This was one of the first upgrades i did to my RV after purchasing it, after watching your install video and review. And I 100% agree with everything you said in this video. It’s really hard to think of a big issue negative with this product. I highly recommend anyone looking for a keyless entry lock purchase this one! Thanks for the update video. I’ve been on the fence with keyless entry but you made it easy to become comfortable. I’ve learned so much from your videos and done lots of modification because of what I’ve learned. The bed step is the best and the A/C hack is cool.

Great review. I wish I had seen this before I purchased my rv lock over 2 years ago. The one suggestion I have for all inside door handles is to make the handle a different color than black. Many guests have been unable to find the handle to open the door when inside the rv. I put some white tape on the handle to resolve this issue.
Great follow up review. Your video production quality is top notch and improves with each season. Thank you for being a definitive authority on all things DIY RV. We did go with the RVLock based on the diversity of products offered. The keyless baggage latches, Bluetooth module, and the matched rv key latch filled all the demands of what I was trying to achieve with an upgraded locking system.
Thanks for the update. We had a different brand keyless lock which ended up failing rather quickly. After watching your original video I replaced it with the Carmtek a year ago. Like you, we've been very happy with it. The ONLY PROBLEM we've had is our dogs sometimes paw at the door when they want to go out and have switched off the FOB (or muted the button beep). That forces us to be sure we remember our door code in case our FOB doesn't work.

I've never heard of Carmtek lock until seeing this video, nor did I know any company makes keyless locks for compartment doors. I went with a keyless lock from Global Link back in 2020. They are the primary entry door lock supplier for most RV manufacturers. The nice thing about their locks is you can get compartment door locks that are keyed to match the entry doors. My keyless entry door lock has been flawless for the 4 years I've had it.
We bought our 2021 jayco eagle REOK which had it on already. No issues just need to replace battery like any thing with batteries. We just manually unlock it .
We have a Thor Windsport 34J and will be looking at replacing the OEM keyed entry with the new 10 digit RV keyless entry system for Class A's. I only hope that the required dimensions will fit to our current rig set up. I very much enjoy watching your videos and more so appreciate your honesty and complete assessment.
Unfortunately, based on the 'Can't replace' style of lock listed on the Amazon site, ours is one of the ones that this lock doesn't appear able to replace. Bummer!.. I was so looking forward to replacing our current vertical handle pull style entry lock with this one. Thanks for the information anyway!
I’m sure I speak for others when I say thanks for the honest review. That pull bar you have, can you close the door with that instead of the lock handle?
For my Grand Design, I bought the Lippert keyless lock because it ties in to the GD Connect app and I can see the lock status and lock/unlock it from my cell phone app. It's metal with backlit buttons and I was able to program my own code. There are several good locks on the market now, but integrating with the Connect app was important to me.
Thanks Mike, I was going to talk about wireless connectivity in this video but opted to leave it out and touch on that in another, broader video. Makes perfect sense to go with something that integrates… I think that’s going to be a big thing moving forward. Thanks for the input my friend.

