Jet 12" Jointer/Planer Long Term Review

- I've had the Jet JJP-12HH jointer/planer for nearly a decade and it has served me well. But it is not without fault. I'll go over why this machine is perfect for the small woodworking shop I have, what are the key features, and show you how to surface lumber with it.

I've never seen a helical head like that before, very cool. I dont know how but you seem so calm and gentle yet have a confident perfectly audible clear voice. you seem to speak slow and relaxed yet every word you say has a purpose and you get so much info through to me in so much fewer words than others would use. and then on top you dont miss any details. nice machine reminds me of my highschool shop class haha. We need car reviews my brotha!

I didn't even know about this unit. I bought an 8" Jet bench grinder in the 80s. They couldn't even make the outside wheel shields match the wheel housings, lol. That was when Jet was mainly into material handling stuff. Their warehouse was about a mile from my present home in Tacoma, WA. A couple of years ago, it was finally repainted and the Jet logo disappeared. It's now a brewery. Jet really upped their game over the decades. I roll my eyes at Grizzly that have motor rewinding and surface grinding operations to "fix the crap we buy and apply our name to".

I've had this machine for a few years now and have used it many times. The 12" jointer is the best function. The planer, at least for me, sucks. Boards get stuck part way through on half the boards. I've adjusted the roller tension many times, replaced the rubber roller twice and danced between either a lot of snipe with higher tension or virtually no snipe with boards getting stuck. I've kept the table clean and waxed.
I just bought a 5HP 20" helical planer and that's what I'll use from now on but keep the JJP-12HH for the jointer function. I'd think twice before buying this if you're in the market. I'll only buy a one function machine going forward.
Great review, you convened me to get the Jett 12 like yours, however, even though I would loved to upgrade to the carbide inserts, just couldn’t fit in into my budget at this time
I’ve had the same machine for the past 4-5 years and have very similar thoughts. If I had more shop space, I’d upgrade to a 20” planer and stand-alone 8-12” jointer, but this combo unit has served me well for years.

I bought one in uk it was the JET 310 12" exactly the same as yours except without the helical cutting block, after a year of VERY light use the motor packed up. I contacted the company where one rep accidentally told me there was a fault in the motors (they were accidentally honest with me!!) and the motors were all being upgraded, however I had one of the older motor models that had the fault. The company would not have entertained me if this employee had not made the mistake in telling me about the flaw in the older motors. I had asked the employee to email me the info about the motors and he did and without this leverage they were going to charge me £300 to supply a new motor, however after making my case that the original motors were flawed they agreed to send me out a brand new motor free of charge. Phew!! The new motor is in and seems to be working very well although it has hardly been tested yet over time. The other thing is, I find the feed system to be rubbish for a machine this expensive. The rubber roller is useless and the steel roller is made of really soft metal and wears down fast. The good thing about the planer is that there is simply no snype, it seems to handle that well. I actually also like the fence, it's simple but works perfectly and is easy to set accurately. One of the best things is how it converts between thicknesser and planer, you don't have to remove anything, not even the fence.
YOU ARE A FOOL FOR TAKING THE GUARD OFF!!! I DON'T CARE HOW USED TO IT YOU SAY YOU HAVE BECOME, IT ONLY TAKES 1 MILLISECOND TO ZIP THROUGH YOUR HAND. VERY FOOLISH DECISION!!
Please note also, in order to use this it is ESSENTIAL to use a VERY powerful dust/chip extraction system (minimum 1500 cm/s/^2) or the machine will clog up very quickly, so factor that into the cost of this machine, it's not just the planer thicknesser you also need a really powerful suction. None of the cheap ones will be enough, trust me, it will just ruin the machine.
All in all, it does the job but it's definitely not without it's flaws.
I have the same exact model Jet jointer/planer. I concur with nearly all you said. Mine is only 8 years old and appears slightly better fit and finish. I previously had an excellent Shopsmith 12” planer with variable speed feed and an 8” long-bed Grizzly jointer with segmented carbide cutter head. The Jet combo machine beats the Grizzly jointer in near,y every way except the cutter head guard. The 25 year old Shopsmith planner could hold its own against the Jet and I really miss the variable speed feed mechanism. That said I find the Jet very capable and hard to beat.

