  • We visit four of the best spots in southern Turkey for cruising sailboats, Bozak Boku, the cliff tombs of Dalyan, Gocek Bay, and Cokertme. We get some good wind in between and the sailing turns out to be top notch.

Thanks DT. After months of lockdown and limited bandwidth we get back to the States and my laptop dies. I barely got the files off the machine. Go figure. But we're back up and running now.

Turkey's awesome. You can't walk down a street without stubbing your toe on 2000 year + history. The Lycians were great fans of a tomb with a view.

I'm always amazed by our viewers. Yes indeed. The history was what kept us moving from spot to spot, oftentimes not the biggest of towns but the outlying places where the history is the main attraction. There's so much of it that only a few warrant even a museum. My only disappointment is how much of it was destroyed. The effort put into destruction rivals that of the actual construction. It's quite sad. No site seemed to have been spared.

Thanks so much. It brought back a lot of memories. Wendy even dug into the iPad to find the pics that went with the video. She had stuff I'd totally forgotten.

We hiked up to that same spot a couple of yrs ago.. it didn't look very far from where we were moored in the bay "hey it'll only take 10 mins to hike up there...." said someone...and yep must have lost about x pounds by the time we reached it. Nickednamed it 'tomb with a view'' :)

Hi David. Gocek Bay was one of the best spots we went to, if not the best. For some reason a lot of our video disappeared, but there were so many cool inlets with restaurants. The one at the back of the bay with the parallel (to land) dock was seeing a lot of recent investment from the Russian couple that owned the resort. We got to meet them and shake hands, and the wife was so excited to tell us of all the improvements that were soon coming, above and beyond what they'd already done. It sounded like they'd developed it from scratch.

Wendy wants to document that Kevin can hand steer... Kevin's response "off camera." He wants to document that Wendy can fish... just kidding Wendy... I just wanted to throw that out there....

Nice video! I keep my boat in Turkey. I buy a new Turkcell SIM card every year when I arrive. 70 TL for 19 GB data, which is more than I can use. Works everywhere. Much better than selecting anchorages based on internet coverage!

Hi Martin. Yes, we do too. It's one of the great things about Europe. In the beginning we had the issue of not having our main phone numbers, but we fixed that by using old phones as internet hot spots with the purchased SIM cards. I only wish they'd allow you to sign up for an actual account with autopay, but they won't since you need a bank account, and that means European residency. The prepaid SIMs are only good for 30 days, but usually rechargeable via the carrier's online app (but rarely (never) work outside the host country). I believe Turkey and Greece were the least expensive of all the countries we visited. It only took us a year or so to figure all this out. We're probably slow learners ;-) BTW, the one restaurant with the free WiFi was totally off the grid, with no phone coverage at all. We also found that if we have to upload a 2-3GB video we'll need something more robust than a phone. The SIM cards are set to have high download speeds but relatively slow for uploading. Thanks so much for being with us.

Awesome !!! Katie (13) and I sailed Symi, Bozburun, Bozukkale, Ciftlik, Dalyan, Asi Koyu, and back to Marmaris in September/October last year ! Did you explore the Castle ruins in Bozukkale ? We did the same day trip up the Dalyan river. We went up further, to the Turkish mud baths. Loved it ! Asi Koyu was really nice too :) We were planning to start again from Asi Koyu and continue East this season - but I guess we will have to wait until 2021 ! When were you there ? Where are you at the moment ?
    Kind regards, John.
    Wellington, NZ.

Hi John. We're trying to catch up as we speak, since we are seriously behind. Also, and unfortunately, I find that land travels and such don't sell well with the UA-cam viewers, so we only show the big highlights, mixed in with the stuff they seem to want. We did not make it to Bozukkale, but did see some impressive castles and fortifications along the way. Bodrum was quite impressive. The dates were around mid-August of last year, and we're now in the Caribbean after crossing the Atlantic last November. Talisman is hauled at present in Antigua, and we're couch-surfing in Colorado waiting out hurricane season. Thanks so much for watching and by all means let us know how your trip goes once things return to normal in the world.

Great video guys! Looks like you’re having a great cruising season! Enjoy, and stay safe. It’s a CV-19 shit show here in the states.

Hi Jim. Yes, we know. We're here in Colorado for a few months since insurance dictates that we be hauled out for hurricane season (in the Caribbean). But we'll be back at it come October.

Enjoyable video thanks - how exactly was the yacht moored at Cokertme Bay.? Looked unusual

    • @SailingTalisman
      @SailingTalisman  4 роки тому

Hi Paul. It was a bit of an odd arrangement, with very long laid moorings for bow and stern. They had floats that they'd drag to the side, and to the eye it looked like they might have had one or two sets of lines. In fact there were no less than 10, and how the marinaro kids kept them all straight was a mystery. The sons of the owner who did all the work were crazy dinghy drivers and I've never seen outboards get abused the way these teenagers did. Every movement was done at full throttle, either in forward or reverse. They'd shift the engines in reverse at speed, and most of it was done while standing up. You had to laugh. They never missed a beat.

Have you made it to the Caribbean?

    • @SailingTalisman

Hi DG. Yes, I talked to Kim a month or so ago and we had reservations to haul out at Clarke's Court Marina. But the officials in Grenada did a British-style 6 layer deep process for bringing a yacht to the island that was completely ridiculous on every front, from the "fee" to reserve to paying for medical staff to come on board to geofencing your 1/2 month quarantine area, to making you pick up your groceries (from one of their preferred providers at 300x cost of course). Eventually we gave up and hauled in Antigua. They actually want the cruisers' money there. Anyway, back in Colorado now for hurricane season and will return in October. How are things for you?
