Why are platformers not getting decent review scores anymore? Seriously, holy shit ,from Ducktales Remastered to Yoshi's Woolly World to Yooka Laylee to this...
Yooka-Laylee seems like it's a 6~7 game. It just seems like it could have done a lot of genre defining things or things that would make the gameplay experience fun in modern standards but fell short of those promises. Snake pass seemed like a more fun game than yooka laylee and I barely knew of it's existence until IGN reviewed it. Also there was the cuphead game which seemed to have gotten good reviews. Yoshi's woolly world seems like a 7~8 game which means that it's a great game. Nothing like a super mario but it'll do. The next mario game (super mario world) might be getting anywhere from 8~9 or maybe even higher than that so all love is not lost for platformers.
Cuphead isn't even out yet. There's no review of that game yet. Yooka Laylee is a great indie game for Banjo-Kazooie fans that seems to be unfairly reviewed as a full AAA game. Snake Pass had advertisements for Switch and PS4 everywhere. Yoshi's Woolly World is an excellent platformer. I have it. And the next Mario game is certainly not "Super Mario World"....... a game that came out in 1990. Where are you getting your facts from? geez.
When this came out on master system is was mind blowing good! 10 for sure back then. Even today this game would be a solid 8 but go look up master system game in 1989 you'll see what I'm talking about. Rating it is like rating super mario bro and saying it's missing modern features by todays standards I'd rate super mario bros a 3 or 4. But at the time it was released it was mind blowing good 10 outta 10. Rating retro is not fair tbh.
YoshMaster the shantae series, shovel knight, hollow knight, oddworld New n tasty, ori and the blind forest. look into those, exceptional and beautiful platformers.

The best ones are the sphinx and the intro castle ones. But you also don't *need* any of the more expensive shop items to reach a boss fight, you just get that gear if you find the game too hard or if you want to sequence break.
Nah, megaman already has too many parts in all kind of art styles from retro till modern. I'd rather love to see other retro games instead that dont have a ton of of sequels.
This beautuful game deserves an 8 at least. They made a great remake of one of the best metroidvanias ever and for me, the best Master System game so far!! This remake gave the original game justice. 7.1??? Is abit too low. TOO LOW.
"Forcing us to grind for randomly drop items becomes tedious" Come on man, this shit is the shit that has been standarized precisely these last years. I hope you don't review Destiny 2 "for instance".
Nachestic Just because it became standardized in the industry doesn't mean that it's still not poor game design. I'd much rather complain over something I find broken in terms of gameplay, instead of just accepting it because "all the other major titles do that".
Nachestic it's a valid complaint. I want to play a game that respects my time. you can get a sense of satisfaction from improving a character through grinding, but it looks like in this case it doesn't have that purpose.
I totally agree that is poor game design, I do not like it either. I was trying to say that the reviewer seemed to point out that this particular mechanic could have been fixed with "simple mechanics" (?) modern games have. When in reality modern games such as Destiny and the most expected Destiny 2, along with many, many other games we could get now are exploting this shitty mechanic to extend gameplay time. My point was just to discuss his "modern games got rid of this tedious stuff" with my "like hell they do".
snomonster3 I totally agree. Generally, I have very little time to devote to video games, so a title that requires hundreds of hours of grinding just to progress through the game is out of the question for me. I usually end up playing and enjoying indie games that average about two to ten hours, because I would prefer a shorter but comprehensive experience over a longer game that's more dull or monotonous.

??? On the contrary, most side scrollers (a genre I love as my name can attest) hold up extremely well. In fact, this is amongst the lesser ones as the controls are beyond terrible.
Amaizing retro switch mechanic, faithful to the briliant original, good platoforming, soundtrack, level design and graphics. Buuut it has grinding, therefore it's 7.1 whet
@@martymartin2894 Grinding, when used in context of video game critique, is the game or game developers making you do same tasks over-and-over again to gain more points, level up to attain something or even progress through the game. This is often used in RPG's.
