Another sign of a bad boss: they can't give you concrete examples of why your performance is good or bad. This means your performance rating was made unfairly and/or they don't pay attention to your work.
Great points. Sad part for a boss that uses abusive tactics like screaming and yelling constantly, is that workers will judge priority based on response.
Ugh! I can't imagine having a boss scream and yell. So unprofessional. I get it that as a manager it's easy to get upset, but there are productive ways to handle the situation. Are you currently in a toxic work culture?
I worked for Boeing for 22 years. My boss yelled, cursed, slammed the door in my face on many occasions. He gave me the worst performance review ever, then retired in Feb 2020. Previous bosses over the years always gave me an over-exceed in several categories. When the pandemic hit, they used the evaluation that put me out of a job, infact with him being a finance guy, he knew how to work the numbers to give me the lowest rating out of 22 others in my role. When I appealed and explained my bosses actions, I was told by HR who did the investigation that the performance review is what they were looking at. My witnesses confirmed his actions were true, but I was told that my performance rating during that year is what they were looking at. I am still beside myself on what happened and I was let go from a company that I loved and co-workers that I enjoyed working with so much. I know that I was dismissed and my career ended by error based on his actions and how it affected my performance. : - (
My first major job out of school I was submerged into a very toxic work environment. We didn't have an HR department and none of the partners would listen to my concerns :(. It was such a bad experience but I am happy to say, after watching Prof Heather's video's I was able to find a new position with a company that I love. They don't prepare you for toxic work places in school. Thanks for this Video!
Thanks for sharing Kristen. They most definitely don't prepare you for toxic work environments in school. I'm so thrilled to hear you landed a position with a company you love. :)
Mine has 6 out of 7. For 4 years I have climbed towards a leadership (ish) and it has broken me down mentally. I have initiated so many ideas and projects to make this org better. Lack of direction, no boundaries, no clear expectations, pushing me beyond my limit etc are all problems. I’m about to put in my notice at the beginning of September and go get some certificates I have been needing. I come home now everyday sooooo stressed and drained. I realized after giving so much of myself for so long without having my needs addressed and terrible communication in the org that leaders refuse to change despite all my efforts. I have been having panic attacks for months. Also, I get paid terribly- which isn’t even the main reason I’m leaving. I feel so broken down.
@@ProfessorHeatherAustin Yes. My Manager and I do not see eye to eye. I believe he hopes that I will back down and follow what he says even though I know it does not work. I have always been one to voice my opinions and will continue to do so. In the past, Managers like him have come in and gone cause their own arrogance puts them in a bad light. Same thing will happen this time. I will just keep on chugging along while sending out my resume. BTW, I bought your program and have been learning quite a bit.
It's unfortunate to hear that you are experiencing a toxic work environment. HR administrators have a responsibility to ensure that employees are treated fairly and that the company follows proper protocols and procedures. If you feel that your HR administrator is not doing their job and is taking the side of management, despite evidence to the contrary, it may be worth bringing your concerns to their attention. You could also consider speaking with a higher-level manager or a legal professional to discuss your options. Remember, you have the right to work in an environment that is safe and free from discrimination and harassment.
Toxicity reduces satisfaction and we need more awareness about it. It is essential in organizational behavior. Glad to see you again Austin mam abt addressing this topicKeep going😇😊✌. Perfect 👌 Spot on 🎯 heather 👍 I’d experienced all the 7 signs 🤷♂️ But as I’m aware of the same Now I’m on my way to get my dream job Yay! 😎 Thanks for sharing 🤝
One org I worked for had a 75% per year turn over rate. While working there, I helped lower that number to 40% by fixing hundreds of IT related problems. By fixing the IT related problems, upper management was able to focus on lower management and correct those problems. Staff processes that took an hour was brought down to 30 minutes. Communication accountability was a big thing that we corrected. Found out that many of the lower management was ignoring emails altogether. It's amazing what happens when you finally get an inhouse IT guy that is welling to fight the good fight.
I’ve worked for the same small family run business for 15 years, the ‘boss’ is just the worst and ticks every box of a toxic boss and the whole place is toxic since the manager who was excellent left about 4 years ago. It is a specialist retail job so I worry about what else I can do but I now know I NEED to get out as I feel complete drained of my life force at the end of each day and wake up with complete dread, it’s making me depressed, stressed and anxious. We’re constantly gaslighted if we bring up any issues. I hate it.
Wow, thank you for answering my calling. I've been so stressed for several weeks and on the fence if i should be sticking to my current situation. This video hit 6/7 warning signs. HR does what's best for the company Aka, they're not on employees side, they are there to calm us down and prevent us from suing. There are thousands of toxic job environments, we just have to pick our battles
Lol.. I know they say to give notices when leaving a job. However, I’ve learned that sometimes it’s just better to leave. These people know what they’re doing. I don’t play childish games with people put in positions of authority due to being a relative or the owners sugar baby. The last situation I was in, I noticed the bad behavior and I never said a word about it because it wouldn’t have got me anywhere but drama so I ghosted the place. I left one day and never returned. No complaint ( I mean who is there to complain to?) the company only has 10 employees, well now 9 since making my exit. Possible 8 since one is due to have a baby anytime now. Lol 😂 look! I give respect when it’s earned. They were on a 90 day probationary period and they failed. I’ve dealt with these type of work environments in the past. I’m no longer in the business of arguing with bullies, now I just go away. #superempath #supernovanotworthit #tooktheirpoweraway
I would like everyone's advice on this. I work as cashier for b&m stores. I was badly verbally abused by my manger and ill treated. I couldn't sell acholol to underage but got punished instead of being praised for not selling to underage. He's shouts at you infront of everyone...its very humiliating. He has behaviour problems. I have won star performer certificates twice for outstanding customer communications and to be treated this way by a bad managers where HR agrees and supports a bad manager with behavioural problems. I have found it to be very shocking how HR handled it and shurved it under the carpet as if nothing happened. I'm deeply mortified how cunningly HR dealt with it... and to lie I handed in my notice of termination. A Toxic Work Environment starts with a HR admistrator that takes the side of Management, despite clear evidence to the contrary....
