- We put together our Free Company, and just played Oathsworn: Into the Deepwood. It was just Chapter 1, but we tackled the story portion, the encounter, and we're here to tell you what it's like. We also run down who this game might be for...and who it might NOT be for.

3 scenarios in, its my favorite game… love it
That is awesome to hear. I just backed the reprint and will have to wait until at least October but I’m super excited.
We've now got 2 scenarios under our belts, and it didn't feel samey at all. I'm not sure we'd have been able to play enough of it to include in in our Top 10 for 2022 anyway, but it's feeling like a candidate for this year already.
5 in and all I want is another oathsworn copy with a different terrain creeping in. Frozen icelands, rising tides, hellscape, desert spreading
"Book on tape": How to say you're old without saying you are old. ;)
Now, let's all take out our ViewMaster for the full immersive experience. ♥️
To be fair, I also just say I'm old. Now get off my front lawn, ya whippersnapper! 🤣
Game is sooooo goooood! Currently on Chapter 18. I love how every chapter the story and the boss are different. Keep going you will not regret it. So worth it. One of the best games ever!
Chapter 18?! Whoa! So it really keeps maintaining it's enjoyment level through all that? Can't wait. We have played Chapter 2 now as well, and I was impressed with both the story and the different flavor for the encounter.
@@meeple It has maintained it for our group of 4. We have been playing since July. Get in a chapter when we can. We all look forward it.
I really like the idea of a controlled narrative and solid story. Sounds great for a game night with a few friends that enjoy role-playing. Thanks for not spoiling it as well...
It should do that in spades for you. We're now getting ready for Chapter 5, and it's offered an unexpected variety of game experiences. I've been really impressed with that aspect.
Playing encounter 3 and story 4 tomorrow and sooo hyped.
Story of chapter 3 was even more amazing than the first 2 chapters so you guys should look forward to it :)
Oh wow! Now you have me wanting to set up Chapter 3 right now!
@@meeple do it! And then return with whether you agree :-)
@@jonatan2969 Dang it! You're such a tease! 😫
Not to dogpile on the tease factor, but yeah, Chapter 3 is particularly great.
Played this and it was wonderful! All 17 chapters are often sooooo unique. I was really hoping that it would get me to frosthaven’s delivery but I still haven’t been notified of that yet. 😢
So only 17 chapters in, or are there some chapters that don't get played???
I’m very excited to get a second edition copy of this. How did you like the terrain minis? Adds to the experience? Too big - get in the way? I’m debating getting all that or not.
I would say the terrain is going to be a take it or leave it for many people. I personally think it's cool, but I can also see how many would find that it can be a bit cumbersome and get in the way at times. I definitely recommend the miniatures though. I haven't seen the standees or tokens in action, but these figures (especially the bosses) are so cool.
@@meeple thanks for the response! Loving this Just Played format.
I usually always get the terrain packs. It just kind of pushes me into taking the all-in pledge even though I don’t want the modular weapons for the characters. I’ve read horror stories about how switching out limbs of the characters are a bit finicky and can lead to damage.
@@SherlockChromesSFY The terrain is cool in my opinion. I could personally live without the armory bits and pieces. We haven't had many issues with the models holding together with the "push-fit" construction, but I may ultimately glue the standard versions together. I might even have these painted...MIGHT.
@@meeple Yea the armory doesnt really get used in my game group…
But I do like the terrain too… and just absolutely love the minis for the monsters 😍
@@SherlockChromesSFY Actually if you glue everything but the armory pieces they work wonderfully.
I’ve been waiting on this!!
You're a backer? First campaign, or the most recent one?
@@meeple most recent one. Oathsworn wasn’t even on my radar during the first campaign. I totally missed it. So excited to get in on it now. I just have to wait until hopefully no later than October.
@@Jsleezy_2000 Well don't spoil yourself with too many videos of gameplay. We tried to keep this video as spoiler-free as possible, but our next one will probably be less so. 😉
You're in for a treat once you get it!
@@meeple definitely skipping any play throughs and unboxing. I just like hearing the overall impressions. I’m just hoping the standee version doesn’t detract from the experience at all. I had to be a little budget conscious with this one.
I’d really like to hear Jeremy’s take on this game.
Oh, I see how it is. Our opinions not good enough. 😉 He's about 4 chapters in, and sounds like he's loving it. Once we've all played quite a bit more, we might do a team review.
@@meeple A team review sounds great!
Incisive overview.
So glad I backed it. I want to sleep for a year.
Story game? Ick, no thanks.
But even though I will never buy nor have any interest in playing this game, you did a great review of it.
Thanks guys!
Well thank you very much for watching! I gotta say though, don't judge it before you try it. I'm not a HUGE story game fan either, but I'm thinking it's because they're often not done terribly well. This one has been a joy to play, and 2/3 of every session is a big boss encounter. The story part serves to just build up to that in a way. To each their own though. Thanks again.
@@meeple My biggets problem with story-based board games is that I also run role-playing games. There has never been (nor likely will ever be) a pre-printed board game that can even come close to the possibilities and options of a true role-playing game where nothing is pre-printed and everything is possible. To me, any story board game (regardless of how complex) is nothing more than a "Choose Your Own Adventure" book.
But that's a "me" problem. ;)
@@gmscott9319 Totally get where you're coming from. Nothing quite compares to a great DM with killer story-telling skills. But so many people don't have access to that, or the willingness to participate in everything that RPGs have to offer. Plus, the story/narrative in this game is a cut above typical fare. Well written, and very well spoken by the actor they got to do it.