7.1 is harsh. I just finished this game for the second time (I think I was 9 the first time). This game is something special. Being able to switch seamlessly between original and updated graphics is a testament to how this game holds up thirty years later. Why change mechanics? Too bad you have to “grind”. I always enjoyed going back to an area that I had struggled with earlier in the game with my new equipment and utterly devastating the enemies around me. Dragon’s Trap is flat out fun to play. This game was a technical achievement for its time and extremely underrated for decades. Why change now I guess. This is the perfect piece of nastalgia to help hold me over until season three of Stranger Things. Also, quick tip if no one wants to “grind”. Once your Hawk Man you can fly right to the original castle from the beginning of the game. Go to the room where you fought the first dragon and get a ton of coin from a chest. Defeat all of the enemies in here and get the legendary sword and armor for free as drops. Come up the exit at the well. Instead of getting out of the well, go to the left inside of it and press up for a secret door where you can buy the legendary shield.
I have played through this game and, even though I thought it was a great remake (and deserves a higher score maybe an 8) you cannot deny that this game has certain annoyances that are present in even some of the best 80s games. For example, there are LITERALLY INVISIBLE doors and pathways as “secrets” and difficulty is sometimes created by simply making the enemies hit harder/have more health, which just feels a bit cheap.
Thanks for the video!! Only add that the vid say this game is a "Remastered version" (0:27) and the description "Remake", Remastered and Remake isn't the same you know :P... in my opinion it's a remake just saying XD...
I've loved this game since I was 6 and replayed the original about a year ago and it really holds up well. I'm definitely gonna get this as soon as I finish zelda
Just bought this on the PSN Store and here are my overall thoughts:- It replaces the MS version completely but I was left wanting more.... Sooooo much more.... like a full blown remake. read on..... I'm a long term fan of the original but something about it just made me want more. Like a full blown remake of certain mechaniqs. Dragon shouldn't breath fire under water (it's so 80's gameplay), wish there was more attributes to elements etc such as certain elements should have damage variants for enemy's and player etc, more secret doors and teasure room should be able to be discovered, armor swords and shields should have special ability that goes way beyond just the one that magically makes blocks appear and destroys those very same blocks. That kind of remake is what I wanted. Even with the original, there are many times where I would think about where I would place certain extra treasure rooms if I were a Level Designer and was hoping they'd show up more in this remake but there is hardly anything that's new or changed from the original for the better. Another thing that would have been good is that enemy's should no longer constantly drop money after the first time you killed them, thus encouraging the player to do more exploring for treasure rooms, and going out their way to truely get rewarded. That idea alone has been engraved in my mind ever since I played the original 20+ years ago.. I hope all this makes sense and I really wish Lizard Cube see this post I made on various youtube video reviews. I would have also loved a level editor upon completing the game too, or some multiplayer modes such as death match (yea, why not), Co-Op and more. I know I sound like I'm being nit-picky but the truth is, I've already rinsed both the Master System Original, The slightly remixed Game Gear Version, The Smooth 60fps Dragon Curse version on Turbo Grafx 16, and even the fan-remake on PC (which I still think is by far the best in terms of gameplay), so I was really expecting more varieation in gameplay. Not just the same game all over again. Don't get me wrong though, I absolutely love the new Remake's Hand-Drawn Art (it's a shame we don't get female animal forms as sprites too), and this is by far superior in every way to the Master System version (basically making it pointless), but I'd still recommend playing the Game Gear version for slight differences if you're a hardcore fan, The Dragons Curse because well, I like the sprites and wish we could have got those too for this remake, and I advise any fan out there to download the Fan Remake on PC. I even remember reaching out to the creator of that fan game for a Level Editor but he refused to offer one. :(
I bought "Meka" the SMS emulator from the lead Dev Omar back in 1999, just to play the classic of this. I had it preordered as soon as I saw it on PS4, and will pick it up on steam in June. regardless of the "only 7 hours" of gameplay, it's cheaper and more fun than most modern games anyway, thus better value for money. hell, I am still playing this nearly 30 years on, so that speaks value to me :)
Guys, don't be like that. Many games are still coming for Vita, digital and physical.... Just yesterday,it was announced Under Night In-Birth Exe was coming to all major Sony platforms...including Vita. Also, the Vita hasn't been hacked to hell like the PSP IIRC.... If it doesn't happen,I'll get it for Steam.😌
i loved this game when i was a kid...if i'm not mistaken, it was continuous play? i mean like, it didn't have levels or stages? you could just keep going...
I dont want to miss judge this game because I haven't played it.. but what we really all want is a remake of the original wonder on the master system.. it's the only wonder boy worth playing..
