He didn't need to audition for Stannis. The role is his, by right.
rationalfreak nice
+rationalfreak When he said "be yourself" as a tip for an audition, he really meant it.
He rose to fame for his portrayal of macbeth, stannis is basically macbeth
+rationalfreak they'll bend the knee or be slaughtered.
haha nicely said
Stannis does a pretty great Stephen Dillane impression.
lol..you have made my day sir..😂😂😁
and tywin gives a good charles dance impression
It is customary, to kneel when interviewing a king
They kinda forgot Stannis was king.
They bend the knee or they will be destroyed
I know he's the king - my editor died for him.
probably the best casting in the history of cinematography, he doesnt play Stannis, he is Stannis
***** Or Stannis is him?
Chen Alex Wow, I see what you did there, you took the one person, and switched it with the other, so that we looked at it from another perspective.
What a twist. I can tell you're a devious man. Well done.
lol for real 😃
Nah, Charles Dance as Tywin Lannister is even better
He's up there, but the best casting in the history of cinematography has to be Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool.
"Tonight, the part of Stephen Dillane will be played by Stannis Baratheon."
Steven McBrien haha genius
hahahhahahahah
had to relike this comment!
"I haven't done anything devious at all''
10/10,Would kneel
pizzarelaguy He's completely honest.
So apparently Stannis isn't dead, he became an actor.
hHHhHhhhahahaha...savage
"Something by Tarkovsky, probably Stalker" Patrician taste 10/10 would bend the knee.
This guy acts and talks like a lord IRL. Not many people have that kind of grace.
Axhol3Rose hello old friend
He is not a lord. He’s a king
@@jaimelannister1797 I didn't know You had a 'Flea Bottom accent', Ser Jaime
Maybe Charles Dance. Shame we didn't get a scene with these two...
He hasn't read the books, though by some miracle, his mannerisms happened to be exactly like GRRM's description of Stannis. Always blunt, concise, says exactly what he thinks, doesn't spare anyone's feelings and above all talented and dutiful.
When you cut a Pirate's Fingers and he becomes your most loyal friend and Advisor, would kneel 10/10
@@romanianturk2101 Well, Davos didn't serve Stannis because he loved the punishment. He served because Stannis raised him to a status Davos could have never hoped for
@@romanianturk2101 Davos was not a pirate, he was a smuggler!
My knee refuses to unbend after watching this.
He wanted to be a fireman when he was growing up? How ironic.
+bradhuygens Savage af
His sister died when he was little that's why
In my defense Melisandre did convince me to do what I did...
Poor Kerry I. Baratheon was almost incinerated at the stake and scar for live until Stephen Jefferson Baratheon was there at Caste Black, Antonine Wall & save her.
Mannis is true firefighters rangers.
bradhuygens I thought he said farmer lol
"Something by Tarkovsky, probably Stalker". That's why I love Stannis & Stephen.
It is amazing. Dillane just tripled my respect for him, as if it wasn't big enough already. :P
A very Stannis film. Brooding, dark and serious.
I love how that was the only question that really engaged him
I can totally picture Stannis sitting in his projection room in Dragonstone watching philosophically complex Soviet movies.
ALL HAIL STANNIS THE MANNIS, THE ONE TRUE KING OF WESTEROS
Fireman..........irony.
Haha i see what you did there
Chris M HAHAHAHHAHA THE GEM
***** That's what Shireen should have done.
Chris M I actually lol-ed. Wow.
Ricardo Santos Lol, your funny ;p
Stephen Dillane does such an awesome job as Stannis. Such a shame D&D hate his character so much.
Fucking agreed
CommonSense I really have no idea. They never said why, they only admitted to disliking him. Three guesses who their favorite is?
CommonSense It certainly factored into why he was killed. Remember that in the books Brienne is in the Riverlands and Stannis is just beginning the siege of Winterfell. Shireen and Selyse are still at Castle Black. It is unlikely that Stannis will be the one to sacrifice her.
+Martin Tatere he'll kill him off, though i doubt as sloppily and i doubt it will be during the battle of Winterfell
Chance Brown I figure he'll most likely win at Winterfell and die fighting the White Walkers.
God he's so Mannis even when he's not #MannisLyfe
Damn gurl you are so fine!
hahhahaha
He doesn't need background on Stannis, he is Stannis.
I always wanted Stannis to be the king tbh
He still will be.. Have faith in the red God! i still believe Stannis lives. Ned stark wanted him to be king. Ned stark died for him.... That has to count for something
+Denny Kaleal I do
He's dead lol, he was one of my faves, but he's dead.
Read the books... he is the king and still alive
Angilberto9720 Dillane did not enjoy being on Game of Thrones. I’m hoping that’s why they killed him off.
