Been on all day with my stihl ms 181 , pull , pull ,pull , tried spray start , sputtered , good spark , I had topped up petrol , air cfilter clean , was ready to give up take it to dealer , checked youtube yet again and came across piddler , tipped out all petrol and checked fuel filter , clean , put in fresh mix , started 3 rd pull , what a relief .
    Thanks so much .

Another simple thing to check if it won’t start/stay running. Pull the muffler off and check the spark arrester screen. If that’s plugged it won’t run right either.

Great video, very straightforward and accurate but I would definitely add "Did you flood it?" at the start of all this. I fix saws that are used by firefighters, so for those of you that consider it "abuse" of a good saw to do things like leave old gas in it, forget to clean the air filter or change the spark plug every so often, you would be traumatized if you could see what my babies have to go through. While I agree compression is a key element, it's not always a likely problem if the saw was running fine the last time you used it. Checking these three things (four if you just stick your thumb over the hole while you're checking spark) will tell you what's wrong with your saw most of the time... unless you're like me and you need additional items on the checklist like:
    - Did you clear the cylinder after Jackwaggin McGee flooded it with about 40 pulls?
    - Is the bar oil compartment full of gas?
    - Is the gas in the bar oil compartment unleaded, or diesel?
    - Is the gas in the fuel tank green?
    - Is the fuel line blocked because the filter body is mysteriously gone and debris is jammed on the end of the tube instead?
    - Did someone give the air filter a heavy handed "oil bathing" because they believe this is the type of system that needs that?
    - Did somebody have a grand ol' time turning all of the carburetor screws in every direction and give up when nothing did what they expected it to?
P.S. ~ In case you're wondering, yes, all of these have true stories behind them.

Actually, it takes 4 things to run an engine. The one you forgot was compression. When you check for spark, put your thumb over the spark plug hole and pull the cord slowly. You'll be able to tell if you have compression.

The sound of the running chainsaw makes me want to play doom. Thanks for sharing. I'm going to check these 3 components out on my own non-running chainsaw (2 years sitting) and see if I can get it going again without a professional needing to work on it.

Yes! Fresh gas mix! I'm lucky that both my weed eaters and all my chainsaws use 32:1. I mix 2 gal at a time in my small round metal can and use it until it's almost gone and dispose of the rest (usually about 8oz). Every time before pouring I stir it by swishing the can (two shooter marbles in the can). This has always worked for me to keep the mix consistent. Some plastic cans I've tried don't work for this because the marble plugs the spout when you pour.

Great video. My brother gave me his Stihl O44, because he could not pull start it. The compression was so strong that he could not pull it fast enough. It has a new spark plug, fresh fuel. I managed to get it to fire, but it would not continue to run and quit before I could get to the throttle control. When it runs it is a monster. the spark plug looks new and the air and fuel filters look good. it may be safer if I remove the bar and chain when attempting to start.

Storage condition. In addition to running all the fuel out don’t forget to loosen the chain a few turns. This saves your crankshaft seals during storage. I also pour out all the gas and add a few ounces of Stihl Moto Mix to the tank and let this gas cycle through the saw until it runs out. Then I put the saw in the full choke position and pull it until it fails to roll over. This gets the last bit of gas out of the system. I do leave the bar oil tank full of bar oil because they have been know to develop cracks if left without oil in them. I clean the oil tanks out with kerosene once a year as part of my regular pm program.

After watching your other video with the Husky 455 and how to tune, I started cleaning it up and although not a part of your video, I found a lot of build up in the muffler, and man what a hard removal....they must have used an impact wrench to torque in the bolts...went ahead and ordered proper screwdrivers from your link to adjust the settings for the carburetor and will be getting to that part when they come in....anyway you are 100% right about the gas...it is awful these days....I try to use only ethanol free, but it still is not the same as years ago. My neighbor has started to use only the premixed high dollar stuff, and he says it is worth it....he cuts a lot of firewood, so he uses more than the average Joe.

30 yrs ago I was a North West Coast Timber Feller we ran Stihl 075's and Husqvarna 100 super 6 1/2 hours a day 6 days a week. Stihl had NO manual chain oiler. Dogged into10 ft Sitka Spruce Snags broke a 404 chain in a week and Pooched a bar in less than a month. Husky = 6 weeks and 6 months respectively. If Husky wont start check type of fuel pickup. If fabric, toss it, replace with Stihl screen style. Running dry in a premix saw is not recommended. When your out of fuel your also out of lubrication. Use recommended oil with fuel stabilizer. At shut down hold throttle wide open while turning off, the excess fuel lubricates rings and cylinder. If run dry and stored dry, one may require new diaphragms that go hard if left long enough.. Insufficient compression is a silent and sudden culprit so check it B4 throwing parts at it. Recommend Premium non ethanol fuel. Shell V Power my go to but not from a blender pump if your anal like me. SAFE SAWING ALL!

There are three thing you need to getbabsawbrunning - compression, spark, fuel and in about that order. I do not disagree with what you said or did but compression is as much of an importance as the other two.

Tom Jones in comments is right . Fuel with ethanol in it turns hygroscopic , meaning the fuel because of ethanol draws moisture from the air of it's surroundings . The water molecules are taken into the molecules of the fuel . The results are not good . Engine won't run right and sometimes not at all or won't idle or start . -------Ernest E. Johnson

ANOTHER SOLUTION: For any other dolts out there...I worked for hours on mine, replaced the spark plug (despite getting sparks when testing my current one), changing the gas, etc. I finally started to bust in to the carburetor based on some other videos I saw to clean it up but noticed on the way after removing the air filter, that the little plastic hose that feeds gas to the engine behind the air filter had come undone, which is also why I saw excess gas collecting at the bottom of the chainsaw. Simply popped the hose back on to the little metal tube it is supposed to be attached to and voila! Hope this helps someone else.

American Piddler I just checked it with my thumb. It’s pretty strong. Doubt that’s the issue. When I tore it down it was running, but wouldn’t idle. Two years and a bunch of decent cuts. Maybe I screwed up the coil, but that’s not worth replacing. I can buy another for $99. $65 for the coil.