They did fix the issue of farming for charm stones to buy items, instead having just 6 of them in challenge rooms for each of Wonderboy/girl's forms. I remember that being immensely annoying when I was playing as a kid and much worse than just grinding for money.
Played this through again recently. Lizard cube did a great job. Honestly I would have preferred a more detailed pixel art environment and chip tune soundtrack rather than a complete redraw. The improvement of the mechanics was terrific and made the game much more playable and the orchestral sound track was fun to listen to.
I also really think we need more games like this nowadays. Even if they aren't remakes just originals... Games like axiom verge for example. These platformers are the whole reason I got in to gaming a child and I truly believe there's a huge market for them now if the developers put enough hard work and love and don't just slap dash them to try and make a quick buck. Modern games seem to be all about cinematic storylines, action, gore and violence. These little gems leave you in sort of a trance as you chop and jump about through a level. You don't get that kind of feeling in games now. Just my opinion... Maybe it's the nostalgia talking
I gave you a thumb up a year ago but after playing this, I ended u retracting is because I don't think this score warrants this game considering that the only thing that you nit picked on in the review was a little grinding which I personally found fun. Personally, I'm so glad Filip joined your team.
I feel it's a bonus that you have to grind instead of being able to in-app purchase. Cheating style in-app purchases have ruined a lot of games (eg NBA2K17)
I know it's not a big deal but...it took 7 hours to beat? What the hell was you doing? I've never played this game before, going in completely blind and getting close to 100% and it only took around 4 hours.
Yo at this point I don’t even listen to the game reviewer, everyone in the comments points out things they missed and when all of them are gathered it makes a better review then the video
Good remake of the game and the original hitting one button to retro to modern version during gameplay. I had this on sea master system I love it and can get the game done in 2hrs 15min
Judging by all the efforts they did o. Sticking to the original and not ruining it with extra content (hell, you can even switch to the original if you feel like it. How many games do that?), I think it deserved far more than just 7.1.
If grinding is so much of a burden, never play the post 2000's Final Fantasy games expecting to get the "most powerful weapon in the game". I have played this a million times on the Master System and, quite frankly, I don't remember grinding to be an issue. The difficulty was punishing, though.
"Is like the Dark Souls of Metroid-vanias"... But now seriously, I play the original as kid and now see and play this on the Switch with such and amazing makeover, is princeless! The animation is so fluid, is like playable art, and the music men! Jon done an amazing job but is a bit sad 'cause it seems that the game is not getting much attention, I really feel that. For me it deserves it!
In a time where most games are apps with simple platforming... in a time when a NES Classic sells for more than an Xbox One or PS4... can we please get more games like WonderBoy: The Dragon's Trap??? Maybe Alex Kidd, Ristar, Dynamite Heady, Shining Force I&II, Phantasy Star 1-4, Beyond Oasis, Vector Man, Alien Soldier... Sega's properties could make a huge comeback if they had some comeback sauce here. Sonic Mania looks great but COMIX ZONE WITH THIS TREATMENT!?!? The Halo Anniversary effects. I know Sega didn't do this but give us some goodies and take note... ETERNAL CHAMPIONS CD???
Gotta say: This game is really punishing when losing... setting the player back to the home when losing at the end of a level... really frustrating too when playing really late at night and running in area's above the current gear level :O

currently Free on Epic 7/16/22
Must buy in my opinion. But you gotta have lived it.
i never heard of wonderboy before this remake
bought it because it looked great and i do not regret it at all
@@breakerboy365 all the old wonder boy games were great.
Switch pick up asap! Another gem!
Bought this game an hour ago and now seeing this review hope its good.
I would have personally given it an 8/10 from playing the original last year. some of the mechanics are a bit basic but this game is still fun.
Capcom should remake Megaman like this, with remastered BGMs and awesomely hand drawn 2D sprites.
Evolution of Gaming!! 00:03
It's really colorful and pretty
this is how 8 bit remakes should be done. I love the hand drawn look
I hope a Vita port is on the horizon.Looks too beautiful...
vita's dead
StriderRyu7 whats a vita ?
StriderRyu7 Ain't coming to Vita
Guys, don't be like that. Many games are still coming for Vita, digital and physical....