Can you do a video showing how to replace the window in a RV door? I have a towable with a frosted window in the door. The only other window on the patio side is above the bed. I'd rather have a window with clear glass and internal shade.
I have this lock. Love everything about it except the install. That flat wire loom, is stiff and hard to manipulate all while lining up both locks and making sure the wires don’t get pinched. Super difficult to do by myself. Then you get it all together only to discover the deadbolt hits and it has to come out, adjustments made, etc etc etc. They really need to change the install process. Also the strike plate that comes with it is basically a piece of soda can. It’s so lightweight. Overall great item. 2 fobs and 4 keys plus additional keypad and lifetime warranty was a shock to me.
Unfortunately the install can be a little cumbersome. I won’t disagree, but they all assemble that way. Until they design a male and female plug system that locks together when screwing the pieces together we might be stuck with the current set up for a while.
@@RVTIPSANDTRAVELS since I was working alone the fix I came up with was I used a short board wrapped in a towel, then used two quick clamps with rubber jaws to clamp the exterior portion tight to the door so I could manipulate the inside half. Also to remedy the cheap strike plate I was able to get a very long brass strike plate at the hardware store that is 9” long, it was predrilled for 6 recessed/flush screws. Took a bit of measuring but that door/lock is rock solid now. Great content. Keep it up.
I would have given this lock a try but by the time i saw your original video i already had purchased the rvlock and it's still going strong but definitely looks like a good product.
I have RVLock and it has operated and worn perfectly. And the door close handle is metal and has not had a single issue. Curious why an extra digit matters so much ?
2 digits actually, the 0 and 9, which gives you many more code options, and really convenient if you want to use a familiar code with those numbers. I’m glad to hear yours has worked well, that has not been the case for a lot of people. Also, up until a few years ago before they had any real competition, they were gouging people for these locks, over $225-$250 for a basic 8 digit lock. It’s hard for me to get behind those types of companies.
@RVTIPSANDTRAVELS cannot comment on their production costs as I have no clue to their labour, production facility, or tax liabilities. But I would say I believe I paid a fair price and did so willingly. Would also add that most people are quietly happy and usually only go hate speech when upset, making a small group seem larger than it is - meaning, not sure rvlock deserves all of the hate it gets online. I also have gotten a great life from the batteries with my fobs and only replace batteries annually.
I completely agree with you on all points... Reviews are left more often when people have bad experiences, vs good. When I finally decided to start looking at door locks for my trailer I found the Carmtek lock and with a little research I found it had more digits, more features, it was better built, no cracking keypads common with RVLock (which they did remedy by the way), the ability to lock both the deadbolt and the handle, the ability to change the volume on the keypad with 1 easy switch instead of having to remember how to do it on the keypad, the ability to turn off the receiver with a simple switch to extend battery life, and it was less money with a lifetime warranty. RV Lock has made some changes to their products over the last few years based on customer reviews, which is something all companies need to do to stay in business. Understand, its not my job on the channel to convince you one way or the other... my job is to give people options. Despite you being happy with your lock, there's no denying RV Lock had a real problem with their keypads, but as I said I'm glad you had a good experience. I have no loyalty to a specific brand... the only loyalty I have on this channel is to my viewers, and I make recommendations based on what I think are good options for those viewers. You are exactly right about the obligation to develop and improve one's product, looks like I benefitted from it with my lock. I almost exclusively use the fob, so maybe I would have more problems if key pad was used more. With my rv being a 2016 I am always looking to improve, modernize, add convenience, etc. as I live in mine M-F for work travel - and content providers with GOOD info like yours is very much appreciated. we just bought an RV from a private party, they have two of these locks installed... i could not find a key to replace the key.. the previous owners gave me one key... and 2 fobs... i contacted carmtek to give me an idea where to get another key..and they said probably just a locksmith. ..so they DID agree to send us two new cylinders if we didn't want to try to get a locksmith to remake our keys. Which is great. .and they didn't charge shipping. I appreciate that, but I do wish we could have an easier way to get more keys!
i can understand that companies who mass produce these products dont always have a solution for things like what youre requesting. most of the time they are not made on site, or subcontracted, so individual parts may be difficult for them to manage while keeping the bills paid. However, I think its awesome that they are working with you and willing to send you parts at no cost. Nobody does that! I work personally with the owner of Carmtek and he's a great guy. you can probably take the key to a locksmith or a hardware store and have it duplicated for less than $5.
Here’s another model specific question. I’ve just installed the Carmteck lock latest model, it looks like the magnetic catch of the door installed on the outside wall of the camper, is no longer catching the door. Looks like I’ll need some spacers…did you have the same issue on yours? Thank you!