Holy shit, he truly is Stannis, isn't he?
lol..i feel you
They honestly couldn't have found anyone else better for the part.
"Understand what you're talking about" - wow, wish I had that advice in highschool :/ haha
What did you expect from Stannis? HAHAH
Wow he really is Stannis Baratheon.
Has he read the books? He's basically Stannis brought to life.
I think he hasn't. For all I know he said he "didn't get the character". Probably because of DnD's writing.
@@IronedSide what is dnd??
The directors of GoT
Well if they actually did the character properly, the way he was in the books, Stephen would've played him perfectly.
I would go further than to say Stephen did his best with what was given him, he transcended what was fucking giving him. Stephen turned D and D piss to cold clear water (favorite Stannis line: Robert could piss in a cup and men would call it wine, but I offer them cold clear water and they squint in suspicion).
But that last part- "understand what are you talking about" and throwing that paper was so Stannis-like :D
I love his very last answer. So many people think acting is nothing but memorizing/saying lines, but if you don't know the context of the lines or what's going on between the characters you can't act the part.
Men bend their knees, women bend forward. Stannis the mannis
Sigurd Torvaldsson No
@@ClaireYunFarronXIII Yes
That face he made when he threw the piece of paper @1:03...
Pure Stannis.
What a genuine guy. He brings a tradesman-like grit to the craft of acting that just can't be imitated.
I do wonder sometimes, is Stephen portraying Stannis, or Stannis Stephen...
if Stan is lived in the modern day, he would be Stephan dillane.
Hilarious how much he is actually like his character. He's basically a Stannis who smiles every once in a while.
The way he delivers the line at 0:26 almost seems to be in-character.
It's like my knees are bending on their own
Stannis only agreed to do this because it was 60 seconds.
Lol
I bet Benioff and Weiss just had a conversation with Dillane and was like "Do you want to play Stannis on GoT? Easiest gig in the world for you. Just be yourself."
LearnSomeTruth
Unfortunately,it seems that Benioff and Weiss never had a conversation with Stephen.
*****
I agree completely. They had great character substance from the books and imo a great actor to make it work on the show but HBO decides to utterly destroy Stannis's moral character and kill his daughter who is safely sitting at Eastwatch atm.
And obviously they did it by choice. Hopefully they don't ruin things even more.
+Drovedestroyer I don't the show runners read the books honestly
+LearnSomeTruth what more is there to ruin lol? Honestly not much
LearnSomeTruth
“Hopefully they don’t ruin things more.”
That comment has aged well.
The biggest honor right now in England, is to be knighted by Stannis Dillane. Even the queen can't surpass his legitimacy.
Holy crap. Stephen just won 100000000000 of likes from me when he mentioned taking Andrei Tarkovskiy's "Stalker" to an island.
***** Its about a "Zone" in the place where a meteorite fell. It is rumoured that there is a room in the middle of the Zone, which grants a wish if you reach it. However its highly dangerous and you need a Stalker to help you get to it. Along the way you feel doubt and question yourself whether you need it all or not. It is quite a slow paced, meditative movie that, in essence, reflects on life and existence. Also quite a lot of symbolic moments in the movie.
***** Wow, that's awesome! I am glad to have inspired you! There are very few directors like Tarkovskiy and Stalker is a movie that very few directors can produce now. And about the Writer, at the very least, he redefined the purpose of his life in the end.
Ahh shit, he IS Stannis. That's fucking hilarious.
Stannis Baratheon plays as Stephen Dillane, sooooo well
Stephen Dillane actually is Stannis Baratheon confirmed.
My knees may have shattered just now from his epicness!
I love him so much. He's so awesome.
"I'm completely honest" Somehow, I am compelled to believe him. Stephen Dillane and Stannis truly are one !
my god he even talks like Stannis in real life. what a badass
It's like watching Stannis doing a bad impersonation of an actor.
Stephen! Stephen! STEPHEN!
"Oh, be yourself..." You can practically feel the boredom.
I fucking love this man, he's just so chilled.
This man who played Lord Halifax and the brilliance he did as Thomas Jefferson. Man's an bloody genius of an actor.
He's a Tarkozsky and Stalker fan? Holy shit he is the Mannis
Two people don't understand that it is customary to kneel when surrendering to a King
"Getting a job in the first place" that's my man 🖐️
kudos to the GOT casting director. He found an actor who doesn't give a shit about neither the show nor the books which could've been a dealbreaker. BUT this attitude of Dillane makes him the perfect "Stannis" as the character is very narrow minded and focused on his own things
Is it okay if I think he is really attractive? #stannisthehotmannis
***** Lmao, I'm reverse Meyn Trant. >.<
***** SOMEONE AGREES!!
Mannis is the best looking man in Westeros with the dopest beard.
Konstanz Von Zehnder same here, girl XD
Same here.