Want a helical head? I bought mine with steel knives 8-9 years ago. Back then it was cheaper to retrofit a Bird head ( a much, much better head than jet) i love this machine

I have the smaller 10" version and the only complaint I have is the hit and miss approach To adjusting the infeed table so the planner tables are coplanar. It took me about three days with an attempt on each day. All the best
Going thru the anslysis now, 2 machines or 1, I have the room, but I really like this machine.
i have a King 6" jointer and a Dewalt 12.5" planer and have been thinking about upgrading to a combo unit. I have a smallish shop so having 1 tools vs 2 would free up some floor space. But i'm not sure if i want to go with a 15" planer. Thanks for the video.
Nice straight forward video. similarly priced to the Hammer/felder; an thoughts about buying the hammer...The Hammer in NOT portable which is a requirement in my small shop
Very helpful and well done episode. Thank you. Conclusion for me is to buy this machine instead of my next motorcycle. But do you know if there are services to hire that will do the planing & jointering for me for a fee. I have 7 eight foot Brazilian boards I would like to have cleaned up for me so I can make a table out of them. I would love to pay for this or be able to rent the equipment for a short term until I can buy the whole thing and put it into my shop. Love the roller cart you have too.
It's almost the same cost as the Hammer and SCM equivalents now. If this were as cheap as it was in 2009 it's be a good choice against those more expensive options.
Great video! I have the exact same machine in my garage shop. Had it for 8 or 9 years now. Love it. However, it has recently developed a problem. When planing, boards were not of consistent thickness. I noticed as soon as the stock would reach the cutterhead, the planer table would move downward the slightest bit. Obviously it should not move at all. I did have it locked. Also noticed when it's locked the height adjusting wheel has just lest than 180 degrees free play in it. You can turn it almost a half turn . Doesn't seem normal. Called Jet and they were no help. Searched online and no luck. I ordered two new plastic bevel gears in case they are worn, but they are on back order for 2-3 months. Any idea what might be causing this? I plan to flip it onto its back to get a better look inside. Can't access that area very well by removing the back service panel. Thanks in advance for any assistance.

This is exactly like a machine offered by hammer. Jay Bates has a review video of his machine. The only difference is the dust collection on the hammer version... never mind, the dust collection is exactly like the machine that hammer sells!

Ive owned my Jet for about 5 years. I I don't like the ribbed beds. Material just doesn't slide very easy on it. The jointer tables are heavy and the helper springs don't help much. My machine was missing the fence hinge pivot pin. The power feed belt has come off numerous times. Today after planing for 20 minutes the motor shut off. It was very hot to the touch. The helical head is amazing. Not too happy about the rest of this machine.

Hi Joseph. You are going to enjoy this new tool. Took 4 people lifting it on to the mobile base. It's actually a Rockler base.
I've seen people use engine cranes, and route the straps underneath and around the bottom, would u recommend this method?

I use bees wax on my table. it produces a slippery low friction surface without dust sticking to it.
whats the longest board you can face joint?
One of the complaints I've heard about this type of machine is that they tend to lose their trueness due to all the transforming between operations. Any thoughts on that? Also, if you were buying today, how much would you consider the Hammer over the Jet? Thanks for a great review - nice to see after ten years.
Hey Dan. Thanks for the post. I haven't experienced any loss in true. It's pretty simple system. There are a number of carriage like bolts that adjust up and down with lock nuts that the jointer table sits on. Not much to go wrong. Haven't had any issues.
I would definitely look at the Hammer. I love their table extensions which are the shortcoming to all the convertibles. Would consider the 16" if I could afford it.
@@georges8348 Actually, that is not true. Infeed and outfeed tables on the Jet move independently of each other in a parallelogram configuration.
Have you ever experienced the diverter in the dust hood sliding while jointing causing the dust collection to be ineffective?
Hi Jeremy. Great question. Yes, I know what you're talking about. I have a friend with the identical jointer and he was having the problem you described. After much troubleshooting with him we figured out his dust collection system (which is more powerful than mine) was creating so much air flow the sheet metal diverter inside the hood was not seating properly. It was essentially flying like a wing due to high air speeds. Consequently it would not pick up chips and effected planing performance. We drilled a small hole in the side so he could fit a shop-made plug/dowel to fix it in the seated position. Then when converting back to jointer he removes it and reinserts it once convert (different hole) that holds it down in the jointer position.
Nice review. Is your Jet manufactured in China or Taiwan? It is unfortunate that American Companies no longer manufacture their products in America. I am glad you have had success with your Jet jointer.

Rubber roller renewer/ cleaner '''Martin Yale 200 Rubber Roller Cleaner Spray 13 Ounces''' a must.
Simple green works well on rubber too. I used in it in R/C racing to soften rubber tires. Give it a try.
Supposedly ridges don't reduce friction, they just double friction over half the surface area. Not sure which view is true.
Think about ice skates, same concept. Unsure how well it works in a wood working machine tho.
So are you going to keep it or you think it's time to change?