I bought a new trailer a few weeks ago. I'd like to possibly get this lock, but I keep finding stuff I need or want. All these gadgets add up. WDH - $400, fridge fan, command hooks, hitch lock, etc, etc, etc. Another $200 here, might have to wait till next summer?
they do add up, thats why you have to enjoy it. I cant tell you how many things I bought over the years. mostly stuff I still use, some stuff I learned I didnt need, but such a fun experience.
Well, I bought one based on the your reviews and video (which are the best produced videos I have seen on RV topics by the way). And all the great reviews in the video comments. But it seems only the bottom lock deadbolt is electric and the top lock is manual with key or from inside the rv. Is that correct? Or is my lock defective?
the electric lock only controls the deadbolt. the handle lock is only controlled by the key and the lever inside the RV. None of the electric locks on the market control the handle lock.
I have an 8 digit lock and after 3years the keypad cracked. I paid $100 on EBay. I also found a company that has replacement keypad for $15 my lock still works fine
I went to buy one - but the model requires the lock to be on the left side of the door (as you approach from the outside) Wheres the one for the right side? What a bummer!!!

Did you really complain about having to carry the remote? Nothing better then pulling up hit the remote grab all your bags and just open the door not fiddle around pushing numbers to unlock it.
Im not really ever approaching the door with my hands full so using the code is just as easy for me. I lose keys a lot too, so I don’t carry a remote because I’m sure I’ll lose that. I rarely use the remote because we hike and bike a lot, so bringing less is much easier for us. I’d also venture to guess that many folks are using the keypad a lot since so many overlays are cracking. I do appreciate your input and for watching our video.

David, they come with 2 so you can remove the old overlay and install the new one. If you can’t find the other one, email them, they’ll send you a new one for free. I talk about this in the video… LIFETIME WARRANTY! Why not take advantage of it?
Aww bummer, I just noticed this company is embossing their website on the lock like the other. That is so stupid and tacky. As if anybody wouldn’t just google the brand and find it without this. Stuff like that looks aftermarket and I hate things that look aftermarket. It’s not a dealbreaker, but it doesn’t look clean and should be eliminated. I still also want to see a keyless option, touch the door handle and it unlocks when a fob is detected nearby, just like a car. Of course my other gripe is, why should we have to retrofit all of this? RV manufacturers should just include it.
For real though. Let’s start an RV company that actually makes trailers with all the little things squared away, that even the “great” manufacturers like Grand Design miss on
Seems totally pointless except for the very rare instances you've mentioned (Having more family members than keys). I've heard a lot of BS hype about "Oh the manufacturers only produce like 5 keys so dealers have an easier time". That's only for the handle. The deadbolts are much more difficult to get into. $200 wasted in my opinion.

We added this lock to our second trailer, and loved it. Just bought a new 5th wheel toyhauler with two doors and will be adding it again.

Great review. I wish I had seen this before I purchased my rv lock over 2 years ago. The one suggestion I have for all inside door handles is to make the handle a different color than black. Many guests have been unable to find the handle to open the door when inside the rv. I put some white tape on the handle to resolve this issue.

We did go with the RVLock based on the diversity of products offered. The keyless baggage latches, Bluetooth module, and the matched rv key latch filled all the demands of what I was trying to achieve with an upgraded locking system.

Thanks for the update. We had a different brand keyless lock which ended up failing rather quickly. After watching your original video I replaced it with the Carmtek a year ago. Like you, we've been very happy with it. The ONLY PROBLEM we've had is our dogs sometimes paw at the door when they want to go out and have switched off the FOB (or muted the button beep). That forces us to be sure we remember our door code in case our FOB doesn't work.
I promise, I’m not laughing at you, but I kind of am. You have to admit that’s a little funny that your dogs hit those switches. Seriously, I’m glad it’s working out for you and thanks for the comment.

I've never heard of Carmtek lock until seeing this video, nor did I know any company makes keyless locks for compartment doors.
I went with a keyless lock from Global Link back in 2020. They are the primary entry door lock supplier for most RV manufacturers. The nice thing about their locks is you can get compartment door locks that are keyed to match the entry doors. My keyless entry door lock has been flawless for the 4 years I've had it.

We bought our 2021 jayco eagle REOK which had it on already. No issues just need to replace battery like any thing with batteries.
We just manually unlock it .