Just yesterday,it was announced Under Night In-Birth Exe was coming to all major Sony platforms...including Vita. Also, the Vita hasn't been hacked to hell like the PSP IIRC....
If it doesn't happen,I'll get it for Steam.😌
i loved this game when i was a kid...if i'm not mistaken, it was continuous play? i mean like, it didn't have levels or stages? you could just keep going...
It’s one of the best ‘Metroidvanias’ I’ve played, and actually pre-dates the genre. 7.1 is way too low.
Just bought it and im watching the minutes count down as it downloads. I can't wait to play it!
Bought it yesterday. I remember playing the original on my Master System, and this remake looks amazing!
I dont want to miss judge this game because I haven't played it.. but what we really all want is a remake of the original wonder on the master system.. it's the only wonder boy worth playing..
Mario and Shantae had a baby, and gave it to Link to raise it. It grew up to be this game.
Had this on the Sega Gamegear will defo be purchasing on Steam
I'm wondering if there is a high jump by double tapping????
Looks like they kept the classic "every walkable surface is made of ice" feature
Are there any other games like this whether new or remastered available on ps4
I gave you a thumb up a year ago but after playing this, I ended u retracting is because I don't think this score warrants this game considering that the only thing that you nit picked on in the review was a little grinding which I personally found fun. Personally, I'm so glad Filip joined your team.
I bet you regret this comment now!!
I loved this game...absolutely amazing!
I feel it's a bonus that you have to grind instead of being able to in-app purchase. Cheating style in-app purchases have ruined a lot of games (eg NBA2K17)
The Artstyle looks so cool, something different like this catch my eyes even more than Witcher 3´s graphic
I know it's not a big deal but...it took 7 hours to beat?
What the hell was you doing? I've never played this game before, going in completely blind and getting close to 100% and it only took around 4 hours.
booo
Yo at this point I don’t even listen to the game reviewer, everyone in the comments points out things they missed and when all of them are gathered it makes a better review then the video
It doesn't actually force you to grind for randomly dropped items at all. Interested to know the basis for this claim.
What does he mean by grinding
Thank god we can switch to the originals graphics.
Was on the edge about buying this but once I saw that you could switch I instantly bought it. D:
I thought DotEmu went under? Would love this to be a physical release.
Only one minor gripe present in games today like latest Zelda & it gets a 7? Hmm...Weird metrics, IGN.
He gushes about how amazing the game is, lists one small negative, then gives it a 7.1...
The difficulty was punishing, though.
free on epic games
"Is like the Dark Souls of Metroid-vanias"... But now seriously, I play the original as kid and now see and play this on the Switch with such and amazing makeover, is princeless! The animation is so fluid, is like playable art, and the music men! Jon done an amazing job but is a bit sad 'cause it seems that the game is not getting much attention, I really feel that. For me it deserves it!
Wonderboy, what is the secret of your power?
Wonderboy, won't you take me far away from the mucky-muck man?
I’d personally give it between an 8 or a 9 since old games are usually supposed to be challenging and this gives it better graphics
There are hidden shops to buy potions and elemental attacks
This game was so awesome and cute.. loved the art style!
Okay. So has anyone had any luck locating a copy to preorder/buy?
too much wonder= 7.1 ign
and by saying that buy this game now :D
would be awesome if they tackled 'Wonder Boy In Monster World' next.
Oh wait forgot Golden Axe Warrior!
Gotta say: This game is really punishing when losing... setting the player back to the home when losing at the end of a level... really frustrating too when playing really late at night and running in area's above the current gear level :O
I love the fact that these 2d sidescrolls are making a comeback
Ign: It's a retro remake.
Sensible person: I'd say this game is 8/10.
Ign: What about 7/10?
Sensible Person: fine.
Ign: *7.1 it is*
can u play this on nvidia shield tv as don't want to play it on pc or console
The game is on sale right now. On the Switch for $9.99 50%off so worth it. Downloading right now
It needs a 9.5 I LOVE the art in this game
No physical?
the art style is KreyGasm
grinding is one of the best parts
I'm getting this game. It looks like a lot of fun, a concept that seems lost in a lot of today's games.
From where you pulled that score.. This is not skating on ice
is this digital only or there is physical copy ?>?
teddy susan Digital only (for now at least)
This is definitely my most nostalgic game
Why was the discount Zelda main theme playing at the beginning?