I am thinking to buy JET 12"planer like you or HAmmer A3 31 planer. The table did not start to wear? Because I read that the table are striped , therefore the wood not contact on a big surface.But if we thinkig, then realize that the table will wear faster about a tenth of it comes in contact with a surface. What do you think? Where I live the hammer a3 31 costs 1000 UDS more .I can't chose , because if I think long term I rather buy the hammer.But I like JET as well.
I do not know disadvantage of this that the knife on JET axis is supported on one side.The Hammer knifes supported from 3 sides.I don't know if it matters in long term.What do you think?
Hi Gabor. Thanks for posting. I am guessing English is not your first language... I'm not sure I understand all your questions. The Jet has been a great machine for me. No wear issues other than normal cutter wear. Also the belt has worn after 11 years needed replacement. The bed is flat, maintains tolerance, and is easy to make adjustments. Cuts as well today as the day I first got it. I can't speak for the hammer. It looks like a very nice machine and has lots more accessories. But it continues to be more expensive. Great review. I have had my unit for just over a year when I down sized my shop. I am having trouble with chip clearing when planing a wide board. The chips get jammed against the last fixed bar and stop the board. To answer the first obvious question - I moved the dust collection system from my old shop and it handled a 20 planer without any problem. What has your experience been? Any suggestions?
Might have a possibility for you. I have a friend with a similar Jet and was experiencing really poor chip collection. Even tho he has more powerful cyclone than I do. We figured out that the velocity of the air was enough to make the movable vane in the jet chute to "fly". The vane just uses gravity to transition from planer to joiner and the increase wind speed prevented it from seating. Simple solution was to open another blast gate to lower wind speed. Or put a pin/dowel to hold the vane in place. I've not had any issues with mine. Good luck Tom.
That was it! I temporarily pinned the flapper to the correct position and it worked fine. I'll have to fiddle with things to get a long term fix but I'm on the scent now. Thank you very much! 🙂🙂

Jet has exploded the price on these since you got yours. And their HH vs. standard cutterhead has never made any sense price wise (at one point, they sold the helical cutterhead and bearings on their site - according to a forum review - for half of the price difference between the two machines). As of right now, (guessing they have an MAP policy), this machine is $2800 for straight cutters and $4300 for helical head. A byrd helical head is $750, so the price difference still makes no sense.
I went to look at these at IWF when they first came out, and remember about 1/3rd of buyers (at $1699 back then) hated the machines and used them as a jointer only, and the other 2/3rds liked them. I came upon your review in anticipation that I might want to still get a combo machine and was hoping their prices hadn't doubled, but they've doubled. Bummer.
Still shocked that the upcharge for the helical head is twice the cost of the actual head and bearings for a byrd head - it makes no sense, and I'm a former sort of half satisfied jet tool owner (i owned a jet 18 inch cast bandsaw that was OK, but very inaccurately made and ultimately cost me a lot when I had to settle with a local buyer at a price they'd tolerate for a machine that had some problems that a machine shop needed to correct (in my machine's case, the cast wheels were a hundredth out of round, causing the bearings to refuse to stay set resulting in a cut that had striations in it a good fraction of a hundredth deep.
I believe the feed rate is also different so you have to swap gearing and belts for the feed rollers, which brings the cost a little closer to the upcharge. The huge cost difference is why I never considered this, and have stuck with my powermatic jointer and lunchbox planer.
@@clobbyhardy I just upgrade my JJP-12 with a Byrd cutterhead. The cost of the new head was $1,089. Although the straight blade design uses a 20 FPS feed rate and the HH model uses 20 FPS, I did not change out the gearing and find no problem operating the converted unit at 20 FPS.

What did you use for your mobile base?
Rockler. They make a nice heavy weight base. It works well.

I think it still is the best choice on the market. It is a full 12" cut. The 12" size matches the resaw capacity of my bandsaw. It's a lot of money (was for me as well a decade ago) but cost per year is reasonable.
I just got this machine and came to find out the manual calls for a 30 amp breaker? Is that what you use?
Interesting. I'm not an electrician but I have each hot leg of the 220v on a separate 20amp breaker. Never had it throw the breaker.

COME ON NOW, rust or discolored surface is a sign of pride when it comes to these tools. Apply lanolin spray, and forget it. '''FLUID FILM AS 2 Fluid Film AS Lubricant, Corrosion Inhibitor''', an ugly tool is the best tool.