We have a Thor Windsport 34J and will be looking at replacing the OEM keyed entry with the new 10 digit RV keyless entry system for Class A's. I only hope that the required dimensions will fit to our current rig set up.

For my Grand Design, I bought the Lippert keyless lock because it ties in to the GD Connect app and I can see the lock status and lock/unlock it from my cell phone app. It's metal with backlit buttons and I was able to program my own code. There are several good locks on the market now, but integrating with the Connect app was important to me.

Can you do a video showing how to replace the window in a RV door? I have a towable with a frosted window in the door. The only other window on the patio side is above the bed. I'd rather have a window with clear glass and internal shade.

I have this lock. Love everything about it except the install. That flat wire loom, is stiff and hard to manipulate all while lining up both locks and making sure the wires don’t get pinched. Super difficult to do by myself. Then you get it all together only to discover the deadbolt hits and it has to come out, adjustments made, etc etc etc. They really need to change the install process. Also the strike plate that comes with it is basically a piece of soda can. It’s so lightweight. Overall great item. 2 fobs and 4 keys plus additional keypad and lifetime warranty was a shock to me.
Unfortunately the install can be a little cumbersome. I won’t disagree, but they all assemble that way. Until they design a male and female plug system that locks together when screwing the pieces together we might be stuck with the current set up for a while.
@@RVTIPSANDTRAVELS since I was working alone the fix I came up with was I used a short board wrapped in a towel, then used two quick clamps with rubber jaws to clamp the exterior portion tight to the door so I could manipulate the inside half. Also to remedy the cheap strike plate I was able to get a very long brass strike plate at the hardware store that is 9” long, it was predrilled for 6 recessed/flush screws. Took a bit of measuring but that door/lock is rock solid now. Great content. Keep it up.
I would have given this lock a try but by the time i saw your original video i already had purchased the rvlock and it's still going strong but definitely looks like a good product.

Well, Tara takes care of everything around the house, so I can’t say I am a one man band, but as far as the videos it’s just me.
I have RVLock and it has operated and worn perfectly. And the door close handle is metal and has not had a single issue. Curious why an extra digit matters so much ?
2 digits actually, the 0 and 9, which gives you many more code options, and really convenient if you want to use a familiar code with those numbers. I’m glad to hear yours has worked well, that has not been the case for a lot of people. Also, up until a few years ago before they had any real competition, they were gouging people for these locks, over $225-$250 for a basic 8 digit lock. It’s hard for me to get behind those types of companies.
@RVTIPSANDTRAVELS cannot comment on their production costs as I have no clue to their labour, production facility, or tax liabilities. But I would say I believe I paid a fair price and did so willingly. Would also add that most people are quietly happy and usually only go hate speech when upset, making a small group seem larger than it is - meaning, not sure rvlock deserves all of the hate it gets online. I also have gotten a great life from the batteries with my fobs and only replace batteries annually.
I completely agree with you on all points... Reviews are left more often when people have bad experiences, vs good. When I finally decided to start looking at door locks for my trailer I found the Carmtek lock and with a little research I found it had more digits, more features, it was better built, no cracking keypads common with RVLock (which they did remedy by the way), the ability to lock both the deadbolt and the handle, the ability to change the volume on the keypad with 1 easy switch instead of having to remember how to do it on the keypad, the ability to turn off the receiver with a simple switch to extend battery life, and it was less money with a lifetime warranty. RV Lock has made some changes to their products over the last few years based on customer reviews, which is something all companies need to do to stay in business. Understand, its not my job on the channel to convince you one way or the other... my job is to give people options. Despite you being happy with your lock, there's no denying RV Lock had a real problem with their keypads, but as I said I'm glad you had a good experience. I have no loyalty to a specific brand... the only loyalty I have on this channel is to my viewers, and I make recommendations based on what I think are good options for those viewers. I almost exclusively use the fob, so maybe I would have more problems if key pad was used more. With my rv being a 2016 I am always looking to improve, modernize, add convenience, etc. as I live in mine M-F for work travel - and content providers with GOOD info like yours is very much appreciated. My door opening is 2 3/4 by 3 5/8 by 1 1/2, is it that tight where it wont fit because its not 3 3/4?
if the measurements are that close, I would look at the type of handle you have and compare it to the pictures of handles that would work.
we just bought an RV from a private party, they have two of these locks installed... i could not find a key to replace the key.. the previous owners gave me one key... and 2 fobs... i contacted carmtek to give me an idea where to get another key..and they said probably just a locksmith. ..so they DID agree to send us two new cylinders if we didn't want to try to get a locksmith to remake our keys. Which is great. .and they didn't charge shipping. I appreciate that, but I do wish we could have an easier way to get more keys!
i can understand that companies who mass produce these products dont always have a solution for things like what youre requesting. most of the time they are not made on site, or subcontracted, so individual parts may be difficult for them to manage while keeping the bills paid. However, I think its awesome that they are working with you and willing to send you parts at no cost. Nobody does that! I work personally with the owner of Carmtek and he's a great guy. you can probably take the key to a locksmith or a hardware store and have it duplicated for less than $5.