He even kinda acts like Stannis the mannis is real life lol. I really hope he's not dead and he's around for the next season. Stannis, Brienne, Pod, Sansa, and Theon would make for a fun traveling group
***** it would be so epic. And awkward lol
***** terrible decision killing him off. He was the only character who walked the lines of being a hero and villain.
1:03 Drops mic
A good role does not wash out the bad, nor a bad the good.
that authoritative voice,so commanding, perfect man for stannis role.
"'What are your tips for auditioning?' Be yourself." You're goddam right, Mannis.
1:01 "understand what you're talking about"
Apparently Dillane didn't understand what was going on during his tenure as Stannis on Game of Thrones hahahaha
I am dying - in the best way: every time the destiny makes the hard wind blow from north-east I need a happy boost, and then I come here just for the Stannis jokes. It really can't be helped: they are better than any medication! Poor Dillane, I sincerely hope he is vise and busy enough to stay away from these boards since he has such mix feelings about Game of Thrones and the very unclear direction for character Stannis. But the rest of us need to go here for more jokes and knee bending once in a while, and it never fails to spirit my mind. So hilarious. Needless to say: I personally admire and respect Stephen Dillane as an actor with tons of talent and integrity - he has such an impressive history of different and difficult roles on his merit list that he really has placed himself for ever among the best. Still ... he is doing his duty.
He would fit perfectly in Stalker.
My knees are bending by themself
Too much mannis for me.
That last answer is so Stannis the way he said understand what you are talking about then threw the paper
This is so awesome. I love him -- absurdly perfect. Dorkface.
man is dripping character all over that room haha
awesome for tarkovsky real gent
Stannis has no time for your silly questions.
He could easily make any role involving a lord king or something based on the crusades etc. he has some sort of grace to his voice
It would be so cool if Stephen, Gethin Anthony (actor for Renly) and Mark Addy (actor for Robert) started a podcast together. But the catch is that they would play their characters, with Renly being suave, Robert being loud and obnoxious with Stannis talking bluntly. It would be as if once they died in the show, they somehow appeared in a podcast room, and decided to bond while doing some gaming or reviewing movies. It would reunite the actors, and show some neat interactions with the brothers we didn't see in the show or books.
The answers were so serious lol.
I'd expect nothing less from the one true king.
When I saw Stephen Dillane in The Greatest Game Ever Played I thought he would make a cracking good Sherlock Holmes. Someone needs to do it in the original time period and just follow the stories in the book. That's not to say I didn't like the Cumberbatch version, very good adaptation. I also thought of Timothy Spall as Watson. I know it sounds weird but I think he could pull it off quite successfully.
An excellent observation, you are the first person I've seen suggest that. I believe that would work very very well. Hope it happens.
i miss Stannis.
his banners shall fly again once george finishes the next damn book lol.
Knowing about his childhood that "Probably a Fireman" answer is heavy dude.
Andrei Tarkovsky fan spotted. A modern STALKER with Stephen Dillane (he could play "the writer" or "the professor" well).
Dude is so upfront and brutally honest that is what I think is so amazing about Stephen Dillane
Stephen Dillane has the same favorite film as me. MY KNEES.
damn....... if only he had an army... i'll follow this guy
Stannis Baratheon does a good job of playing this Stephen dillane character
Never knew Stannis could act Stephen Dillane so well.
Damn, I could just imagine his voice while rereading all the POVs in the books with Stannis in them, He TRULY is the Mannis.
I was gonna say that he is just Stannis in real life too, then he said when auditioning "just be yourself" and it made so much sense
I just loooove his accent
Umm DILLANEGASM! HEAVEN!
0:40 STANNIS SMILES??!! NOW I'VE SEEN EVERYTHING
Great Actor
I fucking love how dismissive of this he is. Perfectly cast as Lord Stanis.
"What are your tips for auditioning...be yourself"
That explains a lot.
He and Tywin were the most believable characters
Magnifique acteur.
He is so fucking handsome, I love him
FIREMAN!!!!!! 5 year old Stephen wanted to be a fireman xD i'm done
oh.. I thought he said "farmer" lolol
Nemesis Shaman that's anti climactic :/ lol
Melisandre would be disappointed
The role is his, more than any man living
littlefinger's actor heard him practicing his Stannis voice and thought "Yeah, I'll do that as well, I can probably pull it off" lol
I saw him in Zero Dark Thirty recently and his English accent wanted to come out so badly.
60 seconds was all they could get with him. At all. Stannis, I'm mean Stephen, has things to do.
Stannis through and through haha! I think he was just being himself the whole time paying Stannis
Stannis the Mannis!
Because everybody is just referrending to stannis ...I am going to appreciate Steve in the Tunnel
He truly is Stannis! Thank you for being you!
One of the brilliant actors of our age
