2001 HP case for when I completely redo it may have to modify it a bit but I'll do it but it's missing a plastic piece on top I'll have to find.
I'm watching on Ubuntu Studio :D I was surprised the video editor is as good as you demonstrated. I must try it now.
What's the differnce between Ubuntu studio and Kubuntu if they both use KDE?
@@louistournas120 Kubuntu doesnt havd the extra packages built in. It has a smaller install footprint. Ubuntu studio is basically kubuntu with the extra stuff
An interesting video. Nice to see so much flexibility in an initial install.
Happy to finally be early on a video, another great one Chris :)
Thanks for this video! I was doing pretty much the same as you with an old Compaq. I got lucky enough to go the budget AMD route, the CPU being used. Anyways, thank you for the idea of Ubuntu Studio. I usually use Mint, but I want something new to play with!
I just can't wait till Sundays for the upload. You make my week!
I use a lot of these apps myself, but never used Ubuntu Studio. Thanks for showing us Hydrogen. Had to get that real quick.
Quite interesting. This is the first time I've seen this OS demonstrated. A lot better than other Linux based OSes which comes bare bones.
Congrats on 750k subs
Thanks.
Wonderful! No need to buy a high end PC for all this editing. Shows you how much bloatware and unnecessary code is included with retail O/S. And hardware vendors equally add their baggage, all for a price! Thank you for showing the lighter pathway to computing!
Love having a good sound mixer on a computer.
I am definitely going to try this on my 15 year old core2duo. The menu transitions seem to be very smooth.
Sir, I respect you because you are amongst the doers. Doers are those who do the real work. Keep it up!
Very nice intro and have to say, would probably pick this distro over ye olde Ubuntu just for the convenience. I hope to see deeper dives into some of these newer apps! 🙏
I didn't think of using inkscape for text, that's very clever!
This video has distinctly proven that parallel videos exist in possible parallel universes 😁 Cheers Chris
Wow, this Ubuntu Studio sure looks good Chris, so I'm going to install it and give it a try.
Back to the future on a Linux distro. Excellent video, thank you.
Thanks for showing me another thing I wasn't aware existed. Saves me from installing generic Linux and searching for individual applications.
Thank you for another informative video. It is good to have all necessary tools in a central location. Best wishes.
Great work Chris!!
Absolute self plug 🔌 but now that’s it playing with Ubuntu studioooo! If you haven’t tried please try and I will release another videooooooooooo next Sunday and will talk you again very soon!
Chris, you were getting very close to an M.C.Escher like situation, showing and creating the video simultaneously... you escaped just in time. 👍
Thanks, always love your reviews, keep it up.
As always , the most complete Explanation on youtube. Thanks Sir .
Very powerful tools considering the resources available!
Thanks for continuing to give us great content Chris.