Here’s another model specific question. I’ve just installed the Carmteck lock latest model, it looks like the magnetic catch of the door installed on the outside wall of the camper, is no longer catching the door. Looks like I’ll need some spacers…did you have the same issue on yours? Thank you!

I bought a new trailer a few weeks ago. I'd like to possibly get this lock, but I keep finding stuff I need or want. All these gadgets add up. WDH - $400, fridge fan, command hooks, hitch lock, etc, etc, etc. Another $200 here, might have to wait till next summer?
they do add up, thats why you have to enjoy it. I cant tell you how many things I bought over the years. mostly stuff I still use, some stuff I learned I didnt need, but such a fun experience.
Well, I bought one based on the your reviews and video (which are the best produced videos I have seen on RV topics by the way). And all the great reviews in the video comments. But it seems only the bottom lock deadbolt is electric and the top lock is manual with key or from inside the rv. Is that correct? Or is my lock defective?
the electric lock only controls the deadbolt. the handle lock is only controlled by the key and the lever inside the RV. None of the electric locks on the market control the handle lock.

I have an 8 digit lock and after 3years the keypad cracked. I paid $100 on EBay. I also found a company that has replacement keypad for $15 my lock still works fine

Did you really complain about having to carry the remote? Nothing better then pulling up hit the remote grab all your bags and just open the door not fiddle around pushing numbers to unlock it.
Im not really ever approaching the door with my hands full so using the code is just as easy for me. I lose keys a lot too, so I don’t carry a remote because I’m sure I’ll lose that. I rarely use the remote because we hike and bike a lot, so bringing less is much easier for us. I’d also venture to guess that many folks are using the keypad a lot since so many overlays are cracking. I do appreciate your input and for watching our video.

David, they come with 2 so you can remove the old overlay and install the new one. If you can’t find the other one, email them, they’ll send you a new one for free. I talk about this in the video… LIFETIME WARRANTY! Why not take advantage of it?
Aww bummer, I just noticed this company is embossing their website on the lock like the other. That is so stupid and tacky. As if anybody wouldn’t just google the brand and find it without this. Stuff like that looks aftermarket and I hate things that look aftermarket. It’s not a dealbreaker, but it doesn’t look clean and should be eliminated. I still also want to see a keyless option, touch the door handle and it unlocks when a fob is detected nearby, just like a car. Of course my other gripe is, why should we have to retrofit all of this? RV manufacturers should just include it.
i personally like the "clean" look too, but nothing we can do. In fact, I like it so much I usually remove all the emblems from my vehicles.
For real though. Let’s start an RV company that actually makes trailers with all the little things squared away, that even the “great” manufacturers like Grand Design miss on
Seems totally pointless except for the very rare instances you've mentioned (Having more family members than keys). I've heard a lot of BS hype about "Oh the manufacturers only produce like 5 keys so dealers have an easier time". That's only for the handle. The deadbolts are much more difficult to get into. $200 wasted in my opinion.
